Do these sofas look old fashioned?

I’m looking for new sofas, I really don’t want ones with loose cushioned backs or seats as they never look tidy and the teens end up taking the cushions off.

These look so comfortable and supportive but I’m not sure whether they look like something elderly people would choose.

My home is light and modern.

What do you think? Any ideas of where I should look for nice quality sofas with lowish arms and fixed back like this?

Anywhere to avoid?

Thanks!

We went to Next to look at sofas on the day before lockdown. They looked so lovely but we were really disappointed when we sat on them as they just weren't as comfy as they looked!
Definitely wouldn't recommend Sofology as we ordered sofas from them last August, waited our 13 weeks for delivery only for them to call us on the day of delivery to tell us that they would only deliver one sofa as the other was too damaged and we would have to wait another 17 weeks for it to be remade and delivered!! Absolute shower of shits!!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/03/2021 01:40

Yes. They're still nice though.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 04/03/2021 03:52

Probably comfy as, but look very dated .

Haven't read the whole thread, but op- I posted my second hand chair on here, to try and locate the sofa version (and by total fluke managed to get the large matching sofa for free, if I remember right)
I had alot of negative comments about the chair, but when I sourced the matching sofa, well its just absolutely perfect.
Our house is full of antiques and things not found in the likes of next/IKEA etc.
It all depends on your taste! Your choice of sofa isn't for me, but as long as it's comfortable and fits with your style, go for it!

UltimateBlends · 04/03/2021 05:27

Just caught up with the thread and have seen you have brought a sofa op, I was amazed that nobody asked what the room you were planning to put sofa in looked like.
As I say, I posted here about my second hand sofa and had lots of negative comments about how "dated" it was, but with our style of decor, it was just perfect (although we rent, and when our rental person came for the yearly check up, she commented it was like a set for American horror story, I dont know if that is a compliment or not! But I think MN would like say not)

I think any furnishings can look good in the right setting!
Hope your new sofa is everything you want it to be!

Ooh OP I feel your pain sofa shopping. I also think I have looked at every bloody sofa going too.

I have the same requirements as you, has to have a comfy arm so that I can be a lout and spread out on it while binge watching something. And it must not have those annoying loose cushions at the back that need puffing up all the time. And not one of those ones that you can take the covers off, as i think they just look shit as you can never get that cover back on again perfectly. (even noticed that in the shop). I am not in the UK btw so have seen them in shops.

And why are they so huge these days? Everything is all about corner suits and day beds, and I have a small room so this isn't going to work.

Anyway, seeing as I am 50 now and have always previously bought practical suites, those are kid friendly (have a fidgety ds that picks at things constantly, also moving on the the arm of the chair). So now I have decided that it may look godawful ugly to some, but I don't really care too much. I have decided to go for a recliner. Grin I just need to decide now on leather (meh I haven't loved what I have seen, I don't like buffalo leather and also don't like shiny leather) or fabric. And then if I go with fabric, which one.

Who knew choosing a lounge suite could be so complicated!

I do like the one you went with, I hope you will have happy relaxing moochy sessions on it.... Smile

God, they are awful, sorry OP, don't do it!

Toilenstripes · 04/03/2021 06:41

We have this from Sofa.com. It’s the most comfortable sofa I’ve ever had.

Literallynoidea · 04/03/2021 07:02

Very old fashioned. Like an old person would have.

Literallynoidea · 04/03/2021 07:05

Go to sofa.com

I would avoid Load as they look nice but aren't very comfortable

Literallynoidea · 04/03/2021 07:05

*Loaf!

dotdashdashdash · 04/03/2021 08:03

They are the Hotter shoe of the sofa world. Not stylish but probably good for you.

Grin this sums it up I think!

goingtotown · 04/03/2021 08:54

There’s similar in our furniture charity shop.

What is the point of posting that? 🙄
Tantalust · 05/03/2021 08:32

What about these? I’ve just recently bought a chair and large sofa and in this range.

I’ve only read good things about SofaSofa and they will deliver in 6-8 weeks.

I’m hoping they will be comfortable!

I have scatter back and it is such a faff. I have to plump up every cushion, and place them properly every day. one sitting and they look a mess.
the kids throw them on the floor all the time to make forts and I have to fluff them up again and again.

next sofa I get will be this style. (not colour are you mad?!)
it looks so comfy. I would definitely choose one like this.

I agree with PP if you add a couple of cushions and a throw it will look more modern but you still get a good settee.
I'd never go for style (we went for cheapest but largest. I knew the cushions would be a pain) over practicality for long term items. styles change in only a few years and things go out if fashion and back into fashion all the time.

I can't believe people follow the fashion in home decor. I was naive enough to think people just decorated and furnished to their own taste in their own Home!

Not fond of the arm rest padded things. In addition, they are grey.

So?
Dowser · 07/03/2021 13:22

Dreadful
Sorry op

Dowser · 07/03/2021 13:27

Other ones you’ve chosen look nicer
Btw..it says they are in boucle
That’s a loopy fabric isn’t it
Might get a bit of snagging off buckles etc
I would check

CounsellorTroi · 07/03/2021 13:38

They’re not unlike mine except the larger one has two cushions not three. I bought mine 18 months ago.

johncoper · 17/10/2024 12:42

They definitely look like something from an old people’s home. You could make them look nicer with a throw and some nice cushions, adding a pop of color or texture to freshen up the look, but I guess that defies the point of keeping things simple or low-maintenance. Also, if you’re worried about messiness, especially with teens in the house, a cream sofa might not be the best idea — even with those stylish cushions, it might still be a challenge to keep everything looking clean and tidy!

This was 3.5 years ago so OP has probably made their mind up by now.

Phonedrone · 17/10/2024 18:25

I’m still here! Bought the Olivia sofas from sofasofa and fucking hate them.

will probably end up buying a recliner set next that don’t have the fucking loose backs that fall forward all the time
