Do these sofas look old fashioned?

I’m looking for new sofas, I really don’t want ones with loose cushioned backs or seats as they never look tidy and the teens end up taking the cushions off.

These look so comfortable and supportive but I’m not sure whether they look like something elderly people would choose.

My home is light and modern.

What do you think? Any ideas of where I should look for nice quality sofas with lowish arms and fixed back like this?

Anywhere to avoid?

Thanks!

Just bought a sofa from Next. Loose cushions, yes, but very sturdy and good quality.

My mum has sofas like the ones in your photo. She's nearly 70. She's had them donkeys years. Taste is subjective. I'm sure she'd hate my new purchase.

Milomonster · 27/02/2021 10:16

Sorry but v ugly.

diddl · 27/02/2021 10:34

Do they do other colours or materials?

Tbb op I didn't even know you could still buy sofas like that!
On the other hand, they may come back in fashion in 10years time Wink

ThePricklySheep · 27/02/2021 10:42

Does this count as a loose cushion?
They don’t move around. Cheap and seem good quality.

I've looked on the website Op & quite like it in other colours!

It's growing on meBlush

Nitpickpicnic · 27/02/2021 10:55

Well, if you buy it beware that you are already halfway to another purchase.

You will start worrying about stains and wear, then soon after order those catalogue springy/stretchy polyester covers for bits or all of the seats. Possibly in mauve, Sky blue or ‘Cotswold Floral’ design.

Slippery slope. Ending in a footstool upholstered in dachshund tapestry.
You have been warned.

I’ve chosen! I’m going with the NEXT Blakely range in natural Boucle.

Let’s hope they last and are are comfy as they look. Thanks for your input, hopefully these will be practical and stylish.

I did think the others were so comfortable looking but I had a feeling they looked dated.

Yes, I like those - I'd say the look was timeless and won't date. The colour shouldn't get grubby and they are neutral so it won't matter if you change your decor. Good choice.

Not wanting to rain on your parade Op but are you really going to spend £1k+ on sofas you haven't even sat on?
BerylCook · 27/02/2021 11:24

OP I think quite a few people have a different style to you and are suggesting made.com sofa.com and loaf.
Loaf sofas are particularly awful! My B& SIL have one and it looks a mess. It is very uncomfortable unless you are lying down on it. It’s a trendy brand though so my SIL really loves it 🙄

inmyslippers · 27/02/2021 11:24

They look really comfy, I'd be scared about staining though. Have a cat and preschooler

BerylCook · 27/02/2021 11:28

Nice OP!!
Looks like the ‘Stamford’ with different cushions. Very comfy if it is!

allmycats · 27/02/2021 12:26

If you like them, buy them. I never give a shit about 'fashion'. My money, my choice.

NoWayHosier · 27/02/2021 13:16

That’s much nicer IMO, OP, I like the button back cushions. We need new sofas and keep flip flopping between trying to find new, and getting our existing ones reupholstered.

I have always done this! Never once been to a sofa shop to test the wares. Currently have DFS sofas which I love. I ordered them online, paid extra for the foam filled seat cushions and was happy not to have had to deal with a 'sales' person!

Janegrey333 · 27/02/2021 13:52

@whatsnewpussycat777

I like them
I don’t like the slanted arm on sofas. I don’t mind them.
Janegrey333 · 27/02/2021 13:52

...like the sofas in the pic.

Okbussitout · 27/02/2021 14:16

I have a firm sofa just from ikea (as we live in a small terrace so need flat pack!) obviously I'm not a teen but do a fair amount of lounging it's 10 years old and still in good shape. The cushions don't look crappy and mishapen when you get up.

I think that style is really unappealing and does look like something quite dated. I think there are other options for a sofa for you.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/02/2021 14:17

@BerylCook

I've got a Stamford sofa which I bought from our local BHF shop. It is really comfortable. It has higher arms though
dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 27/02/2021 14:53

They would look more modern in leather effect. Not high enough back for me though....most ultra-modern stuff is too low-back to be comfortable.
Get what you like it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It is your house.

BerylCook · 27/02/2021 14:55

I have also done this. I get fabric swatches and check measurements, filling type for back and cushions etc. Never been disappointed.
Many shops don’t display the whole range.
They might have an armchair from the range or a sofa (in the wrong size) which will give you an idea but they rarely have the everything you want in all size/fabric options.

zukiecat · 27/02/2021 15:22

I think they look fine, I need a new sofa, and if I could afford it I'd go for something like this, looks so comfortable.

What's the problem with BHF furniture?

My house is mostly furnished with furniture from there. All miss matched, but that isn't important. When we're able to go out again my new sofa will be from a charity like BHF, We can't all afford new things.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/02/2021 18:03

Slippery slope. Ending in a footstool upholstered in dachshund tapestry.

I really want a dachshund footstool!

JaninaDuszejko · 03/03/2021 21:22

What's the problem with BHF furniture?

Can't speak for Bluntness but you know there's lots that is very good about BHF furniture. It's good for the environment, it's cheap, it gives money to charity. We should really all think about buying second hand and vintage before buying new.

I've never bought from BHF but I have various pieces of hand-me-down furniture (including my GM's Victorian chaise longue which appears to be back in high fashion, I think I'll need to get it reupholstered to celebrate!), second hand buys from the local auction house and ebay as well as more expensive vintage pieces. A house isn't a home unless some of the furniture has some history.
