Do these sofas look old fashioned?

I’m looking for new sofas, I really don’t want ones with loose cushioned backs or seats as they never look tidy and the teens end up taking the cushions off.

These look so comfortable and supportive but I’m not sure whether they look like something elderly people would choose.

My home is light and modern.

What do you think? Any ideas of where I should look for nice quality sofas with lowish arms and fixed back like this?

Anywhere to avoid?

Thanks!

@averylongtimeago

Ask yourself what is most important to you: other people thinking your sofa looks a bit old fashioned Or having a really comfortable sofa that you like.

If you would rather have a bad back than a comfy sofa, go with the first option.

This. I don't care what anyone thinks about my sofas. My back loves them. Too many sofas are instruments of pain. Sod fashion for the sake of it. Fashion is naff in 5 years anyway. There are too many bad sofas in the world.

We were looking at sofas last year when the showrooms were open and I swear all the comfiest ones were vile to look at Hmm

MouthAche · 27/02/2021 00:16

I like them alot... I prefer these type

Hate leather ones which people tend to prefer, sticky in the summer, cold in the winter.

Yep agree with everyone else. They are old fashioned and ugly.

PADH · 27/02/2021 00:26

They look very... practical?

7Days · 27/02/2021 00:33

It's a bit of a risk, buying a sofa off the internet.

Could you manage another few months til lockdowns ease and you can test them in person?

Those ones are not stylish but youd forget that once you're comfy. Likewise with stylish ones, you might prefer the look of them rather than sitting on them.

But I wouldn't spend hundreds on something that may turn out to be neither

Happymum12345 · 27/02/2021 00:34

Yes. They look old fashioned.

YouokHun · 27/02/2021 00:53

Naff, naff, naff

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 27/02/2021 01:47

Sorry they look like they should be on the “free to collect” section on Gumtree. Literally. You can get these for free no problem, idea of paying for them is bizarre

VeganCow · 27/02/2021 02:18

Years ago I went armchair shopping for my mum. We went into one shop with loads and tried them all. There was only one comfy one and you sank into it and it was this exact style. Mum bought the armchair and I always sit in it when I visit. Why do people say it's old fashioned and not on trend, who dictates what is? Or is everyone like sheep and only want what everyone else is buying?

GreenSlide · 27/02/2021 03:05

I love them. They're not going to set the world on fire with their trendiness but they look tidy and comfy. Grey low backed corner sofas are bound to be on their way out soon anyway.

AbsentmindedWoman · 27/02/2021 04:52

I can picture myself snoozing very comfortably on them so it's a yes from me Grin

Uncomfortable sofas are a fucking misery and I couldn't give a shit what it looks like if you can't enjoy lounging cosily on it.

maryberryslayers · 27/02/2021 05:03

They are a bit dated.

Look at M&S. we have the Nantucket range and the cushions are really big and heavy so don't move or get that scruffy look about them. We've had ours 5 years in 2 homes and they still look brand new and are extremely comfortable.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 27/02/2021 05:14

Hideous.

LoveFall · 27/02/2021 05:26

They are not hideous, but to me a few years out of date. But comfort should never go out of style.

My biggest recommendation is don't buy a sofa with fixed pillows. When I really want to escape snoring or just can't sleep, I regret our sofa cushions are immovable. I want to sleep but the width is too small, even for lying on your side with knees up,

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/02/2021 06:16

They are the Hotter shoe of the sofa world. Deffo!

I don’t like the sofology one either.

I’m surprised you want chenille with dogs unless they don’t shed. Personally I’d not be put off from ones with legs and make it the teen’s jobs to fish them out every day. My dd fishes the dog’s toys out from under our sofas.

Next do some quite firm sofas so whilst you wouldn’t sink, the sofas also wouldn’t look untidy.

ShaneTheThird · 27/02/2021 06:20

I want to nap on that sofa so bad.

PollyGray · 27/02/2021 06:32

I think you buy what you like, you have to sit on them. I own a Loaf squishy velvet chair for reading and dozing and a vintage G Plan 2 seater sofa for when I want to watch T.V. I bought them both for me.

Jeremyironseverything · 27/02/2021 06:39

I think they look old fashioned.

In a lot of places you get a choice of hard or soft cushions. I've chosen hard before from scs, and they've lasted years.

20viona · 27/02/2021 06:40

They are ugly but look comfy

Ulysses · 27/02/2021 06:40

My friend's just bought sofas just like these. I was surprised that she bought something that looks quite dated but they are comfortable.

Hers recline too so I think that tipped the balance between style and comfort.

JaninaDuszejko · 27/02/2021 06:45

That sofa style was never fashionable. My PIL's sofa is all Bauhaus style tubular steel (they're architects), my DM has a chesterfield and my grandparent's sofa was mid century modern. All of which are perfectly comfortable whereas the OP's choice looks like the kind of sofa that will be impossible to get out of if you drink too much sherry.

Justa47 · 27/02/2021 06:51

@Phonedrone

Yes they look old fashioned and probably really comfortable.

peak2021 · 27/02/2021 06:55

You don't have to be a follower of fashion. Are they comfortable, will they last?

BerylCook · 27/02/2021 06:58

The split back cushions make it look very old fashioned. It’s a £600/700 sofa and it’s not great.
Have you looked at sofa sofa? They have some good designs within this price range.
