Do these sofas look old fashioned?

I’m looking for new sofas, I really don’t want ones with loose cushioned backs or seats as they never look tidy and the teens end up taking the cushions off.

These look so comfortable and supportive but I’m not sure whether they look like something elderly people would choose.

My home is light and modern.

What do you think? Any ideas of where I should look for nice quality sofas with lowish arms and fixed back like this?

Anywhere to avoid?

Thanks!

Loaf does some gorgeous sofas. I got mine from there and the cushions don’t come off. They also clean it if it gets stained which is so handy.

Aquamarine1029 · 26/02/2021 23:02

They are hideous.

MrsSugar · 26/02/2021 23:02

Yeah they look old fashioned. My husbands nana has ones just like these !

They are the ones that my 90 year old mother has.

God who cares, they look mega comfy

They look old fashioned to me. And like the sofa you get in a furnished flat.

I have a loose cushioned sofa from Made that is 7 years old and looks fine.

Wondermule · 26/02/2021 23:06

I think this shape is a bit more modern & doesn’t involve loads of cushions

(Sorry I love browsing sofas)

Cocogreen · 26/02/2021 23:06

Yes looks a bit 1990s but if you love it, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Looks very comfortable.

Mammaaof · 26/02/2021 23:07

My grandparents had these 10 years ago now and they were out of fashion then

You can get many comfy sofas that look a bit less like you bought them from the British heart foundation.,,

But I’m lost as to what cottage style is,,do you mean elderly style?😃

Sunnydays999 · 26/02/2021 23:08

They look very 1990s . But that shouldn’t bother you . Fashion always goes round .

Sunnydays999 · 26/02/2021 23:09

@Wondermule I prefer the 1990 sofa . That one doesn’t look like you could lay out easily after Sunday lunch Grin

jackstini · 26/02/2021 23:13

Very old fashioned sorry, although they do look comfy!
Are you going for cream/beige? What size/configuration?
Budget?

Wondermule · 26/02/2021 23:14

That’s true Sunny, I have visions of perching awkwardly on it and shuffling about trying to find a comfy spot Confused

But OP’s sofas are very orthopaedic looking

janlevinson · 26/02/2021 23:16

Horrific. Sorry.

HeronLanyon · 26/02/2021 23:17

They do look old fashioned and I’m thinking you have that inkling yourself - the arms and arm detail most of all then the false cushion ‘divides’ then overall very bulky and fussy. They do look as though a care home might have them.
I can imagine them ‘working’ in some settings I guess (with cushions and throws to kind of cover them up).
Op are your eyes kind of worn out from looking at thousands of sofas ? I feel for you. I had to buy a printer online the other day and what with about 2,000 to choose from and then the bloody ink plans etc I came out of that experience feeling shattered !
Good luck and if you think these will work in your place then get them. If not, not.

ThinkingIsAllowed · 26/02/2021 23:19

they look awful, sorry!

ikeepseeingit · 26/02/2021 23:20

They're dated, but the colour is light enough for you to overlook them if you're going for function over form. Definitely not so offensive it would put you off an entire room! Buy them if you don't mind it looking old fashioned. :)

Downthisroad · 26/02/2021 23:21

hmmm, I would say they look old fashioned yeah. I think it's the stitch across the middle. Anything modern generally is plain and unfussy.

GeidiPrimes · 26/02/2021 23:21

They look comfy, but I don't think attractive to look at.

This one has a fixed back and is in a more classic style, and a much more pleasing shape (to me anyway).

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 26/02/2021 23:24

Awful, but my taste is a bit retro. These look like something that Id see in an older persons home. Build for comfort but not style

AlannaOfTrebond · 26/02/2021 23:25

Sorry, but I really dislike them.

They are the sort of thing my in laws would pick and their style is to reject all aesthetics in favour of function.

They do look incredibly comfortable though.

GeidiPrimes · 26/02/2021 23:28

Could also have a look on Made.com - their Orson range are a good classic/modern shape and have fixed backs. They're very firm, but still comfortable.

WithASpider · 26/02/2021 23:28

They look very much like my sofas. I really dislike the look, but DH is big, we both have back problems and these fit the bill. They're supportive and comfortable. The rest of our house is quite modern though so it doesn't quite look like a nursing home!

CavernousScream · 26/02/2021 23:28

These were widely viewed as naff in the 90s. But if they’re still around to buy then I guess they must be comfortable?
