Hi all

I couldn’t find the new thread so here is one I set up. It’s windy out there! Glad I weeded my flowerbeds a couple of days ago.

I'm on the app so can't hide the Covid boards but my thumb is merrily swiping to hide every thread with a title that makes me rage. It's mostly anything starting "so do you think..." or "should schools...". Bunfights are not good for me and they always end up with shouting, name calling and staunch rigid thinking prevailing.

There was a thread somewhere about independent retailers with an online presence I have saved so will be trawling through there for a start. Brilliant combination of a useful thread, done with genuine good intentions - the best of MN. Must remember to slyly add DH's work website to the list

We heard the rumblings yesterday and hot footed it to IKEA so at least we can spend our AL week getting the house in order, even if we can't reward ourselves with a child-free meal out afterwards 😭. Hope B&Q stay open again..... we're bound to need some more wall plugs as our walls are shite.

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/nov/01/governments-lose-control-virus-revolt-civil-unrest-continent

It's hard not to feel that Europe as a whole is getting towards a, "something's got to give," situation. And once a couple of countries give in and accept that they can't contain the virus, they can only slow the spread (with a lot of collateral damage) I think the rest might follow quite quickly - as they did into lockdown. (A vaccine, even a poorly working but safe one, of course gives such countries an out where they do save face successfully.)

My worry is that by that point there will be neither the money nor perhaps the public goodwill to protect the truly vulnerable - they'll be taking their chances with the rest of us. Whereas if we went, even now, for (voluntary) targeted protection, we could probably keep it going until we had a decent vaccine or herd immunity via infection of the healthy population.

Iheartmysmart · 01/11/2020 09:41

@Littlebelina The cynic in me thinks they roll him out as a threat, as in “If you don’t do as we tell you then this is what will happen”. Pure manipulation on the part of the government.
I ventured off this thread onto other bits of Mumsnet. Shudders... won’t do that again. It March all over again with da roolz.

Taswama · 01/11/2020 10:32

Welcome @northender !

NannyGythaOgg · 01/11/2020 10:45

@Sonicthehedgehogg
If B%Q has to close there is always B&M, Home Bargains and Wilko all of whom sell some food so should stay open.

And as always, there's not much you can't get from Amazon

NannyGythaOgg · 01/11/2020 10:48

@Sonicthehedgehogg
locking the Covid board down makes a difference, but every other thread on Chat and AIBU is also Covid related so it's certainly not the whole answer. I keep reporting them as I don't think it's fair that people who really need, for their mental health, not to see them keep having them thrust in their face.
I do go on the Covid thread occasionally but I hate it being thrust in my face all the time. MNHQ must get pissed off with the amount of reporting I do

starfish88 · 01/11/2020 10:49

Anyone mind linking the independent retailers thread here? I can't be bothered with the rest of the site, or the rest of the internet now, too much temptation to bang my head against a brick wall.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 01/11/2020 10:52

I can't do the link as I'm on the app but it's called "independent online shops" and it's in the Christmas topic.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 01/11/2020 10:55

"Tina's Chestnut stuffing...." (which has now been moved to classics) is also worth a read for tips and a sanity boost. I'm saving the hacked creme brulee for when we can meet in groups again, we don't have the ramekins or insulin available to eat that much between DH and I.

ISaySteadyOn · 01/11/2020 11:04

@northender, welcome! We are glad to have you. Smile

So libraries are nonessential right? ,no one needs to read. Sigh.

Thanks! My mental health won't survive the Corona dome right now. Ive already lost my appetite, just like back in March and April some nice christmassy retail therapy might help!

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/11/2020 12:13

They have already started on telling people about exercise and travelling to walk etc- oh no it is a return to lockdown dementing

and the swimming pool is to close which is about the only thing which has kept me going the past months

HitchikersGuide · 01/11/2020 12:19

Oh dear God are they not all just utterly bored out there? I've just spent the morning reporting posts and asking for the particularly silly and repetitive ones to be moved to the Corona boards. Please tell me that the 'teachers' on there aren't really teachers... If they are, then frankly they're probably right that school is a pointless death zone and the kids would be better off with a worksheet. Though printing off the worksheets will probably cause some index finger problem that will lead to disability and death. We've had a mix of teachers over the years, as in any profession, but I have never come across anyone like those who repetitively post on MN.

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/11/2020 12:21

I think they might be from unions or something those repeat posters.

DominaShantotto · 01/11/2020 12:21

Yep. The kids' swimming lessons were due to restart next week and they were soooo happy about it. Fucked again.

Cubs and Beavers was due to restart in the hall with some form of normality (half the length of time and half the group but still). Fucked again.

I was about to start trying to brave going onto the uni campus to grab a coffee and my car permit and acclimatise myself to how badly they've fucked it up. Fucked again.

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/11/2020 12:23

Madly, although off during half term school now says need to isolate one DC until Thurs so that's that for me then. As another pupil was in the year group (120 approx) before half term and tested over the holidays. Makes so much sense.

Littlebelina · 01/11/2020 12:24

Wewillnotcomply is trending on twitter but most of the tweets seem to people complaining about others tweeting this. Which is going to get it trending more and negate their point? Also lots of blaming of people for not following da roolz and therefore this is ALL THEIR FAULT. This will be a brilliant sociology/psychology dissertation in the future on how you can get people to blame each other.

For those lurking itching to complain at us, as usual I will follow the rules just not the made up bullshit mumsnet/ twitterverse rules.

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/11/2020 12:24

Also some mad stuff on the news about how they might do GCSEs as mocks in the spring like that will give them time to learn - seeing as had so much disruption and time lost already. Hmm

rosettesforjill · 01/11/2020 12:26

I am grateful to you all for helping me to laugh at the dementing on some of the threads about outdoor exercise etc. Why on earth do people just make up random rules?! It STATES IN THE NON MADE UP RULES that travelling to an outdoor public place counts as a reasonable excuse!

Also, glad to see playgrounds will stay open.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 01/11/2020 12:27

The care home where my brother lives have just posted on the families Facebook page that due to the governments announcement they can no longer do window visits.
For fucks sake, people were waving and smiling at their loved ones through a fucking window. How is that any risk, to anyone.

The whole window visit thing was beyond fucking tragic as it was, why take it away?!

ISaySteadyOn · 01/11/2020 12:32

Twits.
The destruction of normal human interaction is immoral and unethical. I am finally and with thanks to you all clear in my conscience.

And relieved about playgrounds! Thank goodness.

chocolatesweets · 01/11/2020 12:33

@LivinLaVidaLoki disgusting cruel way to treat the elderly in the last few months of their lives. X

IwishIwasyoda · 01/11/2020 12:58

Hello everyone. Just checking in for sanity's sake. I have had enough of lockdown, lockdown harder, narrative elsewhere. I am so, so fed up with the scientists and politicians only giving part of the story re statistics. So I have decided to focus on what I can do to improve my health - online fitness subscription here I come

TabbyStar · 01/11/2020 13:07

This is from Tim Spector of the Zoe app saying that cases are not surging and deaths are normal for this time of year covid.joinzoe.com/post/covid-rates-are-not-surging - he suggests on Twitter that the second wave is "running out of steam" already.
