OhToBeASeahorse · 14/10/2020 10:46

4 days post partum. Baby fell asleep on my bed so not in a safe position so I cant leave her to go and get breakfast. Thankfully someone bought me a.box of Milk Tray that I thought I could have.

Fuck me. They are rank. I've had to eat loads cos I'm.starving and my milk has just come in but talk about wasted calories.

Ah right, haven't looked at their products for a long time!

OhToBeASeahorse · 14/10/2020 13:56

DH went shopping and came back with Godiva. Still palm oil in them tho, FFS, but I appreciated the sentiment.

After a total of 2 hours sleep I'll try anything...

Cadburys now tastes like Hersheys

American here. Nothing tastes like Hershey's. Not even Cadbury's has stooped that low. Hershey's kisses taste of vomit. No, they really do.

Absolutely agree. I was given some and I thought that tastes of PUKE. Compared to that Cadbury’s is luxury chocolate!

DioneTheDiabolist · 14/10/2020 14:08

Milk Tray is fucking cack now.Angry I won't buy it or Roses anymore and Roses were my favourite Christmas treat.Sad

Lidl's single origin bars are lovely. I would love to find a decent variety box but I can't.

GreenLeafTurnip · 14/10/2020 14:09

I moved out of the UK 4 years ago and haven't had Cadbury's for ages. Some of my family sent me some and I was so looking forward to it. IT IS SHIT. WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO IT?? I was so, so sad and disappointed. At least I can live knowing that I'm not missing anything anymore!

LadySeaThing · 14/10/2020 14:14

So that's how they get it to taste like vomit

I remember when I first tried Hersheys, I thought it must have gone off or have something wrong with it. I reassured it was fine and that's what it was meant to taste like! 🤮

I mean why bother? It's like eating vomit-flavoured candles, all mushy, grainy and greasy.
I've remembered the other chocolate I love is Menier dark cooking chocolate. No palm oil and it's really, really nice. I also use it to make choc chip cookies.

howabouthisthen · 14/10/2020 14:15

@OhToBeASeahorse - god I remember exactly that dilemma, and not just for safety concerns but also because of the fear of BABY WAKING UP!!! or just because i was too flipping tired to move and full of oxytocin and kind of nodding off and frankly just needed someone to magically feed me too.

Well done and congratulations for your baby and good luck with bfeeding. I found it quite a rocky road to get feeding established, and definitely needed a LOT of chocolate, biscuits, fresh custard (recommend it!) and various other high-calorie items.

Good to rule Milk Tray out early on then! hope you get a good stash of something you like better and eat all you need whenever to keep the wheels on the bus.

ForensicAccountant. I read that Hershey’s puts its milk through a process called controlled lipolysis which breaks down the fatty acids in the milk and produces butyric acid which is the chemical that gives vomit its smell and taste. That explains a lot 🤢

Aldi Choceur pretzel bar is like crack cocaine. So so good. Milk chocolate filled with salty pretzel peices.

I know someone who got a mini fridge as a bedside table when her kids were teens. Single mum to 5 boys, they ate like locusts so any nice food and drink she hid in her mini fridge just for her. Never heard of a more genius plan!

Djchickpea · 14/10/2020 14:29

Thanks for the recommendations all. It's a shame it seems like there's no 'big tin' equivalent for the posh chocs, however I have now added some Tony's chocoloneley to my shopping basket, and ordered a hotel chocolat box as a thank you present! Mmm chocolate

keeprocking · 14/10/2020 14:35

Green & Black's was bought by Cadbury in 2005, and later became part of Mondelēz International (formerly known as Kraft Foods). It has principal manufacturing sites in Canada, Poland, and Italy.

Could explain a deterioration in the quality of G and B in recent years.

iloveeverykindofcat · 14/10/2020 14:44

Thornton's have also gone downhill. Maybe its just because I haven't had chocolate in a while and my expectations of it were too high, but I tried some the other day and it was definitely more bland sweetness/less cocoa tasting than I remember.

Thornton’s have been shite for a while.
eleventylevennamechanges · 14/10/2020 14:48

I was working in the USA back in the early 80s. My dad sent me a large shipment of cadburys chocolate to cheer me up. (It was still nice back then). I took some to work and shared it round. I was the most popular girl in the place. Grin

Dailyhandtowelwash · 14/10/2020 14:48

Thornton’s were shit before Cadbury. They are awful now. They always taste stale. My in-laws sent us a box over lockdown, via Amazon. They arrived in a loose box with no interior packaging and the box lid had come off - they were all over the place and inedible from being squashed/exposed. So sad to have to ask for a refund and buy something else.

SecretNutellaFix · 14/10/2020 14:49

I've recently had some of the Australian Cadbury's imported chocolate from B & M Bargains.

The freddo milky top bars are tiny, but are oh, so good. No palm oil.
The caramilk is frankly amazing and I actually squealed when I had a piece, it tasted like I remember caramac bars tasting. Ingredients are : full cream milk, sugar, cocoa butter, milk solids, Emulsifiers (soy lecithin, 476), flavour.

They aren't cheap at £2.99 a bar/ bag of freddos, but better than most on the market.

VinylDetective · 14/10/2020 14:49

We live a mile or so from the Hotel Chocolat factory which has a shop with huge discounts on products nearing their sell by date. It’s hell!

WrongKindOfFace · 14/10/2020 15:04

They are grim now, and all taste the same.

cologne4711 · 14/10/2020 15:04

@Haggled

You all need to try Ritter Sport. It's not very giftable as it's only sold in bars, but it is divine. It's German so no American oily gunk in there! You can get lots of flavour choices in Lidl, possibly Aldi too. I've seen it in Asda on occasion. The best ones are cornflake, butter biscuit, and praline.
Completely agree - I get cornflakes and butter biscuit in Lidl. You can get a few more interesting flavours in Waitrose too, and my local one recently started stocking the Alpine Milk.

I actually had a box of Milk Tray this year, and it wasn't that bad. However, I was drinking wine so maybe it masked the taste!

1forAll74 · 14/10/2020 15:05

Cadbury Milk Tray are dire now.. I used to like Black Magic chocs, so hope they are not ruined also, as not had any for ages. I had a small cancer op many years ago, and five visiting people each bought me in a box of Black Magic chocs, so quite a few nurses enjoyed some treats.

CaveMum · 14/10/2020 15:05

Oooh @VinylDetective you might be nearish to me - there’s a Hotel Chocolat outlet about 20 miles away from me, in Huntingdon. I keep planning to visit it but haven’t made it yet!

I’m currently trying to convince DH to buy me the Velvetiser for a Christmas - there’s a £20 off when you spend £100 in the latest HC brochure!

rougebuterfly · 14/10/2020 15:06

@Wallabyone

I got given a box of these recently and was sorely disappointed to learn that a) they've got rid of the Turkish Delight, and b) they are all very mediocre.
Same here!

Very disappointed that they have got rid of the Turkish delight!

VinylDetective · 14/10/2020 15:09

That’s the one @CaveMum. My pre Christmas is coming up soon as it’s rammed in December.

VinylDetective · 14/10/2020 15:10

Got so excited there I missed “visit” out!

cologne4711 · 14/10/2020 15:11

Also agree about Montezuma - their chocolate shops are a wonderful thing.
