OhToBeASeahorse · 14/10/2020 10:46

4 days post partum. Baby fell asleep on my bed so not in a safe position so I cant leave her to go and get breakfast. Thankfully someone bought me a.box of Milk Tray that I thought I could have.

Fuck me. They are rank. I've had to eat loads cos I'm.starving and my milk has just come in but talk about wasted calories.

I second the Waitrose 49% milk choc - AMAZING. Also their own brand boxes of chocs, they have several really nice ones. Or if you don't have a waitrose, M&S own brand can be good and the dark Tony's chocolonely (though I hate the name! Why is it ..lonely, which is sad, instead of ..loney, which would rhyme? Anyway.)

However when I was bf I found the best high-calorie food to inhale was danish pastries.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 14/10/2020 12:40

Lindt Lindor does use palm oil, for anyone trying to avoid it for the sake of it. They do taste better than most though!

faithfulbird · 14/10/2020 12:41

I hate them too. Not sure why people love gifting them!

BeansBehindMyKnees · 14/10/2020 12:41

Palm oil is a bloody curse. Is there any foodstuff it's not wormed its way into?

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 14/10/2020 12:42

I have an old tin that I'm filling with bits and pieces!
I add in Celebrations bought in a smaller cardboard pack for the kids.

Marmalade414 · 14/10/2020 12:46

Why can't you put the baby in a Moses basket or pram lol? Just lift them and put them where you want them lol.

My mum used to do this for Christmas- from Wollies Pic and Mix when it had all the different wrapped chocolates- 'twas amazing!
Dailyhandtowelwash · 14/10/2020 12:46

There's no palm oil in actual Lindt - just the truffle filling.

It's a nightmare isn't it? I find almost everything in M&S (including all their chocolate ranges) has palm oil, and Waitrose aren't much better. They used to be places I thought you'd pay more but get good products for it.

crochetmonkey74 · 14/10/2020 12:47

also- PP this is not about the baby if/ when/ where - this is about the chocolate !!

Crystal87 · 14/10/2020 12:48

Yes they're horrible. All the fillings are the similar and the chocolate is crap quality. Dairy Box chocolates are shite now too.

Howlooseisyourgoose · 14/10/2020 12:50

So all you chocolate fans out there - what's a decent brand that does big tin versions suitable for Xmas pigging?

Quality Street do truffles now (praline, salted caramel, orange), not in tins, but boxes. On offer in Asda right now (down from £5 to £3).

Not sure of quality, haven't tried them.

eggandonion · 14/10/2020 12:50

I love the beer fridge/teasmaid combo, like a personal mini bar. An ideal gift for new mothers.
And it is terrible what has happened to chocolates, disappointment in every fancy box.
I had a velcro baby, my first child - the second and third were ok if I put them down. Good luck with baby, op.

Cam77 · 14/10/2020 12:54

Apparently the last time somebody paid full price for a box of Milk Trays was 1895

fantasmasgoria1 · 14/10/2020 12:55

A neighbour bought us a box around she had loads from a birthday. The y were really awful!

JamieLeeCurtains · 14/10/2020 12:55

I still keep emergency food in my bedside cabinet. The babies are in their 20s now.

AriettyHomily · 14/10/2020 12:56

Grim aren't they. I never thought I'd be a chocolate snob but apparently I am. Co op fair trade is beautiful.

Congratulations!

Deux · 14/10/2020 12:59

The vomitty taste of Hershey’s is something to do with the milk. The milk has to be transported long distances across America from cow to factory so they add some kind of acid to it to stop it going off.

Or something like that.

EmNetta · 14/10/2020 13:01

I stopped buying Thorntons after husband treated me to my favoureite fillings from one of their own shops - yes, many years ago. We were boating through Britain, and I guess husband didn't sound like a local, as we discovered (a few miles on) that some were stale. Have never bought any since, as staff must have known they'd be rank.

Last week, Tesco were selling Milk Tray for £3 a box, no way of telling whether they were one layer or two and I didn't know current price. They were so horrible that when shopping helper suggested adding some chocolate to list, I told her I planned to give up chocolate, and why.

I prefer milk chocolate, but G&B was not my favourite. I'll try it again if I see it, meanwhile hoping to come across reduced-price Lindt or other brands recommended here. Such a shame.
BrazenlyDefying · 14/10/2020 13:03

Palm oil. It's foul. It makes chocolate waxy and chewy and disgusting.

But it's cheap. Which is the main factor. If you want decent chocolate then you have to pay decent money. A massive tub of chocolates for £4, or 3 for a tenner is always going to be appallingly cheap shit.

goldfinchfan · 14/10/2020 13:03

Montezuma's is good choc. They do large choc buttons in milk and plain.
also lots of different flavoured bars and also bags of flavoured chocolates....
however i have switched to posh marshmallows for a sweet fix or organic choc which is so rich you only need a couple of sqares to feel good.

Main thing is there are lots of different brands to try and if Cadburys stopped selling that would be a good thing.
The big bad owner, not sure if it is still the plastic cheese company.......stole Cadburys (hostile takeover) and then ruined the chocolate.
Lets stopped buying it. (Green and Blacks have the same owner so not a positive alternative anymore)

Stumpedasatree · 14/10/2020 13:03

@IvySpivey

It's like eating a sweet candle
Exactly the same for me, fatty sweet coating all over mouth and teeth. Grim.
squishee · 14/10/2020 13:09

Congratulations OP!

Is Galaxy still nice?

Am not in the UK, so my "research" opportunities are a bit limited.

Cadbury's buttons used to be nicer than the other stuff, as they were made in Ireland (according to a MNer). I doubt it's still the case though.

My DSibling bought a huge tub of Quality Street last Christmas. They've gone from tins to plastic tubs (!) and the chocolates were so disappointing.

Aldi chocolate all the way.

Couchbettato · 14/10/2020 13:10

When I had my son back in 2019, every one brought me bloody milk trays.

Can't wait till they have babies so I can do the same bloody thing back.

misselphaba · 14/10/2020 13:12

Why are so many people going on about the baby?!?! OP didn't want to leave the baby and is probably still traumatised from previous baby who woke if someone coughed in Brazil (read the thread) to wake the baby.
