4 days post partum. Baby fell asleep on my bed so not in a safe position so I cant leave her to go and get breakfast. Thankfully someone bought me a.box of Milk Tray that I thought I could have.

Fuck me. They are rank. I've had to eat loads cos I'm.starving and my milk has just come in but talk about wasted calories.

OP posts:

I got sent a gift box from a friend that had montezuma chocolates in, plus a chocolate brownie tray bake thing and some gin - that person has been promoted to favourite friend.

I wasn’t able to breastfeed - really did try, stayed in hospital ages, pumped, tried to hand express, got ‘support’ (such as it was) from the feeding team etc. I was devastated for any number of reasons but not the least was feeling like I had to give up on my meticulously planned and stocked snack caddies I had prepared, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. Then I decided I needed them anyway - baby is 10 weeks old now and perfectly happy to be put down for short periods but I still stash emergency snacks about the place 😂

Yes American chocolate is shit because of the long distances they have to travel to transport it around the US - its why they are also not melt in the mouth like good chocolate should be.

I'm no chocolate afficionado but I also agree Cadbury is now shit. I'm surprised there isn't more publicity about it as I'm sure sales must be dropping. I'm a Lindt/Milka girl myself but glad to read the other tips here. Its made me want chocolate NOW!

BTW congrats OP. I remember sitting on the sofa when my two DC were little, each cuddled up sleeping on me when they were ill as I just sat watching the menu of Peter Pan for hours. I had very stiff arms and was very bored. Both at uni now so its boring in a different way.

The sour taste of Hershey's is caused by butyric acid. The "Hershey's process" treats the milk differently to how its treated in European chocolate making, and butyric acid is a byproduct. Butyric acid is also found in cheese and vomit, which is why Hershey's tastes like mouldy old socks or puke to Brits and Europeans. To Americans, that's what chocolate should taste like, to the extent that other US chocolate manufacturers add butyric acid to their recipe.

I lived in the US for a few years for work and lost weight due to lack of 3pm trip to the chocolate machine at work chocolate snacking opportunities.

The only decent Cadbury's product these days is the new DarkMilk stuff, and it doesn't have palm oil in it.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 14/10/2020 13:20

My mil still gives it as gifts because she doesn't eat it herself.

I expect a lot of other people don't realise how it's gone downhill and they are thus able to trade on a very long established name. Which is infuriating really!

lazylinguist · 14/10/2020 13:21

Yep, all those brands are disgusting. I buy Aldi Moser Roth - tastes like proper chocolate. Actually even their less posh Choceur range doesn't have palm oil in it - the whole roasted hazelnut one is amazing!

ChocolateCherrybomb · 14/10/2020 13:21

Have you got a Polish shop anywhere near.

They have some very nice Polish favourites in chocolate bars and other sweet things to try.

Considering that the traditionally British brand chocolates are near enough all made in Poland now, it's a bit strange that they also make their own country's traditional favourites and for several other European countries without making them taste like shit. It must be down to cost cutting/Americanising the taste by the British name but foreign owned companies otherwise the Polish are very adept at chocolate production.

Didlum · 14/10/2020 13:22

The turkish delight was the best one. Now replaced with apple flavoured Envy

SlopesOff · 14/10/2020 13:26

And the orange cream ones have been replaced with something hideous.

Is there anything more hideous than orange cream?

Just a note for the Aldi/Lidl fans, I was given some recently and it DID contain PALM OIL if you are wanting to avoid it. Can't remember what it was but it made me feel ill anyway so went in the bin.

Just buy Tonys Chocolonely if you want proper chocolate and not a box or bar of palm fat.

JimmyJabs · 14/10/2020 13:26

Can I recommend Montezuma's for a non-palm oil brand? I'm sitting here right now with a bag of their peanut butter snowballs, and I'm seriously doubting my ability to put them away unfinished.

cushioncovers · 14/10/2020 13:27

Yep milk tray are vile now

ChocolateCoffeeCake · 14/10/2020 13:27

Theyve been horrid for a while. I don't rate Thorntons either. Honestly find Sainsbury's own brand much nicer.

SlopesOff · 14/10/2020 13:27

So that's how they get it to taste like vomit.

movingonup20 · 14/10/2020 13:28

Tell your friends to get Aldi own brand champagne truffles, far nicer! Top tip - stash of rosemary crackers, and a packet of dark choc digestives at every possible sitting point, plus water bottles , covers all bases. (My h was back at work on day 3 leaving me with a newborn and toddler 6000 miles from nearest family, you learn quick! Congratulations btw

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/10/2020 13:32

They are bliddy horrible!!!

IIRC there was an entire chocolate thread taken over with the foulness of Milk Tray last year.

I bought myself a box as a treat, and like you, had to force myself to eat them - but I will never buy them again, no matter how heavily discounted they are.

Absolute MUCK since the American's took them over.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/10/2020 13:32

(This will be all of our food when this government makes trade deals with the US - everything they eat is chemical or adulterated.)

violetrosemummy · 14/10/2020 13:34

@OhToBeASeahorse
You are hilarious, love your attitude x

funnelfanjo · 14/10/2020 13:37

So that's how they get it to taste like vomit

Yep. While I was in the US I found this split my colleagues. Once introduced to British stuff, many couldn't get enough of it.

A minority just didn't like it and had a reaction similar to how we react to Hershey's. To them it didn't taste right at all - too smooth and sweet.

And this was just big bags of Cadbury's picked up in Duty Free. No way was I letting them near my Hotel Chocolat stash. Grin

@MadameXanadu

Terry’s chocolate orange used to be fabulous. It’s pretty revolting now; waxy, greasy and sticky. I used to love a Milk Tray too but they have gone the same way. I enjoy some soya products but keep it limited. Many companies have increased the amount they put in chocolate over the years. Soy Lecithin I think - it acts as an emulsifier that is supposed to aid melting. It just leaves such a horrible after taste, I can often taste the unpleasant mix of bean curd and cocoa. Soy is genetically modified so there are issues there with allergies. I think the‘ Excellence’ range from Lindt has no soy.
Yes, it's the emulsifiers that are making chocolate have a horrible texture now - so many and they are in everything (I had to look hard to find olive oil spread without emulsifiers).

Emulsifiers also really mess with your insides too - they emulsify your gut contents and make lots of people ill.

I try to avoid and can't eat any Cadburys chocolate now. But they are in so many foodstuffs now.

MagicSummer · 14/10/2020 13:38

If anyone ever has the chance to go to the USA again, may I recommend Sees Candies. These are lovely, big chocolates like they used to be and do not contain butyric acid (I have just checked).

Ruined by an American giant..... They're good at driving down standards. Isn't that what Trump stands for?

Waitrose, Lindt, LIDL and ALDI are your friend....

JayeAshe · 14/10/2020 13:44

Has any else noticed their chocolate is no longer called Cadbury 's - it's been Cadbury since the Kraft/Mondelez takeover ?

Dailyhandtowelwash · 14/10/2020 13:46

It always was Cadbury. The names of things are Cadbury's Milk Tray because they are the Milk Tray of Cadbury. Cadbury World has always been Cadbury World.

JayeAshe · 14/10/2020 13:49

Yep, I'm talking about the labelling change from Cadbury's to Cadbury on the actual products Grin

mrshonda · 14/10/2020 13:52

Hotel Chocolat is what you need now x
