OhToBeASeahorse · 14/10/2020 10:46

4 days post partum. Baby fell asleep on my bed so not in a safe position so I cant leave her to go and get breakfast. Thankfully someone bought me a.box of Milk Tray that I thought I could have.

Fuck me. They are rank. I've had to eat loads cos I'm.starving and my milk has just come in but talk about wasted calories.

Terry’s chocolate orange used to be fabulous. It’s pretty revolting now; waxy, greasy and sticky. I used to love a Milk Tray too but they have gone the same way. I enjoy some soya products but keep it limited. Many companies have increased the amount they put in chocolate over the years. Soy Lecithin I think - it acts as an emulsifier that is supposed to aid melting. It just leaves such a horrible after taste, I can often taste the unpleasant mix of bean curd and cocoa. Soy is genetically modified so there are issues there with allergies. I think the‘ Excellence’ range from Lindt has no soy.

crochetmonkey74 · 14/10/2020 12:13

what are nice chocolates now? I agree all the boxed ones are horrible- I even think Lindt has changed

NellieElly · 14/10/2020 12:13

I wouldn’t even give a box of Roses or Milk Tray to someone I didn’t like, they are utterly disgusting now. OP, hope you’ve been gifted some delicious chocolate AND it is within easy reach!

TheVanguardSix · 14/10/2020 12:14

I mentioned Tony's Chocolonely in my first post. Read about it. It's not only gorgeous chocolate, but it's totally ethical. The founder's a cool dude. In fact, it's the only chocolate I buy at the moment because it's delicious and the founder is actually doing something decent for mankind.

It's like eating a sweet candle
Perfect description Grin

Chewy wax.

StarCat2020 · 14/10/2020 12:15

I found the half and half chocolate bar they do is the closest in flavour to how I remember Cadbury's chocolate used to taste (I spent a lot of time researching this.)
Only researched?

I hope you carried out extensive testing to confirm your research!

It is good for those wanting to give up but it's a sad end for a brand I grew up with and respected.

We were always told how they looked after their staff etc. Being one of the Quaker businesses.

@WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo

My friend uses a small beer fridge as her bedside table. It's full of snacks and has her teasmade on top. At first I was Hmm but now I'm ooooooohhhhh, someone's way ahead of their time.
This is actually a very good idea.

Almost all chocolate is ruined by palm oil now. Godiva uses palm oil. Supermarket 'premium' ranges use it. I can't understand anyone being able to stomach Thorntons still. Most chocolate is now actively unpleasant.

Good for the health obviously but a bit heartbreaking that my childhood memories can't ever be recaptured.

Papergirl1968 · 14/10/2020 12:22

I actually can’t tell the difference between chocolate now and ye olde chocolate of days gone by, but last time I had Milk Tray the fillings were odd. The apple flavoured one was the worst. Apple crunch or something? Who wants apple flavoured chocolate for goodness sake?!

nevermorelenore · 14/10/2020 12:22

@TheVanguardSix

Cadburys now tastes like Hersheys

American here. Nothing tastes like Hershey's. Not even Cadbury's has stooped that low. Hershey's kisses taste of vomit. No, they really do. It's like they use burnt/sour milk in their chocolate. It's very acidic and just gross. I'll take a Milk Tray over Hershey's all day long. Bournville is still good though... I think? I like Bournville chocolate. I'm not a dark chocolate fan but this one I like.

The vomity taste of Hershey's is awful. I had a cookies and cream bar once, and it left the kind of weird pukey aftertaste in your mouth. Like if you drink really sugary booze and throw up afterwards. I don't know what the hell they're doing to make chocolate taste like that.

Milk Tray is pretty bad. It's the kind of chocolate you give to people when you can't be arsed to get them a gift so have just nipped to the supermarket on the way to see them, and they're usually paired with a bottle of prosecco. The strawberry one is like chocolate wrapped calpol.

BackBeatTheWordisOnTheStreet · 14/10/2020 12:23

Oh my god whenever I started breastfeeding I used to get massively hungry and thirsty. I started leaving drinks and snacks around the house as I always forgot until I was trapped!

YANBU about milk tray YUCK! Not as bad as hersheys though. When I first ate one I thought it had gone off before the dawning realisation it was actually meant to taste like that!

grapewine · 14/10/2020 12:24

@coffeeandjuice

Cadbury's isn't good l now. Milk Tray is the biggest disappointment. My Grandma brought me some. She then rang me a few days later after trying them herself to apologise for sending me a box of awful chocolates.
Your grandma sounds great :)
Haggled · 14/10/2020 12:25

You all need to try Ritter Sport. It's not very giftable as it's only sold in bars, but it is divine. It's German so no American oily gunk in there! You can get lots of flavour choices in Lidl, possibly Aldi too. I've seen it in Asda on occasion. The best ones are cornflake, butter biscuit, and praline.

picklecustard · 14/10/2020 12:28

Totally agree that so much branded chocolate has completely changed for the worse! :(

Sexnotgender · 14/10/2020 12:29

I saw Ritter sport in Sainsbury’s the other day.

grapewine · 14/10/2020 12:29

Marabou Premium dark chocolate is my go-to now. Is that available in the UK? And yes to Ritter Sport. For gifts - Hotel Chocolat.

MagicSummer · 14/10/2020 12:30

@Haggled - yes Ritter Sport is very nice. I love Lindt but order it from Germany and it is different from the stuff you get here. For a treat I can recommend Leonidas Belgian Chocolates - made with fresh milk and cream, and Neuhaus, although they are expensive.

Milk Tray is now horrible - I remember the delicious smell when you opened the box and the lovely fillings - Lime Barrel, Fudge, Strawberry, Coconut Ice, soft Nougat!

theamplifier · 14/10/2020 12:31

So is there any decent variety box of chocolates out there? I don't really like a block of plain chocolate but I love a variety box or tin where you can choose which flavour you have and fight over who gets what.

I would love to know an alternative to quality street or milk tray that doesn't taste cheap and oily.

BeansBehindMyKnees · 14/10/2020 12:34

Cadbury's chocolate is a travesty now, tbh. Horrible, horrible chocolate. Might as well eat a chunk of coold chip fat.

Darkmilk is about the only one edible.

Otherwise, Tony's is definately the way to do.

Djchickpea · 14/10/2020 12:34

So all you chocolate fans out there - what's a decent brand that does big tin versions suitable for Xmas pigging?

Dailyhandtowelwash · 14/10/2020 12:36

None, sadly. All the big tins are horrible.

I do Hotel Chocolat for boxes, although they do use palm oil in some ingredients still - not the chocolate but some other ingredients. They did say they were working on that but I don't think it's changed yet. But they're far more expensive than Milk Tray etc. so I basically don't do boxes of chocolate as a smallish gesture any more.

BeansBehindMyKnees · 14/10/2020 12:37

@Djchickpea

None. Well, Lindt now do a big tin version of their truffles but it only has about 3 chocs in a mssive tin, so that's out.

It'll be a few decent bars here for Xmas. Not very festive but infinately more delish.
