When and where were your clubbing days?

London based for me. Started off in places like SW1, Club UK, MOS, The Satellite Club, Cafe de Paris. Then progressed on to The End, Turnmills and Fabric via Bagleys and The Cross.

I have so much nostalgia for those carefree irresponsible days pre children. I have continued going to gigs and festivals but haven’t set foot in a club for a long long time. I think it would be a totally different vibe nowadays with everyone totally preoccupied with their phones.

What were your favourite venues/club nights?

I love seals, so no clubbing for me.

CleverCatty · 20/08/2020 09:16

Tell me about your clubbing outfits...

I've kept one short top and skirt - very Geri from Spice Girls in a sort of turquoise PVC and a Karen Millen macrame/crochet short sleeved top in turquoise, yellow and orange or gold. I had a similar crochet top from Karen Millen in blues - dark, navy, bright but with long sleeves and more fitted. Jeans from Oasis with glitter in them. Hyper Hyper for more clothes, Red or Dead shoes

A crushed velvet catsuit with a sort of looped chain silver belt. (From Mark One at the grotty end of the Manchester Arndale)

Vintage sixties and seventies suede A line mini skirts from Afflecks Palace.

I only really wore red, purple and black. Often black lacey "bodies" with a suede waistcoat on top. (Cheers Madonna) lace gloves. Lots of ribbons in my crimped hair.

Wolford tights (those "sealskin" effect ones to keep in theme Grin)

Pink matte lipstick like Wendy James in Transvision Vamp. Lancome Maquimat foundation. Bourjois eyeshadow.

Feck but I was hot.

we tended to wear red, purple and black too - Peter Werth dresses??

Pink matte lipstick, yes, Lancome ivory foundation - god knows what it was called - thick black eyeliner and Lancome mascara (Definicils??)

Morgan was a source of clubbing wear - our Aussie mate who lived here for a few years was amazed how cheap it was compared to Oz, my mate Yvonne who was from Coventry had some outfits from Owen Owen

and lots of dodgy clubbing gear from Camden Market

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 20/08/2020 10:50

Morgan! Yes, I had some Morgan tops.
Bet the foundation was Maquimat. I was Ivory too. There was also an amazing Almay one which had similar coverage.
Also a Bourjois "thing" that I now realise must have been a primer- but mid 80s. It was called blanc de base.

CleverCatty · 20/08/2020 12:35

I recall sometime late 90s there was a huge sale in Morgan in London near where I worked.

They were selling tops etc for £10 or less and my friend asked her to get her a leopard sheer top, i bought one thing lol, my colleague at work was off to Ibiza and managed to buy her entire outfits for very cheap!

The makeup I'm on about was the glitter on cheeks, eyes, stick on sequins in shapes of stars, hearts etc. We even used spray in hair colour!

Another 90s Glasgow girl here,

Tunnel
Strathclyde Union
Archaos
Arches
Garage sometimes
Bonkers sometimes
Clatty Pats for a laugh if up that way
Cathouse
Glasgow Uni

My favourite nights started at October Cafe for drinks, then on to the Tunnel. My boyfriend and his mates did a lot of DJing in those days, it was a great time.

Moved to Leeds in '99 and did Town And Country, Majestyk, and was a dancer in Heaven & Hell for a bit to help out a mate, then got a proper job and the clubbing faded away.

Oh those happy carefree days Smile

Late 80s - mid nineties mainly south coast and London. There was this club called Central Park that was split into 2 separate clubs with ravers upstairs but there was a huge window, so the drunken revellers having a 2am slow dance could see us all gurning away. Was such a weird set-up. One of the blokes (sadly now dead) I shared a house with started putting on all-nighters at Sterns, they were outstanding - outside of cities the clubs had always ended at 2am(!).

The first legal (not in a field) Energy I went to (Brixton Academy?) some poor sod got stabbed right next to me on the dancefloor, at the same time somebody let off some tear-gas. That stuff really hurts.

Crazy Club and Sin at the Astoria, bouncers telling you to stop dancing on the tables in the gallery in case you fell down onto the dancefloor and smashed your skull in and nobody taking a blind bit of notice. Comfy clothes for clubbing. Bouncy drugs.

Went to the Camden Palais during 6th form in London but didn't get into it. Really got into clubbing in Manchester when I went to uni, 1991-94.

Squirrels Bar in Oak House is where it all began!
Brickhouse - went there for disco on Friday nights for a while
Hacienda - tried it once but felt too cold and too loud
Sankey's Soap - loved it!! best music, friendliest vibes
Megadog at the students union, was amazing.
Tribal Gathering in a field all night, Drum Club played, still love them

Am turning 50 this month and all I want is to go dancing! Haven't been to a club in years. Where can I get that Sankeys / Megadog / Drum Club vibe in London? Can it be found??

powershowerforanhour · 04/01/2022 00:40

Has the Clyro Court had a mention yet ;-)

GinJeanie · 04/01/2022 02:14

Underground on Cookridge Street in Leeds... AMAZING club sadly no more!

Delamero · 04/01/2022 15:24

Oh my god I miss those days!
Dreamscape in Milton Keynes followed by the far cooler (I thought) ClubUK, Cross, Bagleys, Turnmills. Tribal Gathering etc
I remember being at ClubUK and seeing Carl Cox when there was literally a couple of hundred people far more intimate than now. Still like to think I can do Ibiza etc but the reality is probably not so great in your mid forty’s. Always think kids miss out now, everything is seen through a phone screen to record the moment.

Heatherjayne1972 · 04/01/2022 16:39

Reading in the 90’s. - utopia was THE place
to be
Washington heights, level one,

The thorn walk tavern and the after dark club hold some memories but the after dark club was sticky and served drinks in plastic cups ( not a classy place)

All gone now turned into flats and and an ikea

Late noughties Brighton - the Arc was our favourite.

evilharpy · 04/01/2022 17:02

@beautifulstranger101

The 90s and noughties! Brighton. The event, the paradox, the zap club, the jazz rooms, casablancas, sometimes revenge, the gloucester for back 2 skool night, and dynamite boogaloo! I got so drunk in there once I was chucked out. memories
I still to this day miss Event, one night that stands out was Paul Oakenfold around 1998 or 1999. I remember the Honey Club as well.
evilharpy · 04/01/2022 17:21

Late 90s/early 2000s in NI, so places like Coach in Banbridge, Kellys in Portrush, The Grill and Sister Saras in Letterkenny. Oh and Laceys in Dundalk which was equally brilliant and terrible.

Plus a very happy stint in Brighton where the clubs were much better!
