When and where were your clubbing days?

London based for me. Started off in places like SW1, Club UK, MOS, The Satellite Club, Cafe de Paris. Then progressed on to The End, Turnmills and Fabric via Bagleys and The Cross.

I have so much nostalgia for those carefree irresponsible days pre children. I have continued going to gigs and festivals but haven’t set foot in a club for a long long time. I think it would be a totally different vibe nowadays with everyone totally preoccupied with their phones.

What were your favourite venues/club nights?

Birmingham mid to late 90s/early 2000s. The Dome (that red carpet!). Atomic Jam at the Q club. Snobs, Bobby Browns, The Venue, Sanctuary. Fabric and Turnmills in London. Illegal raves. Clubs in Sydney (Trade?). Lots of festivals. Loads of other places that I can't remember the names of as hideous memory. The club scene completely changed though.

Daisychainsandglitter · 27/06/2020 15:44

Yes snobs has moved now. It's been turned into a pub but apparently they still have nights upstairs although I've never been!

Goinghome20 · 27/06/2020 15:48

Glasgow 80s/90s

Ultra tech
Boulie
Joe Paps
Tin Pan Alley
Clattys
Cardinal follies
Tuxedo Princess
Mardigras
Warehouse
Sub club
Volcano

Then London mid90s onwards

414
Clapham grand
Fridge
Mass

Those were the lost years... great fun!

Now my idea of a good time is somewhat different.

Glad I was young back then thoughWink

@Daisychainsandglitter I also started at Birmingham uni in 2002, wonder if we have crossed paths? Smile

HotSince82 · 27/06/2020 15:54

I think its a terrible shame that ecstasy was demonised and everybody started on the lemo. Horrible drug.

mintich · 27/06/2020 16:06

Swindon:
The Brunel Rooms
Cairos/Eros
Kaos/D&D

Liverpool:

Leeds:
Majestyk

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 27/06/2020 16:13

Started clubbing in 1989 in Manchester, The Haçienda, Friday night (dance music) all nighters at The Banshee and Rockworld and various illegal raves.

During the 90’s we went to Paradise Factory, No.1 Club, Danceteria, Sometimes travelled over to Leeds or Liverpool for Vague, Speed Queen or Garlands.

Then in the 00’s it was Cream, Gods, Crasher, Sundissential, Sankeys and Tangled which was where I met DH and finally settled down!

I loved my clubbing days and we go to Luminosity Beach Festival in Amsterdam every year (should be there this weekend 😢) and DH still has his decks set up in the cellar.

LoafingLiz · 27/06/2020 16:32

Was there a Tall Trees in Cornwall?

I remember being on holiday with best friend and her family, early 80s so we were around 14.

Me and BF got dolled up and went disco dancing.
I ended up shit faced falling down the steps onto the dance floor in my pink stilleto's😂.

LoafingLiz · 27/06/2020 16:33

Newquay is ringing a bell.

Starksforthewin · 27/06/2020 17:11

I’ve definitely been to the Tall Trees when on holiday in Cornwall. Almost certain it was Newquay.
I seem to remember dancing to Hot Chocolate, You Win Again, there. Loved that track. ❣️

Martysmarvellousmeals · 27/06/2020 17:13

@Ariela as I mentioned up thread Tuxedo Junction had the phones on the tables it was in the centre of the city, not on a boat, the first floating ex car ferry was the Tuxedo Princes, then the Tuxedo Royal, had my engagement do on the first one! Then it went to Glasgow, then cam back and the Royal went to Middlesburgh (and is now rusting down there somewhere)

Saw a brand new car crushed under one of the entrance ramps, stupid idiot clearly did not think about tides in the river Tyne when they thought it was a good idea to park it there.

So many memories on this thread!

My earliest clubbing days were in Cardiff, from 1988 to 1990. I was into rock but progressed to goth quite quickly. The first club I ever went to was Bogiez when I was 17 and I thought it was absolute heaven. So many boys in Spandex pants and big hair! I was there every Friday and Saturday. And Metros in Newport (we had to get the milk train home). Then I discovered The Square Club which became my spiritual home! I moved to London in 1990 and went to Hellfire Club on Oxford Street and Full Tilt at the Electric Ballroom and of course, Slimelight. Had my own club night for a bit in the venue where Hellfire was held, too.

In the mid 90s I was totally caught up in the Britpop thing. I was working in Camden and going to Smashing, Popscene, Blow Up, Camden Palace on Tuesdays, and I loved the short lived Romo thing - Club Skinny and Arcadia. We used to drink at the Good Mixer and The Spread Eagle and watch bands at the Monarch and the Dublin Castle. It was the absolute best time.

Then I got old and boring, the end.

Fuckinellitsme · 27/06/2020 17:22

Also I'm loving seeing all the Newcastle clubbing memories - I've lived here for 21 years and know a few of the places, though having DD meant my clubbing days were somewhat curtailed by the time I moved here! I loved Satellite which was in a venue where the Newcastle College campus now stands, though. Would've been about 2002/3. And the Playrooms (I think) behind The Gate - it had loads of floors and was pretty indie on a Friday night.

raspran · 27/06/2020 17:32

Envious of all of you with clubs to go to, where we lived it was the youth club or a barn dance at various farmsConfused

Sunnydayshereatlast · 27/06/2020 17:36

The boat (newcastle) used to sell hot turkey sandwiches at about 10. 30 . My bff smashed a tooth... More alcohol numbed her pain!!
1996 we used to go!!
10. 30 now is past my bedtime!!

Ariela · 27/06/2020 17:37

@MartysMarvellousMeals

Are you sure that about 1985? the Tuxedo whateveritwascalled boat didn't also have phones? I'm quite sure I went there once, it was definitely the boat and I'm certain it did have phones.

Daisychainsandglitter · 27/06/2020 17:41

@HotSince82- quite possibly! Such good times! Smile

Martysmarvellousmeals · 27/06/2020 17:45

You could be right but I cannot recall any pones, prob too dizzy off the revolving dance floor, first night out there in 1984, January bloody freezing.

But it was owned by the same guy who had the Tuxedo Junction, ah those were the day before I got into metal!

augustusglupe · 27/06/2020 17:45

Nottingham Rock City - Saturday nights
Castle Pub - Sunday nights
Zhivagos - Monday
Isabellas in Long Eaton - Thurs/Fri night or a wine bar in Nottingham called Hardys bar
After hours a few gay clubs, Whispers and Part Two.
All this was very early 80s

OutComeTheWolves · 27/06/2020 17:48

Was it Cosmic ballroom? I loved it there.
40somethingJBJ · 27/06/2020 17:52

Mid 90’s in Derby - most often the Rockhouse, but also frequented Ritzy, Sloppy Joes, Pink Coconut, Jimmy’s, Blue Note etc depending on who I was out with. Ah, the good old days! Night out, 10 Embassy, chips after and a taxi home, and still have change from £20!

FairNotFair · 27/06/2020 18:25

Fuckinellitsme
So nice to hear someone mention The Square Club - my favourite in 1990-93. Also Clwb Ifor Bach … and there was a club where you got a raffle ticket for food as part of your entry (I think it was part of the licensing conditions) but I can't remember its name!

CMOTDibbler · 27/06/2020 18:30

@fairnotfair that place where you had to get food (wasn't it chilli and chips or something random like that) was the Stage Door. It was as they had a late - 3am I think - license

soundsystem · 27/06/2020 18:38

The Arches and Optimo in Glasgow, and Bugged Out.

Then I moved to London so Fabric and The End for me, too Grin

Ducksarenotmyfriends · 27/06/2020 18:42

90s/early 2000s in Manchester and Liverpool. Tangled, Sankeys, Music Box and occasionally Rockworld when I wanted to hang out with my old school friends 😁 then Liverpool was Bugged Out and Alien Resonance. The odd squat party/illegal rave.

Now live somewhere totally rural and generally an upstanding member of the community HaloWink
