Did you read he is due to be released next week 😱

Blackbear19 · 24/06/2020 23:21

Yes I knew it was very soon if they couldn't get the rape case to stick because of the technicality on the extrodition.

KatherineJaneway · 25/06/2020 05:20

Let's hope they don't free him.

Arewedone · 25/06/2020 06:07

Let’s hope not! Hopefully the police are onto something as there hasn’t been anything leaked for a while now. Hopefully they received enough leads.

KatherineJaneway · 25/06/2020 06:26

Agree. It has also gone quiet on the letter issue.

Smallsteps88 · 25/06/2020 11:44

I think if I was the German police I would stop sharing info with the press as everything was taken and misconstrued or made out to be a lie (like the letters to the McCanns) it must have been very frustrating for them as although they needed information it was creating a load of extra shit as well. Hopefully now they have enough to charge him.

Arewedone · 25/06/2020 18:45

German prosecutor has made a statement today to the German press

Seems they don’t have enough evidence. Ruling is due on July 16th re the rape charge

deepwatersolo · 25/06/2020 19:13

Seems they don’t have enough evidence.

That was my fear from the start. I do not think he will be released in July, though. I believe that going public had the specific aim of signalling to the respective decision makers that early release is a bad idea - to buy time.

The real question is (imo), if he will be released early next year. I think they would have an option to keep him behind bars until the situation about the rape conviction of the 72 year old is clarified. Only if that conviction is dropped and no retrial planned would they have to let him go.

Unless they get anything else on him. And with this appeal they are trying to get that...

Blackbear19 · 25/06/2020 19:17

Remember they are looking at other cases too. Fingers crossed someone will crack and give them the evidence they need.

deepwatersolo · 25/06/2020 19:44

Yes, my hope, too.

Arewedone · 26/06/2020 01:57

Yes something has to stick, they seem so close

KatherineJaneway · 26/06/2020 06:23

A few tabloids are running with a story today:

"But now in an astonishing U-turn Mr Wolters has told a local newspaper: ''You also have to be realistic enough that the investigation may not lead to a charge for the murder of Madeleine McCann. It could be stopped if we fail to find the missing evidence."

He told theBraunschweig Zeitung: ''I am currently unable to predict the outcome of our investigation but we are still convinced of the guilt of the accused and hope for further promising investigative approaches.""

Hopefully it is a tactic to encourage more witnesses to come forward to ensure a watertight case, rather than not having enough evidence to proceed with prosecution.
Daily Telegraph yesterday had a large article quoting a former friend. Circumstantial mostly but someone's circumstantial evidence may be the little piece that makes the case stick.

MiddlesexGirl · 26/06/2020 08:04

*Not yesterday, earlier in the week.

Arewedone · 26/06/2020 09:18

Am I being naive in thinking if he is released they just re arrest him for the rape and charge him.

Blackbear19 · 26/06/2020 10:12

I don't think they can just re-arrest him for the rape as he has already been tried and sentenced for it.

LadyEloise · 26/06/2020 15:31

I said it before and I'll say it again- The Portugese police involved in the search for Madeleine are a disgrace to their profession.

Blackbear19 · 26/06/2020 17:00

I said it before and I'll say it again- The Portugese police involved in the search for Madeleine are a disgrace to their profession.
They haven't just let Madeline down, they've let Joana down and the wee boy on the beach.

There may well be others and who knows how many rape victims or other children who have been let down.

saltycat · 26/06/2020 20:29

I doubt this will ever be solved.

So the speculation will continue.

saltycat · 26/06/2020 20:34

LadyEloise

What about the British Police who were ordered not to investigate anything to do with the family? Look up Colin Sutton in the British police and get back to me with a realistic opinion there.

The whole thing stinks. But there we are.

Viviennemary · 26/06/2020 20:41

I think putting out the conflicting reports publicly was wrong. First they say they had evidence Madeleine had died. Then they backtracked. Then her parents were sent a letter but they didn't get it. Then the letter was sent via the UK police and they didn't send it on. Little wonder people speculate what's going on. Bad enough two countries police forces involved and now three.

KatherineJaneway · 27/06/2020 08:16

But @Viviennemary, they are still saying they know she is dead, aren't they?

deepwatersolo · 27/06/2020 13:30

Look up Colin Sutton in the British police and get back to me with a realistic opinion there.

I've looked him up. So, the operation wanted to prevent that British inspectors are led down the garden path by the Portuguese police? Oh well.

I have just reviewed the Austrian case of Natascha Kampusch. (It happened - roughly - in my neck of the woods). And I have to say, I do no longer believe the single perpetrator theory (even though she has always maintained there was only Priklopil). I just don't. Two high Austrian judges didn't and were dragged through court for it. One investigator didn't and ended up suicided (with a foresnsic expert saying it was no suicide and his notebook missing...). And a witness maintaining for all those years she saw 2 men grab the girl and correctly describing the car as it turns out...

I'm still inclined to believe CB acted on his own and didn't pass anyone on. But, damn.

deepwatersolo · 28/06/2020 18:17

German police are dead set on keeping this in the news.

9now.nine.com.au/60-minutes/german-prosecutors-believe-madeleine-mccann-is-dead-60-minutes/c12305de-2465-4751-98ae-e0ba468d8fa3

I can only hope that this is a deliberate strategy and not amateur hour.

(Reminds me of a case of some right wing bomb series in the 90's. At one point airwaves were saturated with the case and how police had leads and whatnot. It resulted in the guy basically running amok when getting into a routine traffic control and bombing his own hands off in the process... Not sure how that could translate to the CB scenario, though, given he is in prison. And why do they apparently focus on English language media with this strategy?).
