It must be difficult to pick while the neighbour is looking! One doesn't want to be reserved about these thingsGrin

I fancy a fruit tree but with two trees already (though Elderberry isn't technically a tree) I'm a bit out of space. Plus both neighbours on either side love loads of light even though when its hot the sunlight is unbearable through huge doors.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 22/03/2020 12:52

Spent morning in howling gale raking up grass clippings for the chooks, who are loving picking through them for bugs.

We are not very good at this self-isolating malarkey, friend came round for some eggs and we sat in the kitchen for a chat. I hadnt realised how social I actually am!

DD1's friend from Alps who went back to Oz has tested pos despite no symptoms. Which is worrying (how come Oz can test but not UK?), but given that we've all been in the same rooms for the last 4 days, seems a bit late to panic... we are self-distancing as much as poss but not actually self-isolating.

I have heard of chicken theft...

PenguinOrHippo · 22/03/2020 20:53

Just checking in with everyone, hope you all are ok. Yolo, I am rubbish at the social distancing as well. When BigGirlHippo got really sick, Mr Hippo suggested that he tried to find a place for him and her to stay. I ended up sleeping next to her...

Am having a G&T, trying to make it last. I will have to try to make this distance learning work tomorrow and dreading it. I saw this meme

Homeschooling is going great, two students suspended for fighting and one teacher fired for drinking on the job

That could be us tomorrow!!

7Penguins · 22/03/2020 21:03

chicken theft

I'm a little scared that civilisation is breaking down at the first signs of inconvenience.
Imagine if we were facing real adversity, like war/apocalyptic event/alien attack... it'll be Mad Max within a weekShock

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 22/03/2020 21:10

To be fair, the weather is so shit here that if anyone wanted to steal my chickens they'd have to brave the howling gales and then catch the buggers - good luck with that. They are friendly, but reach out to touch them and there is massive squawking, flapping, and flitting away in all directions. Beautiful sunshine today but winds over 40mph. I have blutacked the letterbox shut...

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 22/03/2020 21:18

Ha penguin feeling your homeschooling woes.

Well neither of mine require homeschooling (but I did it voluntarily for 6 years) but as we're self isolating, and they have already suceeded in me having to leave the house once in order to not blow up on them, I have informed their father they're unlikely to survive long enough to carry his name forward.

He seems resigned to it.

You're not kidding, 7. Wait till people realise that once the warehouses are empty there will be no more out of season produce from abroad and that local producers expect to be paid proper prices.

The captain has switched the seatbelt sign on, we're going into turbulence...

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 22/03/2020 22:38

I do think the media are somewhat responsible for the frenetic shopping. The DM has had nothing but alarmist headlines for weeks now. At least 5 stories at any time on front online page.

I don't think people intended to go crazy I think a few panicked and then like a stone rolling down hill it kind of snowballed.

I was really disheartened last week but I have been bouyed by all the reports I've heard on here of people trying to help, although I've not availed myself of it personally. I think fear is powerful and there wasn't/hadn't been enough calm voices loud enough to be heard!

I went corner shop today. All was peace and tranquility they had a ton of extra dog and cat food just sitting in the shop so in my area at least I think things have settled for the foreseeable.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 22/03/2020 22:40

Stealing hens seems like a lot of trouble to go through!

WaddiMiss · 23/03/2020 11:36

Morning everyone!

You have inspired me to start a reasons to be cheerful thread (not sure if its been done before!)

I hope everyone is ok, all ok in Waddimiss land so far!

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 23/03/2020 16:12

Morning all! Hope everyone is well, or if not, better than yesterday.

Today I thought I would brave an Aldi shop as we needed bread and milk. Instead of going to our usual store I went to the next nearest just because it's more rural and I thought we might encounter less germ ridden humans.

Do you know, it was fine. Plenty of food, not many people, very civilised, with most people observing the 2 metre rule and dodging round each other. Restricted to four of any item (loo rolls only one pack per person ) so no-one was emptying the shelves and there was enough for everyone.

I feel very heartened by today's experience. When people show restraint and consideration for others, the system works.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 23/03/2020 16:12

That should read "good afternoon" Blush

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 23/03/2020 16:13

Also for the pedants, "Fewer" not "less" Grin

WaddiMiss · 23/03/2020 16:53

My im glad your shopping trip went ok and there wad plenty for you 😊.

I really wish we had a car right now! We usually use public transport to go to our local aldi but not doing that at the moment! I did just manage to get and asda delivery slot for the 10th april hopefully our food fresh food will last! (Im sure it will we are living on chocolate at the moment! 😂)

7Penguins · 23/03/2020 18:06

I went to Sainsbury’s today. Not many people in, there was fresh food, but no eggs, mince, pasta, pulses, toilet paper or paracetamol.

Slightly better than a few days ago.

WaddiMiss · 23/03/2020 18:37

Hopefully the shops will go back to normal now!

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 23/03/2020 19:11

Seriously worried about low stocks of cheap drinkable red Wine.

But reasons to be cheerful: DH had phone consult with oncologist today - his bloods show NO sign of cancer, and although oncologist had not seen MRI results they had been discussed at MDT meeting and no further action reqd!

I am having lots and lots of Wine and will have more...

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 23/03/2020 19:20

Yaaaay Yolo great news for DH. Yes enjoy the drink!!WineWineStar

Ilovellamasandpenguins · 23/03/2020 19:23

yolo that’s good news - pleased for you, Mr Yolo and family.

7Penguins · 23/03/2020 19:39

Very happy for you, yolo this is lovely news!

Things here are pretty bad - I am broken and crying about the failed sleep training. Booked a video course with a sleep consultant tomorrow. I'm feeling very sad and sorry for myself, baby and Mr Worfs. Sad

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 23/03/2020 19:48

aw 7 no sleep is the absolute fucking pits. So long ago, I cant remember how we cracked it. But I do remember DD1 crying outside our bedroom door for nights on end while newborn DD2 pretty much slept. I think I just got into bed with her. You have my utmost sympathy.

WaddiMiss · 23/03/2020 21:27

Yolo that is great news! You must be so relieved!

Oh 7 🙁 even though it probably doesn't feel like it you are doing amazingly!

PenguinOrHippo · 23/03/2020 22:00

Oh Yolo, that is the best news, I am so happy for you!! Yes, lots of Wine to celebrate.

7 , so sorry you are having a hard time. It will be better. It was a while ago, but whatever you do, it will end up ok. Cannot remember if I shared this (sorry if I am repeating myself).

BigGirlHippo was sleep trained, I found the process awful, but we came through it and she is a sound sleeper (unless very sick).

LittleBoyHippo, half hearted sleep training, was always a terrible sleeper. Has just stopped coming into our bed at night (but did start to fall asleep by himself about 2 years ago).

LittleHippo, never sleep trained, always falling asleep on me, next to me, coming into my bed as soon as she was out of the cot (before screamed if she woke up alone). Now (7) falls asleep alone, sleeps through usually, no problems at all.

I know it sounds far away, but they all get there in the end somehow. Don’t beat yourself up over it. It will be ok. Flowers

PenguinOrHippo · 23/03/2020 22:09

Oh dear. Lockdown. And small flat, children still under the weather and homeschooling going to pots. Nobody want to do the cheerful exercises and we have no printer, so I can’t print the rubbish out.

I am wondering two things:

  1. is BigGirlHippo (11) really worried and hiding it? She has a constant, really bad tummy ache and a history of abdominal migraines. I will try to find some hatha yoga flows for tomorrow. Maybe that would relax her? Or should we try to get an online consultation with a doctor? Having gone through a complete series of tests for her tummy aches three years ago, I know how hard it is to pinpoint tummy aches in children.

  2. Is wine an essential item? Mr Hippo has order a massive lot of wine from an off licence. We could really do with some wine here. But will they be allowed to deliver?

WaddiMiss · 23/03/2020 22:38

Hippo it could be, when i saw the news tonight my stomach turned and i felt really sick and nervous. Has she got any other symptoms?
Yoga sounds good? Do you know any reflexology that might help?

Haha as far as i believe delivery's are still happening (amazon is still delivering in italy), so hopefully it will come for you!
