Here continues the tale of the Robbing Butcher, his whimsical opening hours, and TheMustressMhor's daily quest for his finest produce.

However, I can block the Robbing Butcher on FB if I so choose, and it costs me nothing to do so.

I would have considered paying extra for MN Premium ("MN Royal"?) much more happily if it hadn't happened in these circumstances. And I would have preferred to pay for an inclusive, not exclusive, service.
At the moment I feel things like MN can be a lifeline for some. It doesn't feel right for them to suggest payment just 3 or so weeks into lockdown; can things have got so dire so suddenly?

And the payment isn't just a temporary charitable support for MN by those who can afford it for those who can't, but a whole new two-tier system that will continue post-CV, even when the advertising revenue picks up.
So, they've only just thought of this and, it seems, can - all of a sudden - produce edit features and a decent search system... even though they've been promising that they've had their tech people working on those things for ages?
And, of course, they surely haven't been looking for an excuse to bring about a charge to increase income for some time?

Strikes of profiteering and taking advantage of the weak and the poor when they're most in need.

Having said that, I'll probably do it (when I'm sure what it entails) because I can.
But I think less of them for it and would feel that, as a paying customer, I shouldn't have to put up with their pseudo-superior, lecturing tone in some of their posts. (Especially those closing down the HaM posts Smile)

LaMa

I was wondering if people who paid for a subscription would be less likely to be banned - or if they were, would they have their subscription refunded?

Grin Grin

DOUBLE YOLKER?

I'm not sure about this payment malarkey.

  1. why would I give my cc details to yet another provider?
  2. what would I miss if I didnt pay up? presuming I could still read and post on pleb threads as opposed to the top tier
  3. I've had threads deleted and a suspension for a very innocuous comment. What's the deal if that happens again? refund - for the month, or part thereof?
  4. If I pay, can I have input into whether another payer can post or not?
  5. where are the guidelines?
  6. where are the extra benefits for paying, or is it just out of the goodness of our hearts?
LaMarschallin · 09/04/2020 17:10

Gosh - you can tell I was peeved at MNHQ.
I forgot to even mention the double yolker!

Very, very EnvyEnvy

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 09/04/2020 17:14

Side note about double-yolked eggs: these tend to be laid by young layers whose systems haven't quite got the hang of it yet. So my girls, wot are all rescues, are very unlikely to produce any. Rescue chickens get rehomed at 12 months old when they can no longer be relied on to lay an egg per day, as per egg farm requirements. Also, for yer average hen, it takes 25 hours to produce and lay an egg. Which kind of means they are placing a lot of hen-responsibility on them in farms.

And on another note, I have just bounced the dog's tennis ball off the picket fence (of painting infamy) and it hit me on the boob. Very painful, and I will be examining for bruises later.

THE MUSTRESS MUSES

Many years ago Mr. Mhor and I were on holiday and had failed to get back to our holiday cottage in the middle of nowhere in time to catch the village shop.

We had a couple of slices of bread and an egg available with which to make merry at breakfast time.

(The village had a butcher's shop. Looking back, I see now that I have always had problems with butcher's shops. This one was in Scotland and enormous sums of money changed hands when one bought its produce. The opening hours were unclear. I realise that someone is going to ask me if this butcher sold circular square sausage but I actually cannot remember.)

Anyway.

Mr. Mhor (as ever) was on breakfast duty. He had asked me how I wanted my egg to be cooked. There was no question that I would get the egg, needless to say. Mr. Mhor is unfailingly civil in these matters and I may have bartered sex in exchange for the egg

"Fried", I said.

"And dippy. Got to be dippy."

I then heard Mr. Mhor chortle. It was a double-yolked egg.

Yay!

One egg each! Slightly less white than usual, but the yolk is our favourite bit.

Yum Yum.

And thank you, God.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 10/04/2020 17:15

Are we all thriving or just surviving?

Sunny but very windy here so it's cold. A friend in Brighton is complaining about the heat - I may have to kill her.

More bloody gardening... and the dog has developed a worrying obsession with bees. Willis cat found a slow worm while I was weeding - those fuckers are not slow, luckily, and in fact it got quite aggressive.

We are about to upset the whole of MN and have a bbq tonight. This seems fine to me due to howling gale, and the fact that neighbours appear to be having a disco (even the word dates me) in their garden.

Myimaginarypenguinhasnofleas · 10/04/2020 17:38

It's always Brighton. Whenever there's a fine spell and they want to show sunbathers on the tv - Brighton. I mean, it's a perfectly nice place but when there are so many beautiful wide sandy beaches around the UK, why pick a crowded pebbly one?

Hopefully warm weather is coming your way soon Yolo. Now that you mention BBQing I have a yen for some veg skewers with halloumi.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 11/04/2020 17:08

Checking in, hope all ok? Our (sandy) beach is pretty empty - although to be fair when I went up this afternoon it was high tide, so was a dog swim rather than a walk. She loves swimming, I quite like it too as means I just stand still and chuck a ball into the water for her and repeat over and over.

LaMarschallin · 11/04/2020 17:14

We're about as far from the coast as you can get in the UK.
However, it's warm enough to have the patio doors open. Hope Mr Lamar's Strawbs music isn't too loud 🙄

Almost warm enough to want to lie on an iceberg.
But there don't seem to be any round here...

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 12/04/2020 19:02

Our hostess has departed - quick everyone, get the sherry out from its hiding places and we can raise a glass before she comes back Grin

Next door but one's disco has now turned into some operatic thing, which is quite nice but expect we will be back to the bangin choons shortly. They have 3 little girls under 9, so would imagine they are desperate... Too cold now to have doors open anyway.

LaMarschallin · 13/04/2020 10:02

Happy Easter, cottage frequenters! 🥂
(Where do you think she's put the eggs? Both chocolate and the RB's...)

yolo, you're being jolly understanding about the disco but it's true, must be a nightmare with 3 under-9s.
The tragic thing for me would be that music suitable for 9s and under these days would seem the epitome of cutting edge modernity to me, I suspect Blush.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 14/04/2020 17:34

Have you fallen over under the bed yet LaM?

I've been elsewhere lately. Interesting (well for me anyway).

Sunny here but still blowing a bloody gale and freezing cold. Managed some extreme gardening.

DD2 is 21 today... what a strange day for her!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 14/04/2020 20:25

Hello Cottage guests.

I too have been Elsewhere.

I've been trying to stay off the H&M freds today, feeling irritable for no reason and liable to say something that might get me into trouble. I spent a calming couple of hours with my jigsaw instead.

Hope your DD isn't too disappointed today Yolo, is this the same DD who was doing the chalet girl thing? I bet she had an entirely different celebration in mind a few weeks ago!

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 14/04/2020 20:33

nah fleas it's the younger one. The one who started WFH 2 weeks before lockdown, got made redundant a week later... She's had an ok day, her BF came down with his bike and they went for a ride together (her birthday bike!). We seem to have given up on isolation, and the 2m rule was def not observed! oh well, she's only 21 once etc etc, and the 4 of us have survived 4 weeks together, so fuck it.

She has polished off a fair amount of rose (cant do accent) and DH made her a beautiful cake. We also had fish n chips for lunch from the takeaway in the village.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 14/04/2020 21:30

Sounds like a pretty good birthday to me, all things considered. Cake and rose, luxury!

I realised today we were missing treats, so when we do our shop next Monday I will be sure to put some in the trolley.

Was talking to DD earlier, both she and her brother live alone atm, and it struck me how vulnerable they would be if they got ill. All my instincts would be to collect my chicks and bring them home, but she pointed out that several hours in a car with a sick patient would pretty much guarantee us catching it and we are more at risk than them.

I've been pretty good at abiding by the rules but leaving my kids to fend for themselves would test my limits I'm afraid.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 19/04/2020 07:56

How is everyone doing this Sunday morning?

More importantly, what are you all having for tea? It's looking like leftovers for us (stewing lamb)

Cloudy where I am. Am thinking about whether I'll make the hour exercise!

CleansUpPenguinPoo · 19/04/2020 10:52

Morning Catherine, and all, it's lovely and sunny here, and as we finally got a Sainsburys delivery - oh the joy - it will be roast chicken, roast maris piper tatties, steamed broccoli and carrots. Cooked by DH so even better!

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 19/04/2020 13:43

Lovely CleansUpPenguinPoo How on EARTH did you get a Sainsburys delivery?! I have tried in vain. Newly signed up for absolutely no reason at all. Well I suppose I could stay up till midnight to grab one but I never do. Have to send the DS's shopping for some veg tomorrow.

Maris pipers sound lovely, I was drowning in potatoes a few weeks ago, now I'm on the last ones which are a bit soft from being at the bottom of the bag. Never thought I'd get through them all but have literally had them in every form possible, boiled, baked, jacketed, mashed and stewedGrin

And your DH cooking! Sunday providence indeed!Smile

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 19/04/2020 13:54

Thanks to MN I now know that grated broccoli stems make a lovely salad.

7Worfs · 19/04/2020 13:59

Speaking of potatoes, I made hash browns yesterday. Added my own twist - feta cheese.
Pleased with results.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 19/04/2020 14:07

Grated broccoli stems and lovely salad are an abuse of the English language surely?

Oh I love hash browns 7worfs and adding cheese is sheer genius. Did you grate it with the potatoes before frying?

7Worfs · 19/04/2020 14:14

I did the following: grated and drained the potatoes, mixed with whisked eggs, then finely crumbled the feta (grating might be better). Then rolled each patty into flour before frying.

Some people grate onion in there too, but I’m not a fan.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 19/04/2020 16:15

They sound scrumptious!

I love onions in my hash browns though but enjoy them without as well.

I have found myself paradoxically eating better than I did before lockdown. I think it's boredom. DS have made cheese cake and cinnamon rolls, I made shortbread which turned out a disaster and I have been eating out of boredom!
