LaM, steady as you go, fgs someone put a pillow under her head til she sleeps it off? Grin

Cindersindoors · 16/03/2020 16:03

Wish I could sleep for the next thirty days

Peers out at garden normal

Peers at street empty

Heads off to find chocolates

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 16/03/2020 16:20

I am applying two main forms of therapy at the moment.

  1. red Wine which is perfectly normal for me
  2. fresh air, also perfectly normal, but I am opening every window every time I can as I believe germs may thrive less. Totally unscientific, but you know...

These are horrible times, I wish we just had some kind lead from our govt apart from keep calm and carry on which seems to contradict whatever any other country anywhere is doing. We are British, we are Special seems to be the message.

Did some more painting (fence, not art), took dog for a swim (her, not me, I am not completely stupid).

May you all thrive and find constructive distractions.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 16/03/2020 17:14

I think Wineis the way forward yolo. Hope DD is finding her way home OK.

I've been applying my very bored mind to where I might like to self-isolate, money no object.

At the risk of cross contaminating threads I was thinking that if one had to be stranded and self isolated anywhere, there are worse places to be than on Vancouver Island in a luxury mansion.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 16/03/2020 18:11

fleas she's booked on a flight from Geneva on Weds, fuck knows what happens then but we'll deal with it when she gets home.

Personally, if I was a Russian oligarch I might choose to visit my mansion on a breezy island - but then sitting tenants? Would they share??

7Penguins · 16/03/2020 19:41

I’d also love to self-isolate in luxury, in a remote and picturesque part of the world, with staff at hand.
Though I’m sure some could find a reason to complain in that scenario as well.

I emailed my future line manager about the corona contingency plans, and asked to collect/ be sent my laptop and phone ASAP, as it looks like there will be a lockdown soon.

Tbh I’m looking forward to phasing back into work with WFH - hoping for that lockdown. 🤫

PenguinOrHippo · 16/03/2020 21:39

Evening everyone... In bed with BigGirlHippo (11) who has an occasional cough and a low temperature (37.4). If the cough becomes more frequent or the temperature raises to 37.7, we will be isolating for 12 days. Luckily I stocked up on some extra tonic today.

Mr Hippo still takes everything beyond lightly. He has been all for following government advice (lightest in Europe) until it tightened up this evening.... when he went to the pub straight after the PM’s announcement about avoiding pubs... 🙄

Think I am off downstairs for some Wine. Calpol has kicked in, so BigGirlHippo is less miserable...

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 16/03/2020 21:48

penguinorhippo just hugest hugs that the calpol/wine kicks in asap and you get some kip. Even being 11 does not stop you needing your mummy when you are poorly.

PenguinOrHippo · 16/03/2020 22:31

Thank you yolo. She is usually the toughest of the tough... this is a bad bug whatever it is. Hope your DD is still ok?

Watching some old Miami Vice with Mr Hippo. Halfway down my Wine, life is looking up.

7Penguins · 16/03/2020 22:42

Hippo hope your girl feels better tomorrow.

After the new gov advice got released this afternoon it suddenly became more real to me.

Slightly worried about the shortages now - we only have one opened pack of paracetamol in the house, about 5-6 doses if needed, so fingers crossed we don’t!

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 17/03/2020 08:56

Just received notification of changes to my first online shop. Most of the things I wanted are apparently unavailable.

That's it, I'm coming out of self-isolation. If you want something doing, do it yourself...

7Penguins · 17/03/2020 09:28

I hope you find food, Mischief. Shops here are empty.
We have fresh food for a few more days, after that it’s rice and beans.

LaMarschallin · 17/03/2020 09:44

It's a bugger, isn't it.

Quite enjoyed my alcoholic stupor little nap in front of the wood-burner, because waking up to grim reality is less fun.

Both Mr LaMa and self are in risky groups but on the very margins, iyswim. Eg Mr LaMa is early 60s* but is overweight and has hypertension. Albeit, well-controlled hypertension.

So far, we could survive for a couple of weeks purely on what we have in, due to his habit of stockpiling tinned tomatoes and ready-cook rice, and my habit of being very mean and never throwing away leftovers and always taking advantage of multibuy offers.

I know we're comparatively lucky.

Really wish I could help some of the residents of our cosy FrogMohr Cottage thread. In lieu of that, I have signed up to a local church group to try to make sure isolated local people get shopping and some social contact (even if just by phone).

Slightly worried about offending a neighbour - who I know is over 70, quite isolated and whose family live abroad - with an offer of help.
Still wondering how to tactfully word that without saying, "Well, I couldn't help but notice that you look old..."!

*I was a child bride, obviously.. hem hem

(I'm early 50s but with a minor problem which earns me a free flu jab but has no bearing on CV)

CleansUpPenguinPoo · 17/03/2020 11:25

Just received notification of changes to my first online shop. Most of the things I wanted are apparently unavailable.

No delivery slots available for Sainsburys, Tesco and Morrisons for the next three weeks! DH has terminal COPD plus heart condition and is self-isolating so I got up early and was outside Sbys when they opened at 630 this morning. No loo roll, tissues, paracetamol, pasta cat biscuits or or cat litter, only expensive cat food. Got a 2 pack of kitchen roll and some fruit & veg then went to Morrisons ready for their 7am opening. No loo roll, pasta or paracetamol and the only cat litter was the £8 small bag type. Got 2 boxes of tissues and a 6 pack of cat tins, went home, put stuff away then went to Lidl ready for their 8am opening. No loo roll, pasta, tissues or paracetamol, only expensive Iams cat biscuits but plenty of cat pouches and cheap cat litter so bought 6 bags cat litter and 3 boxes of cat pouches for them, salmon for us, bread, milk and 3 tins of chopped tomato. Went home and put everything away then nipped to corner shop for newspaper and chocolate - more to keep him going really than anything else, although by now I thought I deserved the chocolate for breakfast, having been up since 530am.

And behold - on his shelves, plenty of Andrex and cheaper loo rolls so bought 3 x 4-packs! Also paracetamol - not cheap, but not outrageous either so bought a box of 16. Moral of the story - support your local shop, and leave the crowds baying outside the big supermarkets to their hysteria. DH still sleeping, he needs his rest, so now the house is stocked, I might just have a G&T with my lunch.

Phew! Hope your day is equally successful - and features chocolate and or gin too!

PenguinOrHippo · 17/03/2020 11:31

Mischief , please be careful. If you haven’t got the virus, chances are you will pick it up. I think it really is quite awful, far worse that we think.

BigGirlHippo is now (since 30min) meeting the government criteria for self-isolation of the entire family. I started to feel really wiped out about an hour ago, it came very suddenly and without warning (I had a lovely walk this morning). We are currently in bed next to each other with LittleBoyHippo in charge of LittleHippo downstairs. Luckily I have a large bag of soup, canned fruit and instant noodles in addition to bread and fruit, so he will be able to feed her if I get worse.
And they have access to my Netflix account.

Mr Hippo will be sleeping elsewhere for a while 😳. Really hope this is just a random bug....

CleansUpPenguinPoo · 17/03/2020 11:37

Hippo, you be careful too please.. sending hugs, I thought this was all being blown up but now it is starting to get really serious.

PenguinOrHippo · 17/03/2020 11:49

Thank you CleansUp , I think we have a few unpleasant weeks ahead... so happy you got your paracetamol and loo roll. The world has gone mad!!

LaMa , I think your neighbour will be happy, I cannot imagine anyone in these times being offended by kindness. Stay safe!

MhorOrLessTheMustress · 17/03/2020 11:50

I will be very careful, promise. DH will remain in the car on account of his hearteries as DD calls them.

DS1 scoffed when I said the supermarket shelves were bare and told me I didn't do enough shopping at garages.Grin

Looks like he was right after all...

OP posts:
Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 17/03/2020 11:51

Who said that....Blush

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 17/03/2020 11:54

It's all so scary, and also surreal. It's a beautiful day outside, and yet all anyone can talk about is that we are all doomed.
Trying to work out if DD1 has to self-isolate tomorrow, and if because I've picked her up from the airport I will have to as well. This aint going to work...

7Penguins · 17/03/2020 13:43

I hope we all start moving up the survive-thrive scale (patent pending) very soon, sending positive thoughts to you all! Cake

Mischief’s NC malfunction gave me a much needed chuckle.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 17/03/2020 16:07

Hope everyone is thriving, those unwell are feeling better, and those who have stayed well continue to so so.

Just did a supermarket visit - O.M.G.

Rationing next, you mark my words....

Ilovellamasandpenguins · 17/03/2020 17:58

Evening - hope everyone is OK.

Hippo - hope your daughter is getting better and isolation is going OK.

Yolo - hope your daughter arrives safely and that you navigate the airport OK.

It is interesting, but worrying times. I don’t like uncertainty and the immediate future looks full of it.

Stay safe and well all of you lovely ladies.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 17/03/2020 20:32

I'm really baffled about where all the goods have gone. I can understand the tinned tomatoes, as they all come from Italy. But why is there no porridge, cereal, frozen veg, fresh fruit and veg? How much storage space do people actually have?

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 17/03/2020 21:01

The shopping thing is weird... I can only assume people are preparing for total lockdown, even though if we had that at least one person per household would be allowed out to shop (going by other countries).

I ordered dog food from Amazon a couple of weeks ago - no longer available. Bought her cheap stuff in the interim with disastrous effect - need to get dog and cat food from another supplier!

Our village FB is trying to organise some kind of local assistance, which ordinarily I'd do - but not knowing whether we have to isolate or not makes me hold back.

hippo how is your DD? I hope she's feeling better.
