Cling on to surviving OV, not sure many of us will thrive in the coming weeks Wine

PenguinOrHippo · 20/03/2020 21:30

Evening everyone,

It seems to be only surviving all around.

We had a bad turn yesterday. BigGirlHippo got so much worse and started to have a high temp, cough and felt so bad. Mr Hippo kept asking if I wanted him to take her away (due to my heart condition), but I ended up sleeping next to her. She had a bad night, but slightly better today. LittleBoyHippo has been under the weather as well, hoping he isn’t coming down with it.

I am so happy Mr Hippo got the gin in the end. (Grappa still unopened). I had two G&T and life looks slightly better. Just worried about what would happen if I came down with it. Still at loss how to keep the children entertained inside for another 9-10 days. And feeling unsettled Sad.

Sorry, that was a big “me, me, me post”.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 20/03/2020 21:35

penguinorhippo that sounds hard, thank god for Gin. I recommend netflix, the ipad, all electronic shit that keeps them quiet and resting while getting better, and equals rest for you.

PenguinOrHippo · 20/03/2020 21:49

Thank you yolo. Gin is good. I have promised all little hippos to watch whatever tomorrow morning as long as Mr Hippo and I can sleep. I was woken every other hour by very sick BigGirlHippo last night Sad.

On the plus side, Little Hippo and I made a really nice slow cooked (7h) leg of lamb for dinner. With some lovely roast potatoes. And it seems our local wine store is doing deliveries even though the store is shut. We will get through this!!!!

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 20/03/2020 22:15

So sorry so many are ill. MustressFlowers
Hope headache improves. Hippo Flowers hope bog girl jippo is fully on the way to the mend!!

Is no one thriving? Yolo congrats on DDs return home!!Star

Definately not thriving here either. My thyroid medication is rubbish and I stupidly tried to wean myself of it resulting in me causing some very bad side effects. Now forced to take it and keep swinging between restless energy and feeling like death. Brain is scatty - alternately racing then being so foggy I need mental windscreen wipers.

Nearly killed myself going supermarket past couple of days. Utterly ridiculous! Today M&S looked like a posh version of Fight Club! I left the house at 8ish and returned without essentials after 12!!! It appears no shop in Britain has flour or pasta. And I mean flour of any variety including gluten free.

Yesterday was diabolical. Sainsburys had a limit, but almost every shelf was empty. As for eggs: yesterday I did think of your hens Yolo and declared out loud that it would be easier to acquire an actual hen than to purchase the eggs. The lady in front of me lol. But I suspect it was a truth.

I'm now in full isolation but my sister is a nurse and has just rang me for a mental pep talk cause she's in tomorrow. Frontline London hospital. What could I say? I told her to split herself in half and mentally forget about us and her children the 2nd she steps inside the hospital and that she is helping her country and there's loads of support and good feeling towards all NHS workers. I am really worried for her though and feel a bit sick about it. I think many of her colleagues including her, are recognising what a vocation it really is.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 20/03/2020 22:16

Big girl hippo. My fingers are so fat!!!Angry

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 20/03/2020 22:18

Second. Not 2nd. Brain really is dead

7Penguins · 20/03/2020 23:26

We will get through this.
When I’m faced with difficult times, I say to myself ‘Courage’ with a French accent. No idea where I’ve picked it up, but it helps me. Blush
I’m thinking of you all!

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 21/03/2020 12:29

Sorry I know it's serious but the thought of walking around saying 'courage' in french makes me laigh (in a good way)Smile

So many words sound lovely and more refined in french!

I think this too shall pass. I hope everyone is ok/on the mend todayFlowers

PenguinOrHippo · 21/03/2020 13:02

Good morning everyone,

Catherine, so sorry you are feeling so rubbish. And the supermarket sounds horrible!! I am dreading going out there when isolation ends.

BigGirlHippo is a bit better. Temperature is down luckily, but she still has an awful headache, spent most of yesterday in bed and looks like today will be the same. I have turned into some weird hypochondriac, feeling for the slightest ache and chasing the little hippos with the thermometer...

How are everyone else?

7Penguins · 21/03/2020 13:28

Great news about the temp, Hippo Smile From what I read the recuperation after the fever can take up to a week, so PJ days and breakfasts in bed for BigGirlHippo.

I’m on the absolute edge with baby’s feed to sleep association, just trying to break it now and it’s a horror show.

Sainsbury’s delivered most things except for eggs, mince and a few inconsequential items.
I’m rationing the last of our eggs, instead of omelettes for lunches I use one egg for French toast.

Who and how hoards milk and eggs, and why! The U.K. has cows and hens that keep doing their thing, why would you stockpile THAT. 🤦🏻‍♀️

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 21/03/2020 13:29

Hippo so glad BigGirlHippo is improving! Well of course you are anxiously checking your health. I am too! I have a sore throat this morning and cannot work out if it just another thyroid nuisance or something else am reminding myself that CV is unlikely and even then not necessarily a cause for panic. Keep thinking about stats for self reassurance

With regards to supermarket, I regret my post as it's somewhat alarmist and though that was the situation where I am, the situation may well be much better for you, especially by the time your self isolation ends and even then it seems to vary hugely by area. Personally I'm praying it calms down after this weekend! x

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 21/03/2020 13:37

7Penguins I think the extra demand for eggs is about baking as where I am flour is nigh on impossible to get. So I am assuming many people intend to bake, make dough, pastry or fry chicken whilst in self isolation. Otherwise I have no idea.

PenguinOrHippo · 21/03/2020 13:48

Thank you both! It is reassuring that she improved and great to know that a slow recovery is normal. 7 , sorry it is hard on you. I have no advice sadly, just Flowers. My oldest was very put together, learn to get to sleep, my youngest always fell asleep on me. Now they are both great sleepers. LittleBoyHippo, not so much.

No worries at all Catherine, I think it will improve in a week. It must be some limit to the amount of things people can store?!? I think there are many out there who are like Mr Hippo, thinking the pub is a good idea until they closed (or were told not to come back until after 14 days if they went) and no idea why you would keep the cupboards stocked until two days ago. I think the Mr Hippos of this world are realising that this is quite serious.

WaddiMiss · 21/03/2020 17:22

Hello everyone!

Just pooping to see how everyone is.
*
Hippo* i hope you a family hippo are ok!

Hubby and i have been cleaning the house today its never be so clean!!
And im on top of my washing!! Shame it took social distancing to get stuff done!!

Take care and stay safe ladies!

WaddiMiss · 21/03/2020 17:23

Ooops bold fail!

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 21/03/2020 21:42

catherine I'm so pleased to see you, have missed you!

Our esteemed hostess should be back soon, we should think about cleaning the place a bit I guess and restocking the sherry...

It has been blowing a bloody hoolie here all day, and really howling again tonight. So wearing.

Chez yolo seems to be absolutely crap at social distancing, let alone isolation. OTH, we've had the most rubbish 2 years ever, and I think we are all quite fatalistic now that we are all under the same roof for a bit, even if enforced.

On that cheery note (!) sleep tight one and all, I hope tomorrow brings us all better weather and better health. Wine

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 22/03/2020 08:50

Happy Mothering Sunday to all.

Hoping everyone gets to celebrate somehow, even if poorly.

Reasons to be cheerful:
We have a huge magnolia tree which is in full bloom now. I have a lovely view of it from my bedroom window. It's a beautiful sight especially on a sunny day.

Think I might spend some time in the garden today, just tidying up a bit. If I won the lottery a garden makeover would be very high on my list.

CleansUpPenguinPoo · 22/03/2020 09:41

Morning all, happy Sunday to you, mothers or not. I can see my neighbour's magnolia tree, am enjoying not having to clean up the many petals it's already shed.

APenquinIsCuttingthegrass · 22/03/2020 09:44

Yes the flowering trees are really beautiful just now.

Got washing dried on the line. It smells soooooo amazing.

Yes to the house being so tidy and de cluttered to easily maintain and clean. To the point DP asked where the tape measure was... after looking on the window sill, in the fruit bowl, on the sideboard and I suggested the tool bag which is where it was... last place we thought of Blush

APenquinIsCuttingthegrass · 22/03/2020 09:46

Flowers and Wine and sherry (of course) to all who are suffering, looking after people or self isolating.

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 22/03/2020 10:13

Neighbour has informed me that the charity from whom he gets his rescue chickens is not accepting new rehoming requests as they think people are "adopting" them for a cheap meal.

We have several apple trees including a heavy cropping Bramley. I'm wondering if this goes on into autumn whether I'll need security...

I'm afraid the current situation is bringing out the worst as well as the best in people.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 22/03/2020 11:03

Big hugs Yolo!! Missed you too! Hope weather is better this morning. Bright and airy here! At least you're all safe together x

Aaah to all the pretty blossoming trees. How lucky to have them! I have an ash and an Elderberry. Neither with full leaf spread at the mo. The ash is pretty when leaves out and the elderberry attracts wood pigeons. There's a cordial and a pie you can make from the berries but I'd have to pick loads and half of it hangs over next doors (tree exterminators. Cut down to the ground a beautiful huge lime and another Ash and cut a whole limb off my Elderberry without a heads upAngry) so I'd have to ask permission to go round and collect. Rather rude tree to not grow in it's own garden!!

Yes these are the small blessing to count in times like these.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 22/03/2020 11:09

Start hunting for good security right now imaginary My mum's next door neighbour has an apple tree and he just lets them fall and rot. Every year my mum literally walks through the gap in the fence and takes them at her leisure. She and the 2 neighbours immediately to her left and his neighbour on the right. I get some for pies.

I can imagine the scrabble this year. I think it likely he'll want to hold onto them for himself.

This makes me wish more than ever than I had a self sufficient lifestyle. A small freeholding with a walk in larder and cold room a some chickens, a few goats a pig a large vegetable patch, canning supplies.....

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 22/03/2020 11:40

I'm ashamed to say a lot of our apples fall before we can get to them. I've invited the neighbours to help themselves whenever they like but I think they prefer to do it when I'm not looking!
