And if not what decade was this?

I was at primary school in the 1980s and there was no uniform at all.

All schools seem to have uniforms now and I was wondering if my school was unusual in the 1980s or if it was more common to not have uniforms then.

Yes. Primary school in late 70s and early 80s and very strict uniforms in all three schools I went to. They were Catholic schools if that makes a difference.

Rockbird · 07/12/2019 18:34

All three schools up to a levels I mean!

elephantoverthehill · 07/12/2019 18:36

I went to primary school in the 70s. There was a school uniform but it was optional so I never wore it.

AlunWynsKnee · 07/12/2019 18:37

I went to three different primary schools in the 70s. Only one had a uniform.

Orchidflower1 · 07/12/2019 18:37

We never had a uniform for day to day wear but had a PE uniform strangely!

OneUsernameOnly · 07/12/2019 18:37

Yes. Primary school in the 80’s. Uniform wasn’t compulsory but every child wore the uniform of tie and jumper. Just an average village school.

gerbo · 07/12/2019 18:37

Yes, early early 80s primary. Smart uniform with real tie and shoe laces. We had to be able to do these independently before reception-!!!- I remember Dad patiently teaching me both....
Standard state primary in Lancashire.

ysmaem · 07/12/2019 18:38

90s and there was an uniform and even though it was optional both me and my sister did wear the uniform.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/12/2019 18:38

Bog standard school in the 70s and 80s and yes.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/12/2019 18:39

No, 80's.

Quinceandmedlarsrule · 07/12/2019 18:40

Primary school from late sixties - uniform worn by pretty much everyone but mainly just grey and white, and checked gingham summer dresses. Grammar school in 1970's - very rigid even to measuring length of skirt, and length of worsted wool PE skirt...

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/12/2019 18:41

90s- we had uniform. A lot less strict than my kids one though. My brother would have started in 1989

Secondary school was a very precise uniform sold in one shop.

Lipperfromchipper · 07/12/2019 18:41

Yes for primary in 90’s...no for secondary in the early 00’s (it was private so no uniform and called teachers by first name!!) best school ever!! 🤣🤣

SunnySomer · 07/12/2019 18:41

Two different state primaries, 1970s, uniform with tie for both.
My cousins didn’t at their school though.

MoobaaMoobaa · 07/12/2019 18:41

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/12/2019 18:42

reginafelangee · 07/12/2019 18:42

I as at primary 1979 to 1986 and yes full uniform including blazer and leather satchel.

RollOnNextYear · 07/12/2019 18:43

Early 90s. They Introduced it in the final year. So us year 6s didn't have to as they said it wasn't worth it for one year.

sodabreadjam · 07/12/2019 18:43

Yes - 1960s. Vest, pants (navy for gym) blouse, school tie, pinafore, cardigan, blazer with badge, Burberry style raincoat, beret with badge, schools socks and black or brown shoes. Striped school dress in the summer.

NerrSnerr · 07/12/2019 18:44

I started school in 1986 and in infants we had a non compulsory uniform (school photos have some cracking jumpers and shell suits in them!). In juniors we did but it was very informal, Greg trousers, white polo or shirt and grey jumper. I think I wore a brown tie with it one year too?!?

thewooster · 07/12/2019 18:47

Yes, primary school in 70s and secondary school in the 80s. Secondary school was very strict on uniform.

Miljea · 07/12/2019 18:47

My first ever school, St John's, Danbury, in 1967 had an uniform you'd associate with private, today; grey blazer with purple edge piping, beret, purple and yellow tie!

Second school, Romsey Juniors, had a uniform all but no one wore (1 term); final was a Wiltshire village primary with no uniform whatsoever.

We loved the formality of our grammar school uniforms that followed!

@Lipperfromchipper - Bedales??

missnevermind · 07/12/2019 18:47
