Did you wear school uniform at primary school.

And if not what decade was this?

I was at primary school in the 1980s and there was no uniform at all.

All schools seem to have uniforms now and I was wondering if my school was unusual in the 1980s or if it was more common to not have uniforms then.

Small village primary in the late 60s/early 70s we didn't have any uniform but then moved to a city primary with full uniform, blazer, tie. It took me ages to get the tie right!

Oldraver · 07/12/2019 21:24

I was at Primary until 1976 then secondary till 1981

Never wore uniform at either, do kids in uniform seems odd to me

MAFIL · 07/12/2019 21:26

State primary in the 70s. Strict uniform with formal shirt and tie. And no clip on or elastic ties either, we had to learn to tie a windsor knot. Same in secondary school in the late 70s/ early 80s. No uniform for 6th form though.

I went to three primaries (two state one private) during the 1980s and they all had uniform. Pretty sure the great majority of schools in the UK did?

june2007 · 07/12/2019 21:31

I went to two enfants, 1 juniour and 1 high and yes i wore uniform at them all. (variouse strictness.) And all the schools in town where i spent most my schooling wore uniform too. (80-90s)

Shenanagins · 07/12/2019 21:32

No, never wore one at my state schools and neither of them have one now.

HairyFloppins · 07/12/2019 21:32

My first primary in 1987 we didn't in North Kent. We then moved down to East Kent and we had to wear uniform, shirts and proper ties.

WhatsNextMrsLandingham · 07/12/2019 21:33

Yes. Late 80s, uniform was sky blue shirt, tie, grey skirt and navy blazer and blue and white gingham dress in summer. The same uniform is still worn at the school, though now they have navy hoodies instead of blazers. They look odd with a shirt and tie.

Nonnymum · 07/12/2019 21:36

There was no uniform in the 60s when I was at primary school. And none in the 90s when my children were at primary school. Now all the schools have them. I can't say I like it

Lulu1919 · 07/12/2019 21:38

Mid '70s no
By 1980 yes and from then on

lifeisgoodagain · 07/12/2019 21:40

Yes 70's/80's

MzPumpkinPie · 07/12/2019 21:41

No. Went to school in Bedfordshire near our usaf military base from 1980 to 1994 and no uniform at all in that time.
At the middle school I attended we called all of the teachers by their first names too.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/12/2019 21:44

I wore a tie every school day from age 4 until sixth form. DD had to wear a tie from age 4 until secondary school which had dropped ties for girls just a couple of years before she went.

MrsFezziwig · 07/12/2019 21:48

State schools - primary late 50s early 60s - we had uniform (I have the cute photos to prove it!) - don’t know if it was compulsory as it wasn’t a well off area, but my mum made sure we had the uniform.
Grammar school in the 60s in the same area - quite a strict uniform and no exceptions. All the schools I knew of in the area had uniform.

lumpy76 · 07/12/2019 21:49

Primary school from 1980 - 87 uniform at my midlands infant & junior school. No uniform at my Yorkshire Primary. Uniform for secondary (state comp) but not that strict.
@stupiddriver1 my nephews in north London don't have uniform at their state primary.

GlowWine · 07/12/2019 21:50

One of our local state primaries here in Cambridge is uniform free.

I went to school in Germany in the 70s80s, school uniform is generally unheard of.

User67836 · 07/12/2019 21:50

I’ve never wore a uniform, State educated in London. i’m in my mid 30’s

Stupiddriver1 · 07/12/2019 21:52

Have to say I was glad when dd went to school it was polo shirt and skirt/trousers. Didn’t get any clothes ruined, didn’t have to think about what she was wearing, no melt downs over what she was wearing.

I went to primary school in the 70's and secondary school in the 80's. Uniform was mandatory at both. I wore a real tie from the age of four!

GoGoLego · 07/12/2019 21:55

Primary in the 90s didn't have a uniform. It had a school jumper and you could wear it if you wanted but pretty much anything went. My mum insisted I wore the grey skirt and white polo etc but many didn't. The school was very much the exception in that regard though

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 07/12/2019 21:55

Yes, with blazer and tie. This was a Catholic primary in the eighties.

homemadecommunistrussia · 07/12/2019 21:56

No uniform in the 70s for me.

CaveMum · 07/12/2019 21:57

Primary school in the 80s - did have a uniform (burgundy jumper and grey skirt/trousers) but it was optional. My mum forced me to wear it every Monday!

Secondary school in the 90s - uniform (black and white) but as it was in a very deprived area they really didn’t care what you wore as long as it was black or white. The school shut down in the late 90s and ended up being the set for the excellent Channel 4 series “Teachers”

Notso · 07/12/2019 22:04

My first primary had a navy uniform. Not everyone wore it but I did, proper shirt and tie etc.
We moved when I was 9 to a school with bottle green and grey again not everyone wore it. We moved mid term and my Mum made me wear the navy uniform from my old school until I'd grown out of it.
Have never forgiven her.

happypotamus · 07/12/2019 22:11

Went to 2 primary schools in the 80s, both had uniforms, not blazers etc but white shirts/ grey skirts or pinafores/ red in one school blue in the other jumpers or cardigans. But DH went to a different primary school at about the same time and didn't wear a uniform.
