Did you wear school uniform at primary school.

And if not what decade was this?

I was at primary school in the 1980s and there was no uniform at all.

All schools seem to have uniforms now and I was wondering if my school was unusual in the 1980s or if it was more common to not have uniforms then.

I went to a C of E primary school in the 80s. We had a uniform of shirt, tie and jumper but we could pretty much wear any colour shirt/trouser/skirt/shirt/jumper we wanted. Our school class photos were very colourful, and I have a school photo somewhere of my sibling and I wearing different coloured shirts. I thought this was a really unusual thing, but when when I started looking at secondary schools for my eldest recently the grammar schools still offer a choice of colour for jumpers and trousers.

We did, including tie, and they were strict about it. No trousers for girls! If you transferred in mid-year you were an exception and could wear your previous school's uniform until you wore out or outgrew it. We also had a traveller family who attended for 6 weeks every springtime and they just had to dress smartly. We had regular jumble sales in school and there was always a uniform table so you could get a bargain on second hand - no stigma because you were 'helping the school'. Village state school in the north of England.

Fuzzyspringroll · 08/12/2019 09:52

Nope. Went to school abroad, so not a "thing" at all. DS is most likely also going to go to school there and won't wear one (depending on which school he's going to attend).

Oh yes, we had ties too.

Son stopped full uniform and had suit in sixth form, I remember buying him quite a nice one in somewhere called Haynes I think, in central London as I worked near there, but he still had to wear white shirt and school tie with it.

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 08/12/2019 09:59

80's yes, full uniform in state primary

marvellousnightforamooncup · 08/12/2019 10:05

70s and 80s. There was a uniform but only one or two kids wore it. Usually wearing the sweatshirt over their normal clothes.

yellowallpaper · 08/12/2019 10:15

None here. 80s

Thirtyrock39 · 08/12/2019 10:18

No uniform in primary school -1980s. They did ban Hawaiian shorts though I remember !!

ManonBlackbeak · 08/12/2019 10:21

I went to an infant school which had an optional uniform. Some wore it some didn’t, I did but it was very relaxed. Juniors had a compulsory uniform, but it was much more relaxed than now so as long as we wore the school colours it was fine. Tie was optional and many of us wore trainers to school.

This was in the 90’s.

Witchend · 08/12/2019 10:21

Yes. School in 80s.
All schools did in our area.

State ones would be white (or grey for the boys) shirt, school ties, a skirt/pinafore in the school colour for the girls and grey trousers for a boy, and a jumper/cardy in the school colours.
Girls could usually wear grey skirts/pinafore or grey jumpers but it tended to be very few-typically the council estate children because they went to 3 different schools with different colours so the uniform could be shared around more children. Looking back that was quite sad-most of us had second hand uniforms-don't think I ever had new except when dm knitted my cardy once, and the stuff was just as much passed round, but it did make them stand out.

I was very envious of the school up the road who had red while I was stuck with boring green. Grin

Private schools added a blazer to that.

Dowser · 08/12/2019 10:24

No, not in the 50s
Then wwe did in seniors..right up to the age of 18 where on Saturdays I was working in a betting shop 😂
You can’t imagine it these days.
Work on Saturdays where the betting shops were very male dominated, lots of alcohol fuelled punters, lots of swearing, smoking and then I go into school and get an order Mark later that week for being spotted not wearing my school ( ridiculous) hat

When two worlds collide.

WhoCaresWins01 · 08/12/2019 10:27

Started Primary school in 1972 - no uniform, none of the primary schools in that area had a uniform.

VenusClapTrap · 08/12/2019 10:30

No uniform at my Yorkshire state infants and juniors, late 70s, early 80s. Then I was moved to a private school aged 9 which had a strict uniform. I loved it - felt so smart.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 08/12/2019 10:30

Primary in 70s and yes, I wore a uniform

WellTidy · 08/12/2019 10:32

Yes. It was introduced when I was in the top junior class ie one year before we went to secondary school. Parents weren’t that impressed with having to buy primary school uniform that couldn’t have been worn again the next year at the secondary that each and every one of us went to (different uniform items).

It was the only year of my life that I’ve worn a tie - no tie (or blazer for that matter) at secondary.

JacobReesClunge · 08/12/2019 10:36

Yes, 80s and 90s, but some of the other local schools didn't.

Aycharow · 08/12/2019 10:39

Late 60's - early 70's and no uniform at my primary school.

homemadecommunistrussia · 08/12/2019 10:42

This is so weird I really hadn't realised I was so unusual.
I felt sorry for my dc having to wear uniform at primary and again all this business casual crap at 6th form.

Equimum · 08/12/2019 10:45

We had uniform at primary school (I strted in 1986) but it was more relaxed than many schools are now - any white shirt, and navy jumper/cardigan, any colour socks/tights, grey or navy skirts.

Although it cannot be enforced as such, the same school now expects everything to have logos, and skirts/ tights must be grey. There is also now a PE kit which there wasn’t at the time.

x2boys · 08/12/2019 10:45

Yes Catholic convent primary school from 1978-1985 very strict uniform ,grey skirt, white shirt grey jumper cardi, and tie for girls blazer ,and beret,s in the winter, summer was pink and white ,red and white gingham dresses ( for girls ) and blazer and boater hats, boys wore grey short trousers throughout the year, white shirts tie ,grey jumper blazer and cap,s this wasent a private school ,I do realise the uniform was somewhat unusual.

MissCharleyP · 08/12/2019 10:49

No, the HT wanted to introduce one at one point but he was always outvoted by the governors (one of whom was my dad).

RuthW · 08/12/2019 10:59

70s.

There was a very vague uniform (grey skirt) but not compulsory

FlurkenSchnit · 08/12/2019 11:00

I went to separate nursery/infant/junior schools in the 80s, infant school was only one with a uniform but it wasn't compulsory.

PumpkinP · 08/12/2019 14:12

We didn’t wear uniform when I was in primary school, and I left primary in 1999

Aragog · 08/12/2019 14:15

Yes, in late 70s and 80s. Left sixth form in 1991. For both middle school (y5-8) and secondary (y9-11) We also had sixth formers school uniforms too though for girls it was a little les strict with no tie. I'm not entirely sure about my first school (R-y4) as some pictures I seem to be in what looks like a uniforms and some hot.
