Did you wear school uniform at primary school.

And if not what decade was this?

I was at primary school in the 1980s and there was no uniform at all.

All schools seem to have uniforms now and I was wondering if my school was unusual in the 1980s or if it was more common to not have uniforms then.

No, I went to 2 French Lycees in the 1970s/80s, 1 US elementary school and 1 UK CoE Primary. None had uniforms. In the 4th year Juniors (Y6) the school introduced an optional school jumper.

Lipperfromchipper · 07/12/2019 18:51

@Miljea no not in uk.

BelfastSmile · 07/12/2019 18:51

I started primary school in 1982, and that was the first year they had a uniform. In the photos of me on my first day, I'm not wearing a tie, because they hadn't arrived in stock yet.

Uniform wasn't compulsory, but everyone wore it. It was brought in after a few years of people allowing their kids to get very competitive over clothes.

Primary school - late 60's early 70's - pinafore dress, blazer, shirt and tie. The boys wore short trousers - not shorts - all through the year.

Grammar school - very strict uniform, blazers made only by a particular firm in London, we even had to wear specific coloured underwear. My great aunt made my "underslips" which had to be navy blue.

I'm not sure whether there any restrictions on boys' underpants but we had to wear navy blue knickers.

bathorshower · 07/12/2019 18:54

Yes, though it was loose (mainly a colour) and some didn't wear it. 80's.

DD doesn't wear uniform though - LEA school in England; three of those we visited didn't have uniform, so it may well vary with area.

AnneElliott · 07/12/2019 18:56

Yes we had uniform in the 80s. But it was just grey, white and red. There wasn't a specific jumper or anything, and kids could wear anything in those colours.

The girls all wore the red checked dresses in the summer term though.

Pyjamaface · 07/12/2019 18:57

Proper shirt, tie and jumper for me in the 80's with winter and summer uniforms.

Same school is much more relaxed now, just polo shirts and trousers/skirts/shorts, optional jumpers

Natsku · 07/12/2019 18:58

Primary in the 90s had uniform but I didn't wear it - mum refused to buy uniform for primary school, said it was silly! There was a handful of other children who didn't wear uniform either but the vast majority did.

DramaAlpaca · 07/12/2019 18:58

Early 70s, no uniform. I felt very grown up wearing a school uniform for the first time when I went to secondary in 1975, a girls' grammar. I was very disappointed to find that they were phasing out the school's gingham summer dresses and that first years weren't allowed to wear them.

My DC had school uniform from the get go in their primaries both in the UK & Ireland.

Marmite27 · 07/12/2019 18:59

Yes, early 1980’s.

DamsonOnThisDress · 07/12/2019 19:00

I went in the 80s too. There was a uniform but it was optional.

Most didn't wear it. I think I might have in P1 but beyond that it marked you out as uncool. The few who did stood out.

Even though we were wearing very ugly, cheap polyester Dunnes Stores gear or crap from the market. And Gola trainers.

Odd that was considered better than the uniform.

ShristmasChopper · 07/12/2019 19:00

80s. No uniform at all.

megletthesecond · 07/12/2019 19:02

No. Slightly crap primary in the early 80's.

jackstini · 07/12/2019 19:02

No uniform in infants or juniors - state primary from 1977 to 1983

CMOTDibbler · 07/12/2019 19:03

Yes, uniform at junior school which I started in 1979.

Yellredder · 07/12/2019 19:03

Primary school in the seventies, school uniform including a tie.

RandomMess · 07/12/2019 19:04

Left primary early 80s there was a uniform hardly anyone ever wore it.

Troels · 07/12/2019 19:06

I went to primary in the 60's and 70's, no uniforms for us until high school.

GameSetMatch · 07/12/2019 19:09

Yes we had a uniform, so did my mum 65years ago it was based on a Liverpool council estate so not a posh school either.

Stupiddriver1 · 07/12/2019 19:11

Sounds like it was fairly common back then.

Can’t imagine any state primaries are still uniform free.

I went to 4 different primary schools and they all had a uniform. But it was very relaxed and no logoed stuff.

ofwarren · 07/12/2019 19:13

Mid to late 80s, Church of England School. No uniform. It was brought in the year after I left in 1990

gamerwidow · 07/12/2019 19:17

Early 80s and both primary schools I attended has uniforms. No tops with logos back then though. To be fair DDs school uniform can be bought in its entirety from the supermarket. You can buy stuff with the school logo if you want but it’s optional. They’re very flexible about the style of skirts/trousers etc as a long as they are grey.

ImportantWater · 07/12/2019 19:19

1980s in England. I am never sure how it worked, there was a school T-shirt (not a polo shirt) which was blue with the school logo on the front, to be worn with shorts or trousers or a skirt. Many girls wore gingham dresses in the summer and most wore blue checks but there were green and red checks worn as well. I remember wearing a white or blue shirt and a grey skirt in winter, there was also a school tie but I never wore that. I also remember some people not wearing uniform at all though. So goodness knows what on Earth the rules were. Were there no uniform rules but parents liked to send children in wearing some kind of “school clothes”? Or were we all supposed to be wearing uniform but nobody could be bothered to enforce it? No idea.

Instagrump · 07/12/2019 19:20

I went to primary in the 80's. Uniform was supposed to be worn. My mum however didn't care to spend money on DSis and I so we never had a full, proper uniform. She had money but preferred to spend on things she liked like her hobbies or pets. I hate looking back at our school photos, with DSis and I standing out like sore thumbs in random jumpers amongst a whole class of kids in nice neat matching uniforms.
My kids will always have a proper uniform whether it's school, football club or girl guides!
