Did you wear school uniform at primary school.

And if not what decade was this?

I was at primary school in the 1980s and there was no uniform at all.

All schools seem to have uniforms now and I was wondering if my school was unusual in the 1980s or if it was more common to not have uniforms then.

Yes, went to 2 over the 80s (moved house when I was in what is now year 3 so changed schools) - both had uniforms. First, grey skirt/pinafore, white shirt and green cardie, second grey skirt/pinafore, white shirt and red cardie. Boys wore a grey or green/red jumper and grey shorts, white shirt and a tie - which all the mums added elastic too.

All the other local schools had uniform as well, but most were white shirt and grey shorts/skirt/dress with jumpers and ties being the only variety, and branded/logoed jumpers were only for the posh private schools.

Yes, primary in the 1980's, with a tie.

My children are fascinated by the fact that not only did I have a tie, I had to actually tie it, rather than the clip ons they have. I am sure the blazers went before I started, though my eldest sister may have had one.

The school still has a tie for its uniform.

3x prep schools in 80's ... all strict uniform

Yes, the 70s, Catholic school, very smart with a blazer and tie. Summer was a blue gingham dress.

Emetophobe · 08/12/2019 00:14

80s primary - no particular uniform although a school sweatshirt was available. We all wore different combinations of own clothes, school type clothes with the school sweatshirt (e.g. grey trousers or skirt and white shirt) and own clothes with the school sweatshirt on top. It varies every day and nobody wore fully school clothes every day.

90s secondary school - very lax uniform (could get away with black jeans and a baggy white shirt) and the girls didn’t wear ties.

MirandaWest · 08/12/2019 00:15

Was at primary school in the 80s. There was a uniform and everyone wore it.

ActualHornist · 08/12/2019 00:16

80s and early 90s - yes we had a uniform. All the local schools did.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/12/2019 00:29

No uniform at infant school, they introduced one the year after I left. Junior school introduced one when I was in year 4 but it was optional.
My catholic secondary was very unusual at the time as we had blazers.

mathanxiety · 08/12/2019 01:21

Yes, convent school primary in Ireland, run by nuns. Started 1969, left 1977.

None of the National Schools wore uniform.

Wore uniform in (state) secondary. This wasn't unusual.

mathanxiety · 08/12/2019 01:23

My primary uniform involved a tie too, which my DCs are amazed at. I taught DS to tie a tie.

CountFosco · 08/12/2019 01:23

No, nor at secondary school. 70s/80s but neither school has a uniform now either.

OhTheRoses · 08/12/2019 01:35

1960s state primary 5 to 7 no. Prep 7-11 yes. My DC early 00's cofe primary was a more relaxed version of my prep. No hats, blazers, tweed coats Shock.

IndieTara · 08/12/2019 01:36

I left Primary in 1978 and there was no uniform

OhTheRoses · 08/12/2019 01:37

But they had ties.

Elbowedout · 08/12/2019 02:09

@GlowWine I stayed with a family in Germany for a while in the 80s and was intrigued by the lack of school uniform. I also went to scouts with my host and even they weren't wearing a uniform. I was told that the reason was that after WW2 people weren't comfortable with seeing children in uniform because of memories of the Hitler Youth. I have no idea if that is actually the reason, but it makes sense and the parents and grandparents in my host family certainly believed it to be the case. It would be interesting to know if it is true, and if so, whether history has influenced the wearing of uniform in other countries. Does anyone know?

CareOfPunts · 08/12/2019 02:17

Yes, 70s and 80s. State primary. Shirts were green and only available in one shop so it was expensive!

Pixxie7 · 08/12/2019 02:31

Yep 50s me, 80s daughters and 90s son all had uniforms.

Greyhound22 · 08/12/2019 02:39

School in 80's and yes strict uniform - even stricter in secondary. These were Catholic schools.

SE13Mummy · 08/12/2019 02:46

No uniform at my Bristol primary school in the 1980s.

No uniform at the state primary (and a number of other local state primaries) my DD is at here in SE London.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 08/12/2019 02:59

Yes in the late 80s/early 90s. I know neither of my parents did in 50s/60s. In London. Had a boyfriend from the Midlands who didn’t late 70s/early 80s but he’s the only person of my generation (or just a bit before) I’ve ever known who didn’t.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 08/12/2019 04:07

At primary in 80s. We had school jumper and grey skirt or trousers and gingham dress in summer. Much like kids wear today really.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 08/12/2019 04:11

No uniform in primary at all. My sister is 10 years younger, she had uniform in the 90s at primary.

PrettyPurpleFeather · 08/12/2019 04:19

Yes I wore uniform when I went to school in the 1980's and so did all my family and friends. We could wear our own clothes when I went to 6th form but uniform was brought in after I left. A smart uniform of white blose, black jacket and skirt/trousers was for the 6th formers. I thought it was a good idea because there was a bit of bullying over clothes. If you're wearing a uniform, nobody knows if you're from a rich or poor family.

Bluerussian · 08/12/2019 04:23

Yes I wore uniform from age 4 and that was in 1954! It was horrible too, especially the hats which were a sort of felt and looked like pancakes from above but they weren't flat, they were stiffened and had a sort of rim that rested on the head. To complete the effect there was a tassel in the middle of the crown. We had elastic which went under our chins to keep the hats on. In the summer we had straw hats.

My son started school before he was four and he always had uniform.

Most people did and still do from what I can see. The advantage of uniform is everyone is equal I suppose but I never liked wearing it. Especially hats and awful, heavy outdoor shoes.

wanderings · 08/12/2019 04:43

No uniform in state primary in 1980s. It was a shock to wear uniform in secondary.
