Did you wear school uniform at primary school.

And if not what decade was this?

I was at primary school in the 1980s and there was no uniform at all.

All schools seem to have uniforms now and I was wondering if my school was unusual in the 1980s or if it was more common to not have uniforms then.

Yes. State primary in the 1990s. They were pretty lax about it though, so long as you were wearing the four acceptable colours (black, white, grey and the school's 'official' colour).

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 07/12/2019 19:21

It was optional at my primary in the 80s.

FairfaxAikman · 07/12/2019 19:24

Early 90s, two different primary schools both with a "proper" uniform of tie and shirt.

Our local school now (where DS will go) has a uniform but it's just a jumper with the school logo over a coloured polo shirt.

No - state schools in USA don't have uniforms.

BarkandCheese · 07/12/2019 19:31

Yes, state primary through the 70s and 80s. It was fairly basic navy skirt/trousers and v neck (my grandma used to knit mine) and light blue shirt. In the summer we could wear blue and white or light blue dresses but there was no consensus on the pattern, I’ve gone an old school photo where each girl is pretty much wearing a different pattern.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 07/12/2019 19:34

No. I went to primary school in the 80s and mine was one of a couple in our large town not to have a uniform and was regarded as a bit weird!

EdithWeston · 07/12/2019 19:40

1960s and 70s

No uniform in infants.

Uniform in juniors (white shirt, school tie, navy cardie/jumper and skirt (girls) navy jumper, black trousers (boys))

Fruityb · 07/12/2019 19:41

There was at mine but it was very flexible. We all mostly wore it but some days people didn’t. I wore trainers every day. Also in the 80s. It certainly wasn’t enforced as long as you didn’t wear jeans I think.

froggers1 · 07/12/2019 19:42

There might have been one but no one wore it really..early 80s

Apple23 · 07/12/2019 19:48

No uniform at my primary in the 1970s.

By the late ‘90s, I was teaching. That primary school had a uniform sweatshirt that the children had to wear - some with a shirt and tie or polo shirt and school trousers/ skirt/ pinafore, whilst others just wore it over their ordinary clothes.

AdalindMeisner · 07/12/2019 19:48

Catholic primary in the 80's and we wore a uniform. Blue blouse, grey cardi/jumper/vest and grey skirt/pinafore (girls) or grey trousers/shorts (boys). Summer was a gingham dress for girls.

TimeforanotherChange · 07/12/2019 19:51

No. I was at primary school from 1971 to 1978 and there was no uniform.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/12/2019 19:51

Primary in the 70s - strict uniform. Secondary in the 80s - strict uniform, regulation skirt etc. Even in sixth form we had to wear uniform but not as strict, we could wear ANY plain white blouse and ANY plain grey knee length skirt with ANY plain black shoes and ANY plain grey cardigan or v neck jumper.

peanutfoldover · 07/12/2019 19:52

Primary 1985-1990 strict compulsory uniform, very small rural village school.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 07/12/2019 19:55

No. State primary school from 1968 to 1974.

Llareggub · 07/12/2019 19:55

Late 70s/early 80s: no uniform at all. Even the parents lobbied the HT for one but to no avail.

EL8888 · 07/12/2019 19:56

Yes. In the 80’s

Melfish · 07/12/2019 19:58

Both DH and I attended primary schools in different parts of London in the 1980s and neither of us wore uniforms. The local Catholic primary had a uniform, as did all the prep schools.
The secondary uniforms weren't always strict- a friend went to one of them and their uniform was a logo sweatshirt and black trousers/skirt.

ReginaGeorgeous · 07/12/2019 20:04

Yes, standard state primary from 1990-97. Much less strict than DD's school though.

marmiteandmarmalade · 07/12/2019 20:04

Uniform at my primary school in the eighties

Likethebattle · 07/12/2019 20:04

Started primary in 1984 and uniform was non compulsory and rarely worn.

Secondary had a uniform but it wasn’t strict, you had to have white shirt and tie but any sweater and coat was acceptable. Girls weren’t allowed trousers in my first year but we campaigned for it to be allowed. We were in West of Scotland so trousers were needed in the winter.

nancy75 · 07/12/2019 20:08

Started primary in 1980 & uniform was worn by all (bog standard school in deprived area of SE London so nothing posh!)

DappledThings · 07/12/2019 21:10

Went to 3 different ordinary primary schools all across the country (Kent, Cumbria, West Midlands) in the 80s. All had full uniform so ties, blazers etc.

NetballHoop · 07/12/2019 21:13

Four primary schools in four countries. The only one with a uniform was in England.

CoffeeRunner · 07/12/2019 21:13

I was at primary school from 1980 to 1986. No uniform. None of the local primaries had uniform.

Now (and since at least 2001 when DS1 started) they all have.
