Did you wear school uniform at primary school.

And if not what decade was this?

I was at primary school in the 1980s and there was no uniform at all.

All schools seem to have uniforms now and I was wondering if my school was unusual in the 1980s or if it was more common to not have uniforms then.

primary in 1970s
4 different primaries, 2 state and 2 private, only the private schools had uniform

I then taught in primaries in early 1990s and no uniform in any of them, nor in the feeder secondary.
But it was just coming in, some schools were starting to get school sweatshirts, and then the secondary introduced a uniform, and it spread.

No. I was in primary from 1971 to 1979. Pity really as my school photos wearing hideous matching dresses with my sister, handmade clothes and God awful jumpers were never put on show.

Notquiteagandt · 09/12/2019 10:27

Infants no. We could if wanted to. Compulsary for juniors.School photos look a very funny mix of half uniform half own clothes. We had a hat, tie, blazer, pinifore etc for uniform.

This was early 90s

87-94 no uniform. I think we were the only primary school in the area not to have a uniform though. This was is in West London.

I moved around a couple of times and so went to a few primaries both small village ones and a huge city infants school - all had uniforms - that was the 1980's
Mainly seemed to be checked summer dresses & grey pinafores or skirts with a white shirt and a knitted jumper (navy or red depending on the school) in winter.
When I first started I had all my clothes made for me as I was a doll sized (I'm not huge now but I was really really tiny then) and even though I didn't start school until I was 5, all uniform you could buy was massively too big. I still have a pinafores from when I started and my sons wouldn't have fitted in them when they were 2 let alone 5!

1977-1985. There was always uniform. Sussex. But, it was more like "a grey skirt and a green jumper". There weren't logo'd tops etc. It was pretty loose at my first school, a bit stricter at the second one. Did have to wear ties though.

That said, I am a fan of school uniform. Makes things a lot easier, and my DC's school lets them wear PE kit all day if they have PE or a sports ECA so basically they wear PE kit most days.

GlowWine · 09/12/2019 13:08

@Elbowedout Yes as far as I'm aware that's exactly it. Too many bad connotations with uniform especially on children/young people. I don't know if there is any legislation though (as there is regarding total ban on display of nazi insignia)

Stravapalava · 09/12/2019 14:50

There was an "optional uniform" at my Midlands primary school in the late 80s / early 90s. No one wore it.

Secondary school was very strict uniform.

Smellybluecheese · 09/12/2019 15:38

No, primary school in the 80s.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 09/12/2019 15:43

I went in the 90s to the same school my mum attended. When she went in the 70s the badge was still the same and available on jumpers and they had black and white ties. Wasn’t compulsory. When I went it was the same ties, badges on school jumpers, black and white tie. Now my son goes it’s the same but they have blazers now too.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 09/12/2019 15:44

My secondary school was the same Green tie, the Tie was the same when my mum went. It’s still the same now my nieces attend there but now they have blazers too.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 09/12/2019 15:47

Primary in the 80s, secondary in the 90s. Wore full uniform (skirt, blouse, tie and sweater) all the way up to 6th form.

DH, on the other hand, never worn school uniform at all. Which means I have to tie his tie for formal events 😂
