Why are some Labour voters in denial about JCs endorsement of party wide anti-Semitism

Rainbowhairdontcare · 30/10/2019 12:00

I'm in a tactical vote group on FB. There was a fairly civilised discussion about JC when I said as a Jew I can't vote for him, nor any of the members of the small community where we live.

Then I got told off for buying the "fear mongering biased media".

I've read and heard what he's said. As a Jew I can clearly see it as anti-Semitism. It baffles me that people are still in denial about it.

Oops, sorry wrong thread entirely, sorry

mencken · 30/10/2019 17:18

I don't know if Corbyn is actually anti-semetic but he isn't bothered if his party members are. He certainly doesn't seem too worried if more Israelis than Palestinians get killed in the endless conflict

bottom line - only 300,000 Jews in the UK. Even if they all voted for parties other than Labour, it would affect only a small number of MPs as the Jewish population tends to cluster in certain areas.

so it won't matter to Corbyn, or to any other politician, because there aren't enough votes in it to bother about.

missyB1 · 30/10/2019 17:42

I support Palestine but I am not a terrorist sympathiser and I resent the automatic link between the two that Witchend makes. This mentality is a way of shutting down people’s right to discussion isn’t it? If they dare criticise Israel’s actions let’s accuse them of being pro terrorism and anti semetic. No Government should ever be above criticism. I criticise the corruption in South Africa and some other African Countries (I have family links to Africa), does that make me racist? No it does not! Let’s call out shitty behaviour no matter which Country it’s in.

Echobelly · 30/10/2019 18:36

I think plenty of people know that anti-Israel doesn't have to = antisemitic, but there are definitely times when it does and some Labour people have crossed that line (conflating 'Jews' and 'Zionists', talking about 'Jewish/Zionist influence on the media' etc).

I have a possibly weird view that defeating the Tories is actually more important than some Labour people being antisemitic, and it would be better without Corbyn at the helm, but ultimately, a Labour government is hardly going to be sticking stars on our sleeves and sending us to camps. The Shoah didn't happen because the Nazis didn't manage antisemitism properly. Sorry, I know that seems glib, but it's how I feel. Labour are not an existential threat to Jews. The Tories and their policies are a very real threat to poor and disabled people, and that's more important.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 30/10/2019 18:38

I'm a self respecting person of Jewish heritage and I'm voting Labour. I believe in social justice, I don't like the Tories. I don't think for a moment that Labour are more toxic than the "hostile environment, Windrush" , Tory party and letterbox, piccaninnies, bum boys Johnson.

KayakingOnDown · 30/10/2019 18:42

The Panorama programme exposed systematic anti-semitism in the Labour Party, condoned by Corbyn and the rest of the leadership. It is ugly, very ugly.

And those that don't see it - there's none so blind as those that will not see.

missyB1 · 30/10/2019 19:02

Echobelly is right defeating the Tories is absolutely the priority as they are the biggest threat to the vast majority of us.

Stickyuptail · 30/10/2019 19:14

I want to be able to vote labour but as a Jew I don’t feel able to. I agree that while JC might not be anti-Semitic he has failed repeatedly to adequately deal with those within his party who are. That is unforgivable. I have no time for the Tories either as they have displayed blatant Islamophobia. They’re both grim parties for Jews and Muslims. If Corbyn really cared about the UK he would stand down.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/10/2019 19:37

Echobelly is right defeating the Tories is absolutely the priority as they are the biggest threat to the vast majority of us and to hell with the Jews because we are a minority- how nice of you

Echobelly · 30/10/2019 20:00

@OnlyFoolsnMothers - it's not to hell with us, but honestly poor and vulnerable people have been victims, have without question died, because of Tory policies. I'm not going to die because I'm Jewish if a left-wing Labour goverment comes in and I'm annoyed that some parts of the media are using feigned concern for Jews just so they can prevent a government that would likely be more just to the vulnerable.(Not that I think JC is the Second, or indeed, First Coming, despite the initials, but I think it's worth a shot)

As it happens, I'll be voting Lib Dem, for all my doubts about their integrity, as I think the Remain politics of my constituency plus the lost Jewish Labour votes are mostly likely to mean they have a better chance of unseating our Tory MP. I think I'm in probably the only seat in the country where the fall in Jewish Labout votes will make a difference.

missyB1 · 30/10/2019 20:27

and to hell with the Jews because we are a minority
Nobody said that as you well know!!! What exactly do you think is going to happen to Jews with a new Government? Disabled and poor people are suffering and some have died as a result of this Government’s policies, but do you think to hell with them??

missyB1 · 30/10/2019 20:31

Anyway as it happens I will be voting Lib Dem because I want Brexit cancelled and I believe Lib Dem have a good chance this time as the only remain party. But I don’t believe JC is anti semetic or a terrorist supporter. And I’m getting sick of this whole thou shalt not criticise Israel crap.

BingoLittlesUncle · 30/10/2019 20:53

Because the alternative is a Tory Govt.

NeverTwerkNaked · 30/10/2019 21:03

The Tories don't care if great swathes of vulnerable people die on their watch.

The only "evidence" of anti semitism from Jeremy C comes from the frothings of a right wing press. (Even BBC v biased to the right now).

I don't think it is anti Semitic to recognise that the history of Israel and Palestine is hugely complex. Same can be said of the N Ireland issues.

SirVixofVixHall · 30/10/2019 21:05

Just one of the reasons I won’t vote for him. I have jewish family members, I agree that the anti-semitism is not even concealed.

NeverTwerkNaked · 30/10/2019 21:07

The only party who can unseat the very nasty (ERG) conservative MP in my constituency is Labour so it is a binary choice for me.

GlitchStitch · 30/10/2019 21:12

The denial of anti-semitism I see from Corbyn supporters is incredible. He doesn't even try to hide it and it goes far beyond criticism of Israel. Here's a few highlights-

Stickyuptail · 30/10/2019 21:32

I have no problem with criticising the Israeli government. As a Jew I have a massive problem with many aspects of it. For anti-semites though the Palestinian occupation and the provocative Jewish settlements on the South Bank are used as a reason to take issue with Jews per se.

ArseDarkly · 30/10/2019 21:46

No self respecting person of Jewish heritage could possibly support the Labour Party under the current leadership

I'm of Jewish heritage and I support Corbyn. Presumably i'm not self-respecting in your opinion. Hmm

ForalltheSaints · 30/10/2019 21:47

I don't know but like the OP I could never betray part of my heritage.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/10/2019 22:11

I'm of Jewish heritage and I support Corbyn it’s as baffling to me as black people who support Trump

JasonPollack · 30/10/2019 22:18

Sorry but I don't think that his political opinions on Israel/Palestine constitute antisemitism. He is a lifelong antiracism campaigner fgs.

Patroclus · 30/10/2019 22:45

You ould have to be stuid not to see it in the labour party.

You would have to be even more stupid to not see the Right wing using it and people deflecting very needed criticism of Israel with it.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 30/10/2019 22:50

No one has claimed JC is anti Semitic based on his support of Palestine. Several posters have provided links to articles and also myself suggested you watch the panorama investigation to greater understand

Rainbowhairdontcare · 31/10/2019 09:04

I think part of the problem is not only JC/Labour but party members who fail to understand where we as Jews are coming from. I've just been told I was "smearing JC" without acknowledging what my parents and their parents have gone through.
