@Furries talk to me about your leonberger.Grin
How much energy do they have? Are they on the go all the time or happy to sleep and chill out?
Is yours very friendly or more aloof?

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 26/09/2019 14:52

Working cocker . Nuts but full of character and love to please and cuddle up .

Furries · 26/09/2019 17:37

@Maneandfeathers - I could happily talk about her all day!!

They’re not high energy, she’s perfectly happy snoozing and chilling out. You have to be fairly careful how much exercise they have as bones aren’t fully formed until around 2 years old - the bigger the breed the longer they take to become an adult.

They don’t eat as much as you may think. Need to take care what food you decide on - don’t want to high a protein content whilst they’re maturing as it can cause bone problems.

Low propensity for barking. I’ve got dogs either side of me which bark (yap) A LOT and she just mooches round the garden and doesn’t react to them. She barks so rarely that on the odd occasion when she does then it makes me jump!!

As a breed they should be fairly friendly. Mine, however, is pretty aloof. She’s VERY wary of anyone she doesn’t know (not in an aggressive manner, she’ll just try to back away). I’ve met one of her brothers and a sister - they’re both the same so think it may be something from their particular breeding pool. However, once she knows you then she’ll happily be by your side doing the classic “lean-on-Berger” pose at your side - for which you need to brace yourself!! She loves kids, just adults she’s wary of and she’s great with other dogs.

The only downside is the giant breeds having a shorter lifespan. She’s nearly 7.5 now so she’s classed as old age now.

If there’s anything else you want to know then just shout - they’re blooming awesome.

@Furries thankyou for the info! I would love one however I’m used to large herding types and I’ve not had a giant breed before.
I’ve spoken to a couple of breeders but they are hard to find Grin

I couldn’t deal with a barker or anything that’s likley to be aggressive so it sounds positive. Ideally I want a friendly family pet that’s happy for a walk morning and night but then ok to mooch around the rest of the time as I don’t want huge dogs zooming around allover the place. My GSD go mad outside then spend most of the day asleep Grin

I can imagine it’s hard to walk anywhere without being stopped!

Standard and Giant Schnauzers
Scottish Terrier
Berger Blanc Suisse - Swiss Shepherd

BasiliskStare · 26/09/2019 18:31

@Moonfacebaby and @ clockers41 are correct - Border terriers are the best dogs ever , in the world in space . gavel

Oh of course other dogs are lovely - so many lovely photographs.

Jasmin82 · 26/09/2019 18:48

Luckily for Resident Collie:
Border Collie.
That said, I want a Stabyhoun.

VetOnCall · 26/09/2019 19:21

Working Cockers ftw!

Also like Vizslas and Malinois.

Jasmin82 · 26/09/2019 19:22

For those unsure, I should have clarified. A Stabyhoun is the dog in second picture. First picture is Resident Collie being very impressed at the suggestion that cheese is not a suitable full time food for anyone.

Not a purebreed but a cross. My sister and her husband have a Spoodle which I understand to be a Welsh Springer Spaniel/Poodle cross. I honestly don't know if the poodle bit is Miniature or Standard. Nice enough dog but not terribly bright (tries to catch aeroplanes taking off).

Clockers41 Simply stunning dog!

My ultimate favourite: border terriers. Cannot beat these fiesty, intelligent, hardy, beautiful dogs.

I do love all kinds of terriers though. The little white wire haired terriers make my heart burst.

Other breeds I love:
Chihuahua
Beddlington
Deerhound
Staffy

moanyhole · 28/09/2019 23:22

We rescues a swiss shephard 3 months ago. She is just gorgeous and asleep next to me now. I adore her and she has put on weight and in fine fettle now.
My sister has an irish wolfhound. Nearly as tall as her and such a sweetheart

LackOfAdhesiveDucks · 29/09/2019 02:17

Based on looks:

Doberman (one day!)
Rhodesian Ridgeback

But my favourite specific dogs of all time are a JRT, a corgi, a border collie/husky cross, a husky, a staffie and a dachshund/chihuahua cross so a wide range.

DulciUke · 29/09/2019 02:56

I am sadly, dogless, but if I could adopt a dog, it would be one of the following: Greater Bernese Mountain Dig, Italian Spinone, Clumber spaniel, Gordon Setter, or a garden variety mutt.

northernknickers · 29/09/2019 07:51

I've just lost my third wonderful Bernese Mountain Dog...beautiful, majestic beasts they are too. But as a PP has already stated, sadly the giant dog breeds have a very limited life expectancy, and 7 years was a gift.

They will always be my favourite breed, but I think my next four-legged fur ball will be a Coton, as I now live in a much smaller house...😂

Phwooooar · 29/09/2019 07:55

Great Dane
Westie/Scottie
Ridgeback

Would have to be a Rottweiler for me. They're the most beautiful, loyal and loving dogs I've ever owned ☺️

MrsEricBana · 29/09/2019 09:19

6demandingchildren 😍😍 to your gorgeous boy.

wizzler poodles aren't getting much of a look in are they?! Very underrated imo, with everyone wanting a X-poo but not an actual poo. Yours is absolutely gorgeous (and so's mine!)

Windydaysuponus · 29/09/2019 11:44
