iPhone Snobbery

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 13:56

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

To people moaning about batteries - all phones suffer from this problem - it's a chemical limitation where the charge the battery can hold reduces over time.

You can fix it by getting the battery replaced. You can order them from eBay and do it yourself or take it to a phone shop. Apple also have a battery replacement programme for their older phones.

frenchonion · 01/02/2019 18:49

I was an iPhone snob for years (woul never comment on someone else's choice though!) but have recently got a huawai p smart. I didn't want to spend a fortune on a phone contract and it was this or a much older iPhone. Omg this thing blows my iPhone out of the water! Camera and battery life are infinitely better, and loads more memory. Apart from the total faff of switching to it with passwords and accounts and stuff (not huawai fault, just nature of moving from apple to android) its amazing. I don't find it any harder to use than my iPhone. I think I've finally joined team android Grin

luckylavender · 01/02/2019 18:55

In my office it's the opposite. The hipper or more technical people won't touch iPhones.

Lisbon · 01/02/2019 19:11

Yep, LuckyLavender.

Apple is the new Facebook, all the hip young things wouldn't be caught dead with one as it would ruin their street cred.

Redglitter · 01/02/2019 19:24

I prefer iPhone. It is a superior phone

No thats just your opinion.

Jupiter13 · 01/02/2019 19:27

Most iPhone users suffer from little man syndrome..😂

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/02/2019 19:38

Most iPhone users suffer from little man syndrome

Ridiculous comment!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2019 19:43

Tbh I'm not convinced by the iPhone as a phone, I still have a cheap, long battery life Nokia as well.

tabulahrasa · 01/02/2019 19:47

“I don't have to open the app to see if there's anything I need to know today.”

I swipe left on my iPhone and it tells me what’s up next in my calendar...

“Can anyone give an example of what you can't do”

PDFs... they needed an app, everything I needed to do on it needed an extra app, it was a complete pain.

And there’s no real price difference if I’m good with an older model IPhone, well actually mine was cheaper than most androids.

I don’t need it to be customisable, I just want it to do the things I need to do without spending time fiddling with it, so iPhones are better for me.

DS who is actually techy prefers Samsung’s.

grenadezombie · 01/02/2019 19:52

Most iPhone users suffer from little man syndrome..

Eh? What even is that?

I have an iPhone. I don't care what kind of phone other people have any more than o care what kind of microwave they have. I picked a phone and microwave to suit my needs and budget.

ChunkyNotSoKitKat · 01/02/2019 20:00

For the last 8 years I've had a Samsung personally and a work iphone and a few different versions of each. I absolutely hate the iPhone, the battery is rubbish the chargers always break and the screens always smash. Iphone snobbery is simply because they cost more and Apple have spent a fortune on the brand name

VanillaSauce · 01/02/2019 20:04

I'd say it more snobbery against apple especially from the true techies. iPhones are easy to use but that's it, they're too restrictive and you can't really do anything with them.

Therighthonourable · 01/02/2019 20:18

The thing that gets on my nerves is how i have heard people who own an iPhone say "can you pass me my iphone? ". Not "can you pass me my phone?". It's the constant calling it by the brand name.I have never heard anyone who owns a Samsung say "can you pass my Samsung?".

For the record I own both brands and call them both a phone in equal measure Grin.

Sinead100 · 01/02/2019 20:21

I have a Samsung (personal phone) and an iPhone (work phone) , and have done for years. I wouldn't ever choose to pay for an iPhone out of my own pocket as there is absolutely NOTHING that it does that my Samsung doesnt do. The snobbery OP talks about is definitely real but I shove two fingers at it Wink

grenadezombie · 01/02/2019 20:27

I absolutely hate the iPhone, the battery is rubbish

the chargers always break and the screens always smash.

What on earth are you doing with them Confused

Hedwigsradio · 01/02/2019 20:28

Oh yes the "I was on my iPhone thing" it would feel weird to call my phone by it's make. I don't really care what others use but do find the people who are kind of cult like about apple a bit weird. You don't see the as much but there was a point you would meet people who acted like Apple was their religion. It was very strange.

badreams · 01/02/2019 20:30

Just got myself a Samsung s9 after having iphones all my life. Thought I'd never convert but was becoming pissed off with scrappy battery life and other iphone problems so switched to Samsung and I doubt I'll ever go back to iPhone now

EarlyModernParent · 01/02/2019 20:35

I was finally forced to have an iPhone when work issued them to everyone. They aren't all that, I don't understand all the love for them.

Elphame · 01/02/2019 20:40

I tried Samsung but went through 3 laptops in 3 months and my phone lasted a mere 6 months.

Bought an iPhone and still have it 4 years later.

Not a fan of Samsung.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/02/2019 20:43

You must have been very unlucky or very careless Elphame

ForOldLandsEye · 01/02/2019 20:44

Ive had an iPhone since they first came out in 2007 and i cant imagine having anything else. I had a Blackberry before that and a Windows smart phone too. My sister has a Samsung S9 and it just seems so glitchy and complicated in comparison but I do agree with you about the coat and battery.

What concerns me about Android is security. Its the most hackable platform due to its accessability. I know iTunes is shit but the security involved does make iPhones almost impenetrable to Hackers.

ForOldLandsEye · 01/02/2019 20:44

cost not coat ffs. Although in this weather my phone could use a coat Grin

combatbarbie · 01/02/2019 21:04

I converted to android last year purely for the camera!!! I can afford to upgrade my handset (buying direct, No contract) every 12-18 months apposed to every 2-3yrs.... I am a convert!

Epanoui · 01/02/2019 21:39

“I don't have to open the app to see if there's anything I need to know today.”

I swipe left on my iPhone and it tells me what’s up next in my calendar...

Sorry, but the widget version is superior. Plus I can customise what it shows. I usually have it full page so I can check a month at a time. I can also change the shape and size of it to suit what I want to do with it and interact with it directly on the screen eg change months so I can check if an appointment or meeting is possible. I appreciate it's hard to explain how useful something is to someone who hasn't used it! But it's not just the calendar. I have widgets for all kinds of things. Some improve functionality. Some improve the look. None are available on Apple.

Romanov · 01/02/2019 21:46

for me its all the brands/models you can buy that have android,
Samsung Galaxy S8.
LG G6.
Google Pixel 3.
LG G7 ThinQ
Sony Xperia XZ2.
Samsung Galaxy S9 | S9+
Samsung Galaxy Note8.
Google Pixel 2.

the list just goes on and on
but they all have the same charger (well they're on the 3rd version) but i can use my S9 charger to charge my mp3 player, by headphones, battery pack etc

or i can have an iphone ...
