iPhone Snobbery

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 13:56

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

No idea - I use a £15 Tesco PAYG which has had £60 put on it over the last four years. I can make and receive calls and texts but it's usually languishing, uncharged, in the bottom of my handbag.

SciFiScream · 01/02/2019 14:40

I'm on apple and it's not so much snobbery that holds me back, it's the investment in time, effort and money in apps etc. I'd have to pay again for all my apps and learn how to transfer and learn how to use. So I'm lazy!
I buy all my tech second hand so am avoiding the new "Apple" premium.
I've got a 6+ and I'm noticing the battery life is starting to get dodgy. There's lots I can do to mitigate that so will start.
We're an Apple family. We can track each other and share our apps/purchases. So for us, at this time, it easy.
Definitely not snobbery!

Cookit · 01/02/2019 14:40

I’m not sure snobbery is the word. I mean, for most people your phone is free on a decent monthly contract sonits certianly not snobbery in that sort of context.

I find Apple intuitive but also we have a Mac and it syncs and all my data is stored with Apple so changing phone is easy. I don’t like WhatsApp and most people I know have an iPhone so we just you iMessage. Etc etc.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 01/02/2019 14:45

@LoniceraJaponica I'd disagree about android working with anything else. I've had other phones before and they've always proven problematic for me. But that's personal experience. If it works for you that's great!

ShadyLady53 · 01/02/2019 14:49

Following the studies done on the way smart phones affect the brain, I recently ditched my iPhone for a dumb phone (Nokia, £15 model). I am a recovering Apple addict. Still have my iPhone, iPad and MacBook but I really dislike the company now after becoming genuinely addicted to my devices. The technology was designed to be addictive. It IS harmful to young people and children especially. I hate Apple with a passion now and I think there will be a backlash in the near future.

For now, people see my crappy Nokia and think it’s the equivalent of wearing a tin foil hat Grin. The snobbery is real.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 01/02/2019 14:51

I'm an Apple person and hate using anything else now. You just get used to what you have. Plus my watch, iPad, AirPods etc are all linked 🤷🏽‍♀️ I find the battery on the X fine.

ChodeofChodeHall · 01/02/2019 14:52

I have both: Android for personal use and iPhone for work. I never use the iPhone unless I absolutely have to as it's so annoying! Android is much more user-friendly, in my opinion.

RedForShort · 01/02/2019 14:54

Don't understand how IPhones are easier to use. Any help me out?

Had an iPhone. It was ok. Battery life dreadful, lifespan of handset too short, memory woeful. All these things are massively better in an andoid found.

Also don't like how insular Apple devices are. My on apple advantage is their security, which probably ties into that insular fact.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/02/2019 14:55

"I'd have to pay again for all my apps"

All the apps I use on my Samsung were free. Do you have to pay for all Apple apps?

MotorcycleMayhem · 01/02/2019 14:55

It's REALLY not a free phone, you know that, right? A huge portion of the monthly contract is the cost of the handset - that's why an iPhone X or the latest Galaxy / Xperia costs in excess of £50/month on contract even for sod all minutes, texts, data.

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 14:56

Mixed reviews then. I suppose it really is down to personal preference. I guess I'm not that keen an the gold apple seem to have on people as a company, it's liberating to escape the apple trap.
Collecting it after 4pm, I'll soon let you all know what I think.

I went to android once and it just didn't do it for me, I find iphones much more intuitive and easier to operate. I like their integration with iTunes and apps like cloud, onedrive, find my iphone, family etc which are piss easy to find and use. Like many iphone users hate the price and would still buy them if they were much cheaper than android.

Nothing to do with snobbery, my iphone is a hand down from ds and about 5 years old! I think you are projecting some perceived inadequacy of your own phone/feelings.

LordPickle · 01/02/2019 14:57

I miss my Android. I have an iPhone XS now and a lot of things really annoy me about it, like the face recognition, the way that you have to swipe up to close apps, and the frustrating way you have to kinda side swipe to pull up your open apps.

scaryteacher · 01/02/2019 15:00

I'm with Silvery Surfer - I have a PAYG which does texts and calls, and I don't need/want anything else.

3out · 01/02/2019 15:02

I thought this was going to be how people look down their noses at those who use an iPhone, not the other way around.

I don’t think it’s snobbery. I would say to a friend ‘I couldn’t change from iPhone to android’ but that’s not because I have any ‘snobby’ feelings towards android users. I think you’re being overly sensitive/paranoid with the assumption. The reason I wouldn’t change from iPhone is the same as many others - we have invested in iPad, Apple TV etc and many albums and movies on iTunes. And, I find it intuitive to use, as do the kids.

Cookit · 01/02/2019 15:03

Yes of course I understand that, what I was meaning was that phones are pretty cheap so it’s not snobbery in the way one normally used the word - e.g. high end car drivers looking down on cheaper car drivers or whatever. If I chose an Android phone, unless I wanted to get one that was a few years old I’d be paying the same for my contract. I prefer Apple and also I’m kind of tied into Apple now and it would be a faff to change. That’s not snobbery.
The cost is basically the same so I’m not being flash when I get my iPhone out and I’m not expecting anyone to be impressed.... iPhones are ubiquitous.
I just don’t get what is snobbish to say you prefer Apple to Samsung?

Huggybear16 · 01/02/2019 15:04

It's the opposite for me.

I always had iPhones - from the first one through to the iPhone 6.

When I was due to upgrade my iPhone 6 I decided to try the Samsung.

I never went back to an iPhone. I've had Samsungs 7, 8 and now 9. I much prefer Samsung phones.

I've had my Samsung 9 for 6 months. Not a thing wrong wrong with it, and it's been dropped a lot and abused by my toddler.

Huggybear16 · 01/02/2019 15:06

^although, maybe it throws in an extra "wrong" occasionally

Scandaloso · 01/02/2019 15:06

I prefer iphones to android but I always buy a refurbished handset so I'm not one of those uber-fan weirdos who sleeps out overnight waiting for the latest release!

Shmithecat · 01/02/2019 15:11

I had Apple until about 3 years ago and they still hadn't pulled their finger out wrt releasing a dual SIM phone (which I needed) so I defected to Samsung and haven't looked back tbh. I especially love that you can expand the memory via an SD card. Both dh and I had all things Apple, but we're slowly weeding out the devices. Both our phones are now android. I've an android tablet. Dh is replacing his old iPad with a Windows tablet soon. The Mac mini is on its last legs so we're currently researching new mini pc options and lenovo is looking likely.

Glitteryfrog · 01/02/2019 15:14

Android have features which you just don't get on apple.
I love my widgets, I flick to the right and I can see a week of my calendar. I don't have to open an app.

Raven88 · 01/02/2019 15:20

I like both, DH has an S8 I have an IPhone. I think it's down to personal preference. It's like Pepsi and Coke. iPhones aren't as customisable and you can't expand the memory but I like the user interface. Both are good phones.

PorpentinaScamander · 01/02/2019 15:22

Android all the way.

I find it much easier to use than Apple. Probably because it's what I'm used to. I don't know anyone who has switched from Apple to android and then switched back.
However I know a lot of people who have done the opposite!

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 01/02/2019 15:30

I've always had iPhones so it's just what I prefer. I don't like change (even upgrading my iPhone takes me time to get used to the idea) so like to stick to the same thing.

My DC has a Samsung phone and it's perfectly fine. I only find it hard to use as I'm not the one using it all the time. In fact my other DC who got my old iPhone would prefer the Samsung.

DowntonCrabby · 01/02/2019 15:31

All the genuine tech types I know wouldn’t touch Apple with a barge pole so I genuine don’t think there’s a snobbery towards Android.
I’m an iPhone user sheep and if anything feel the snobbery is the other way. Apple tends to be a status thing for posers looking for the the latest phone and who want everyone to know they spunked £1k on their phone so maybe that’s where you feenits coming from. When I get a new phone 3-4 yearly it’s always at least one if not more versions “ago.”
