iPhone Snobbery

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

Pixels are USB C. But in the days when I had a Nexus 5 it really was convenient charging everything with the same lead!

unicornsrule · 01/02/2019 23:06

Agree omg - I have just upgraded to an iPhone xr battery is amazing

U2HasTheEdge · 01/02/2019 23:21

I will only use Apple laptops. I had an iPhone for years then switched to Samsung. I wouldn't go back to an iPhone anymore.

tabulahrasa · 01/02/2019 23:28

“Sorry, but the widget version is superior. Plus I can customise what it shows”

See I lasted a year and got rid of my Android before my contract was even up - because I didn’t want to customise everything or download things to make stuff happen.

An iPhone does what I need it to and I don’t want to spend any time fiddling with it.

See I don’t think iPhones are “better” I just think the stuff other phones are better at isn’t stuff I care about and the stuff I do care about was more complicated and it really irritated me.

SpoonBlender · 02/02/2019 01:07

Ye gods, the amount of Android and iPhone snobbery, non-facts and outright lies peddled in both directions in this thread! Amazing. Never understood why people get so ridiculously tribal about them.

We're a mixed family - Pixel2 and iPhoneX. They're both excellent pocket computers and do everything we want them to. The Pixel was cheaper, but in return it'll need replacing sooner as Google will (going by all past evidence) stop making updates for it sooner than Apple. Swings and roundabouts, actual spend has come out almost identical over the last 8 years.

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 01:12

I have both: Android for personal use and iPhone for work. I never use the iPhone unless I absolutely have to as it's so annoying! Android is much more user-friendly, in my opinion.

Exactly the same. Hate the bloody iPhone, always get stuck in pages I don't want. And no numbers on the front keyboard, or comma. WTF?

Lisbon · 02/02/2019 07:30

Let me lob this grenade and say the one thing guaranteed to get British people's knickers in a twist...

Get ready for the class debate....

iPhones are common.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 02/02/2019 08:10

Actually you could have something there Lisbon

The techies who have been using Macs for the past couple of decades are the ones who now more likely to have android phones.

The less technologically literate otoh...

ErrolTheDragon · 02/02/2019 08:53

Do 'techies' use macs?Confused depends what you mean by a 'techie' I guess... people doing real technical stuff on computers use Linux > windows > macs, ( scientific software, engineering...).

Computer techie people may not be as vulnerable to hacking as the general public because they have a better understanding of the security problems so maybe the balance of pros and cons could be different for them.

emmaliz · 02/02/2019 09:03

I can't see that much between them to be honest. Aren't apple suing samsung due to this very fact? Get the cheapest one.

Wintermonster · 02/02/2019 09:04

I wish I hadn't been sucked into the iPhone wizardry but after many years of avoiding it I jumped in and now I couldn't go back.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 02/02/2019 09:05

I use a Mac and am certainly not techie, I find it easier to use than Windows which I hate and can't wait to properly retire so I never have to use it again.

Rockbird · 02/02/2019 09:09

One swipe left on my iPhone and I get this screen. I can add all sorts of things to this, this is just what I choose to have on there.

And while yes many people see Apple as a status symbol, some of us have been using Apple products since people laughed at us back in the early 90's. I have a book called 'Macintosh, the Naked Truth' all about one guy's responses to being a Mac user and having the piss ripped out of him!

I've put in many many years of hard work on Apple and I'm not giving it up, nor handing it solely over to the showy offy twats of this world! Grin

But I don't judge you if you haven't yet seen the light... Wink

Seriously, for a lot of us now, our phones contain our whole lives. Use what you're comfortable with and what works for you, sod everyone else's preferences. Peace and love.

Rockbird · 02/02/2019 09:11

I mean swipe right Hmm

sluj · 02/02/2019 09:16

Im not sure an i-phone is a status symbol anymore. DS (year 13) confidently tells me that they are considered "cool" for a first phone up to about year 8, then they all want android. By then the screen will be smashed anyway.
Sad to say that if I think of an iphone user I also imagine the screen being tapped with long stick on finger nails encrusted with glass diamonds 😁 Is that what you meant by "common" Lisbon? 😉
Seriously though, your money your choice.

2sandwhichesplease · 02/02/2019 09:21

I used to have an iPhone. Hated it. Very basic for the price they charge. I now only have Samsung's and they are worth the money you pay. Much more advanced and more features. Battery life is good. Camera is good. Dh has an iPhone and struggles with android. So I think depending on what you use it for is the key here

WhentheDealGoesDown · 02/02/2019 09:25

Whats all this about smashed screens, my 3 year old iPhone is pristine, in fact when I got my battery changed, the person at Apple remarked on what good condition it was in, I am old though and keep it carefully in a case, I also don't routinely drop it Grin. I also have not very nice stubby nails unfortunately, no encrusted stick ons for me.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/02/2019 09:27

I really dislike the assumption that everyone has an iPhone.

A PP pointed out that it is often used as a generic term for a smart phone. I don't know whether this has changed yet, but our local shopping mall has charging points for iPhones only, and most shops that sell phone covers only stock them for iPhones.

Rockbird · 02/02/2019 09:32

What features? What is this elusive thing you can do that I can't? Tell me. Convert me.

caughtinanet · 02/02/2019 10:03

I've noticed the assumption on MN too, on any thread about someone losing a phone pretty much the first post will always be “use find my iPhone” Er,yes, that'll really help locate my Huwai phone.

Romanov · 02/02/2019 10:03

Whats all this about smashed screens, my 3 year old iPhone is pristine, in fact when I got my battery changed, the person at Apple remarked on what good condition it was in

so even the person at Apple was surprised about the condition??

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 10:12

Any phone will break if you don't take care of it. I have never broken an iPhone or a Samsung and have probably had equal ownership of the 2.

My friend breaks EVERY handset she ever owns.

Smashed screens are a measure of care not brand.

bruffin · 02/02/2019 10:15

I struggle with android phones, apple is far more user friendly
That's only because your used to Iphone. I was trying to help my friend with her Iphone and nothing was where I was where I intuitively expected it to be.
Friend has now gone across to a Pixel which my DH and DS have and both love. I will stick to my Samsungs for now, although the update last night was annoying for turning the camera icon from blue to redAngry

needsleepzzz · 02/02/2019 10:27

Have no opinion on who uses what, have heard the Huewai phones can be amazing, same with Samsungs, personally i just can't use them, prefer how iPhones are laid out, I guess its what i'm used to. My husband isn't fussed either way, had 2 Samsungs, both developed faults at around 3yrs old, he's now using my iPhone 6s and has been happy with them all.
I have the iPhone XS and the camera is amazing

caughtinanet · 02/02/2019 10:29

I agree bruffin, one of my DC has an iPhone and I struggle to use it, that's to be expected and isn't evidence either way. I'm still waiting for examples of what iPhones do that others cant
