iPhone Snobbery

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 13:56

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

I prefer Android to iPhones and have had both. I would never go back to iPhone. Equally, I have had Google phones and Samsung and would never go back to Samsung! My current phone is a Pixel 2 XL and it is absolutely lovely. I also have a Pixelbook so they work together beautifully.

DowntonCrabby · 01/02/2019 15:33

FFS too many typos while trying to multitask. iPhone clearly isn’t that good Grin

PuppyMonkey · 01/02/2019 15:43

I seem to know lots of people with Samsung Galaxy phones - you may speak of “iPhone snobbery” OP, but I reckon some suffer from “Samsung smuggery.” Grin

Seriously though, looking down their noses at me and my ourageously expensive £250 iPhone SE - “oh what a rip off - you have to PAY for all your apps don’t you?” Well... no, I don’t anyway.

Banging on about Android and all the stuff they can allegedly do that Apple can’t. Whatever. Bugger off. Grin

ImMeantToBeWorking · 01/02/2019 15:44

I am an android user and I tried an iPhone and hated it. It is just the different operation system takes a bit of time to get used to. I have used my sisters S9 and I love it!

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 01/02/2019 15:44

I love Samsung's, why would you want to pay for apps?

Scandaloso · 01/02/2019 15:46

You only pay for certain apps. Same as with Samsung.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/02/2019 15:46

My work phone is an iPhone. I'd never ever ever buy an iPhone for myself now. I've got an S8 and that's far superior.

Rockbird · 01/02/2019 15:47

I don't think it's snobbery, just preference. I've always had iPhones, wouldn't touch android. Nice enough phones but I couldn't deal with that horrible OS. Whenever I've had occasion to use one, when sorting out my dad's phone or a tablet I last about 3 minutes before wanting to throw the damn thing into a bush. However, that's my preference and I couldn't give a hoot what other people use. Plenty of people feel the opposite, good for them. Don't let it bother you.

Effendi · 01/02/2019 15:47

I didn't like my first iPhone in the beginning. It was given to me and I felt obliged to use it. It was a 4 and looking back, so heavy and small.
I grew to love it and was devastated when I dropped it down the toilet.

Replaced it with a Nokia Lumia and hated that so much that I gave it to my Mum and bought a 2nd hand iPhone 4.

Replaced that last year with a 2nd hand 6. Very happy.

I have a Huawei phone for work and it's awful.

I've heard good things about Samsung but I prefer Apple overall.

OutPinked · 01/02/2019 15:47

I couldn’t switch to Android either but it’s not because I’m a snob, I’m just far too used to Apple software and own a MacBook and iPad too so they all sync together.

I prefer Apple’s software, it’s far superior and much easier to use. Tried a Samsung last year but returned it after three days, couldn’t get used to it whatsoever.

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 15:49

I hope I don't turn into a Samsung smug!

I’ve had an iphone for years and am sick to death of the shit battery life and temperamental chargers. I’d love to swap to samsung but have lots of apps I use frequently that I’ve paid for, and I love my ipad which has great battery life.

In fact saying the iphone battery life is shit is a massive understatement. I’m still on an iphone 6 and it doesn’t last a working day with light use before it needs to be plugged in.

Walnutwhipster · 01/02/2019 15:50

Change your friends. I moved from apple and love my S9. You know a product is on the way out when kids dont want them anymore. DS got an SE for his twelfth birthday when they first came out. When he upgraded last year aged 14 he went for an S9, iPhones aren't cool anymore apparently.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 01/02/2019 15:50

Apple family here, because they get passed down as I upgrade every few years. I like the family sharing, and I haven’t broken any iPhones while I broke three Samsung handsets.

I’ll stick with Apple because we have four phones, two iPods, an iPod and a watch that can all be easily run off my main account.

I don’t look down on Android users, each to their own. I do however think people who resort to name calling because I use Apple products are a bit lacking in imagination.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 01/02/2019 15:51

An iPad*

I’m not feeling the love for proof reading today!

PuppyMonkey · 01/02/2019 15:51

(See what I mean about smuggery Wink).

DonnaDarko · 01/02/2019 15:52

I moved from an iPhone to a OnePlus 5t last year, and I love it. I'm a really big fan of android now.

I think it depends on the phone you get sometimes. Samsungs have a lot of bloatware so they slow down eventually I'm told.

BlooShampoo · 01/02/2019 15:53

It’s not snobbery - I absolutely hate “status symbol” anything. I don’t give a shit about brands. I’m the anti-snob. But every non-iPhone I’ve owned was an absolute punishment to use. The planned obsolescence is annoying, but I’d rather have the phone crap out after two years than have a phone which is crap from the moment it’s taken out of the box (which has been my experience with the various androids i’ve owned)

SciFiScream · 01/02/2019 15:54

@LoniceraJaponica - many apps are free, but the ones I use most have costs attached to them. It's not much maybe £1.99 or so (most expensive app was £9.99 and I got it half price) but multiply that by all the apps I use and it adds up.

Victormeldrew1 · 01/02/2019 15:55

much prefer samsung hate iPhones they are most definitely not worth stupidly high price ppl pay the battery is rubbish and if u forget ur password then the phone is useless

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2019 15:59

So, will I regret it?

You may if you get hacked. The android OS is apparently much more hackable than IOS, and the apps don't get the same vetting. DH reads and thinks a lot about online security and simply wont touch android devices; he also won't use windows for banking etc.

If you're using it simply as a phone, camera and for browsing, that sort of stuff, presumably ok.

SciFiScream · 01/02/2019 15:59

To be clear the app cost £19.99 originally and I only paid £9.99!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2019 16:00

if u forget ur password then the phone is useless

Some would see that as a good thing.

SciFiScream · 01/02/2019 16:01

Oh and in keeping with security theme Apple were GDPR compliant before GDPR (kinda) while google and Android have had all sorts of data loopholes and breeches.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2019 16:02

All the apps I use on my Samsung were free. Do you have to pay for all Apple apps?

I've not paid for any apps on my iPad or iPhone yet.
