iPhone Snobbery

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 13:56

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

when we upgrade, DH and I can pass on our old phones to the children

No kids, I pass mine to my mum.

VanGoghsDog · 02/02/2019 16:15

Not sure I get your point here. Apple were a company back then too. They didn't sell smartphones, but neither did Samsung.

The point was in the sentence before that you've chosen not to quote. If you connect the two together you'll understand.

And, no, they didn't, that's why I didn't say smart phone, I said mobile phone.

InSightMars · 02/02/2019 16:27

Epanoui Your DH has been very unlucky to have needed so much attention to his phone, never had a single problem with mine nor has DH and he’s had 2 iPhones. So, you know, my anecdotal evidence is worth as much as yours which is to say, nothing.

As for the bloatware, that isn’t causing your DH’s space problem, I’m looking at my settings right now and it’s negligible, at best I’d gain 50 - 60 mb if i could uninstall the apps I dont use. He clearly needs a phone with more storage period or he needs to manage his storage in the cloud or to external drives better.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/02/2019 16:51

Surely all the settings are set by default to the secure option?

The default settings on many devices (inc apple, and routers in particular, btw) - are often not set up securely. One reason is that lax settings mean things are more likely to work out-of-the-box, and the other, obviously, is that you may need to set passwords.

The other thing which can happen is that after an update, you may find settings some have been changed.

grenadezombie · 02/02/2019 17:21

You had a Samsung phone in 1999? Still don't get the relevance. Do you mean to suggest because Samsung sold phones before Apple they are better?

No argument either side from me, but I can't see how a pre smartphone era phone proves any point.

MouseUtopia · 02/02/2019 17:32

I can't figure out where my stuff is meant to be stored. It's a Samsung phone with Samsung storage and settings, yet I seem to also have lots of Google shite on it and Google settings and cloud storage. I don't know what is where or what is secure and what is best to use or avoid. The entire phone seems to run two of everything.

I'm not stupid or tech phobic, but nothing is clear and I don't have the time, interest or concentration to spend hours researching.

I feel like I'm back in the frustrating land of windows which I ditched years ago.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/02/2019 17:52

Do Iphones accept SD cards now?

Shmithecat · 02/02/2019 18:11

@LoniceraJaponica nope, tight gits.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/02/2019 18:34

So, I can confidently say that Android phones have this as an advantage over iPhones?

Shmithecat · 02/02/2019 19:00

Yep.

Dothehappydance · 02/02/2019 19:12

My work phone is a Samsung and I really hate it, I am always muttering about how rubbish it is. It just does stuff of its own accord and is really hard to navigate.

But I quite like my Moto phone.

It isn't iPhone Vs Samsung, there are other tv listings android phones available.

I just have a deep mistrust of Apple, it extends to Amazon as well so not picky.

Plaiceholder · 02/02/2019 19:26

Great Apple trade in prices at the moment. Traded in an ancient iPhone 6 for an Xr and got £155 off (and a free screen protector - £15). The total cost for Xr + shop fitted screen protection was £595.

Jimjamjooney · 02/02/2019 19:59

I've just made the switch from an iPhone 6 to a galaxy S9 and I am gutted to say I'm not loving it and will look to switch back when my contract is up. It doesn't help that I'm probably used to the IOS operating system, but here are some of my gripes after switching to android.

If you want to set a timer, use the calculator or get Bixby (like Siri) to do anything for you, you need to unlock the phone first which I didn't have to do with my iPhone.
The autocorrect function lacks intelligence (loving is a word).
When using the internet, I have to scroll down to get the tabs button to appear before I can switch tabs. You also can't copy a whole URL by holding down the web address bar.
The fingerprint scanner is in a silly place to me (the phone is large and even me with large hands struggles to reach it under the camera).
You have to tap multiple times to call someone from your text page. You also have to turn on swipe to call someone from the recent list rather than just tap to call on iPhone. This swipe gesture wouldn't be so bad if the screen could recognise my swipe better.
Spotify isn't the same either (No status bar or rewind from swipe down menu, and it disappears all together if you pause the song and lock the phone)- however it's a spotify issue as they haven't developed it to the same standard as the IOS version.

It's little things that make everything feel long winded that frustrate me with the S9 but I will say there are some cool features too.

MulderitsmeX · 02/02/2019 20:50

I have had iphone and samsung. For me the main problem with iphone is tgat it won't plug into my dell computer. Everything else is the same
I only really use my phone to instagram and mumsnet!!

Epanoui · 02/02/2019 23:59

I don't know what is where or what is secure and what is best to use or avoid. The entire phone seems to run two of everything.

Just pick which one you want to use (Google probably more portable and easy to use across different phones and platforms) and uninstall the others if you can?

Your DH has been very unlucky to have needed so much attention to his phone

Maybe it's him! He has had similar problems with every iPhone he's had. Or maybe it's the iPhone. No idea. Yes, anecdotes are not data. Rockbird's acquaintances were probably similarly unlucky with their Motos. DH has had six or seven iPhones and similar problems with each. I've had one iPhone, one Samsung and three Google phones. I haven't had anywhere near the amount of problems he has had.

I think these are all Samsung issues rather than Android issues. I don't recognise any of them and am using stock Android on the latest version daily.

VanGoghsDog · 03/02/2019 00:06

I agree those must be Samsung issues. I have Androidone on my Nokia, most up to date version, and I don't have any of the issues mentioned.

VanGoghsDog · 03/02/2019 00:10

@grenadezombie

The point I was making was in response to people saying that everyone who doesn't love iphones was being snobby about Samsung phones. I was saying I'm not because I've never had one, except my first ever mobile phone (I had a car phone before that, no idea what make!) which was a Samsung.

My current phone is Nokia, before that OnePlus, before that Google Nexus which was my first smart phone, before that I can't remember but around then I was using Blackberry for work.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 03/02/2019 05:01

Is Samsung different to other Android phones as you seem to have Apple, Windows, Samsung and then all the rest (Android) DH has a Moto which seems to be in all the rest. Samsung seems to be in its own category though, is it a different system?

Ethel80 · 03/02/2019 06:54

I've had iPhones since they came out and love them, my partner has always had android phones. We both hate using each other's phones. I find his android sounds tinny, I don't like the OS and it just seems complicated to use.

I had a Samsung galaxy for work for a while and I hated it, in fact we all hated our phones and I think all but one of the team were iPhone users.

iPhones are easy and things work how they should and interact with my other devices.

As PP have said it's not snobbery, it's preference.

calpop · 03/02/2019 07:10

There's basically "Pure Android" and "manufacturers Android". So some manufacturers, like Samsung, take the excellent Android operating system and then put a load of their crapper software on top of it. Other manufacturers of Android phones don't, or not as much. So Pixel phones, which are sold by Google itself, will use pure Android, because its Google. One Plus, Huawei etc, also dont mess witb Android much and dont put too much annoying software on top, or the software is complementary. Moto etc are in between.

So that's why I'd always buy an Android phone, but probably never a Samsing, as I find their way of doing things, through their software on top of Android, annoying. I don't know why they do it tbh. I guess to try and distinguish themeselves from all the other "standard" Android phones from other manufacturers/suppliers in order to charge exorbitant iphone style prices.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 03/02/2019 07:42

Thank calpop for explaining, Samsung seems to have set itself aside from the others and did seem to be something different and prices do seem a lot higher, also there always seems to be the iPhone/Samsung race to the top and a lot of comparisons made when a new one is released, whereas other phones are not mentioned nearly as much.

LoniceraJaponica · 03/02/2019 07:53

I agree that Samsung put too much bloatware on their phones. I have uninstalled a load of apps that I am never going to use, but you can't uninstall all of them as it won't let you.

calpop · 03/02/2019 08:01

I think the problem for phone companies is that the actual hardware is a mature technology - so once all phones had good cameras, curved screens, fingerprint readers etc it becomes harder to differentiate themeselves, in order to be able to justify higher prices. Apple do it on not much at all - the name. Samsung do it on their bloatware and high end hardware. Its getting harder to justify though as the other hardware manufacturers catch up (Apple dont make the phones remember, its all contracted out).

So the choice is, remove a few features to keep costs down and sell more to more people or look for ever new features to justfiy higher prices and sell fewer at the top end for higher prices. So the next thing that expensive phones will have is 5G capabiliry, advanced AI for facial recognition and beyond and foldability. 5G fair enough, once the 5G networks are readily available, advanced AI, thats the way all tech is going. But foldability? Does anyone actually want or need to fold their phone? I have enough trouble finding the damn thing in my bag as it is.

But back to the original question. Be careful about judging things if you have switched from iPhone to Samsung. Its the obvious choice in some ways as they seem comparable because of price byt its almost certain to be a negative experience. I hate using Samsungs too (though haven't for awhile so they may have got better) as they do not represent the pure (or stock) Android experience.

Jimjamjooney · 03/02/2019 10:25

Epanoui maybe it is a samsung issue. I've only ever had Apple or Samsung smartphones so I cannot compare what the android system is like with another manufacturer.

nevernotstruggling · 03/02/2019 10:42

I'm going to Android when the iPhone packs op the camera is much more flattering!!!
