iPhone Snobbery

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

I have a Sansung S8 and love it. My kids have huawei and honor phones and they are great for cheap phones. My only experience with Apple was years ago when I had an Ipod. It was fine until it stopped working and I had couldn't put the music that I had paid for onto my new non Apple mp3 player.
I always get confused on these threads by people saying that android phones are difficult to use, but then it's what you get used to I suppose. I just can't imagine how Iphones can be that much different.

If you want to set a timer, use the calculator or get Bixby (like Siri) to do anything for you, you need to unlock the phone first which I didn't have to do with my iPhone. This is one difference I didn't know about. It doesn't bother me though as with the fingerprint scanner my phone opens when I pick it up.

When using the internet, I have to scroll down to get the tabs button to appear before I can switch tabs. You also can't copy a whole URL by holding down the web address bar. Are you using chrome because I can do both of these of my phone. Maybe it's an S9 thing?

The fingerprint scanner is in a silly place to me (the phone is large and even me with large hands struggles to reach it under the camera). Mine is next the camera lens and is in the perfect place to unlock my phone as I pick it up. I have small hands too.

You have to tap multiple times to call someone from your text page. You also have to turn on swipe to call someone from the recent list rather than just tap to call on iPhone. This swipe gesture wouldn't be so bad if the screen could recognise my swipe better. I don't even know what this means Blush. I guess calling from the text message page can mean a a few taps, No idea what you mean about the swiping though.

I don't have spotify so can't comment about that.

This thread really does show that we all have different preferences and it is all about what you are used to using.

It's just personal preference. I was anti apple for years and now my like has truly been appled lol ... I like how my products works with each other, so I can type up a document on my Mac and then access and adjust it on my phone or iPad. So to move other would mean changing everything, so I wouldn't consider it now. I prefer the Apple interface though and the cleaner feel to the products. But ultimately it's just personal preference.

Dragonglass · 03/02/2019 11:47

cleaner feel to the products

Whereas I feel that Apple phones look messy and cluttered with all the icons on the home screen. Grin

@calpop iOS is based on the core of macOS and that is based on BSD not UNIX. Android is based on Linux but is running a JVM.

I'm a "techie" (I work in IT so that should qualify me) and I've used an iPhone since the original. I've also used quite a few Android phones. Apples integration with other Apple devices and services is what does it for me, oh and build quality and reliability. That and I just prefer the way iOS (and macOS) work. The split between other techies i know is 60/40 in favour of iPhones but to be fair I don't think being a "techie" has owt to do with it. Non-technical people I know is a different story. 80/20 in favour of a Apple iOS devices (iPads and iPhones)

Massive amount of misunderstanding of both Android and iOS in this thread. Either that or deliberate misinformation.

My advice? Use what you like and don't try to preach or covert others. Let them use what they want to use.

As well as my reasons above I won't use Android as it's a security & privacy risk, I won't use Huawei as they spy on you to servers in China. I won't use Samsung as I can't stand that company.

But you can all use what you want. Being an Apple snob (or a snob of any other company) is just stupid. They don't pay you for that kind of marketing or loyalty.

When using the internet, I have to scroll down to get the tabs button to appear before I can switch tabs.
You only have to move the screen by a mm or 2 and it appears. You can also swipe sideways on the address bar and it moves across to your next tab.

You also can't copy a whole URL by holding down the web address bar.
Yes you can Confused

The fingerprint scanner is in a silly place to me (the phone is large and even me with large hands struggles to reach it under the camera).
I have really small hands and have no issue reaching the scanner. Maybe it's down to different ways of holding the phone?

You have to tap multiple times to call someone from your text page.
Do you mean text messages? If you've got the messages to a certain person open you can press the phone icon at the top and it calls them.

You also have to turn on swipe to call someone from the recent list rather than just tap to call on iPhone. This swipe gesture wouldn't be so bad if the screen could recognise my swipe
I guess this is a preference thing.

I've never used Spotify on iPhone so no idea about the differences sorry.

Jimjamjooney · 03/02/2019 18:28

PorpentinaScamander I still prefer having the tab button to use immediately-it's especially a pain (for me) when you've been typing and you need to exit the keyboard and then scroll to get the tab button to appear. Thank you for the tip on switching tabs, that's new to me (still not helpful though as I often have 10+ tabs open Blush )

I have tried multiple times with the url in samsung browser and chrome. You hold it down and it never selects the full url-you have to drag the cursor to select the rest before copying. I have however just discovered that if you double tap the address bar it selects the whole thing! I think my screen may be slightly dodgy though because double tapping is temperamental.

Yes I did mean text messages but when you tap the call icon it takes you to another page where you have to tap the call icon again-on my old phone when you tapped the call icon in a conversation with someone it would call them immediately.

Reaching the fingerprint scanner will be something to do with how I hold my phone (more used to using my thumb to unlock and holding the lower half of my phone).

These are just my personal bugbears however, some of which will be down to me being used to a different operating system.

All 3 of my children have owned iPhone at some point they're all on Android now and they have all said that they would never go back to Apple

TheWorldAsh · 03/02/2019 18:52

@calpop well at least it's not based on Windows...

calpop · 03/02/2019 19:02

very true

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 03/02/2019 19:07

I don't care what phone I, or anybody has. I had a basic Sony before i got this iPhone. I've only have it because my husband upgraded to a newer phone. I pay £5 a month SIM only for my mins text and calls. I don't intend and I have no need to upgrade because it does what I need it to do.

I can not justify paying extortionate amount for a poxy phone, let alone a contract that you're tied into and not ending up using majority of the data or minutes because you can access WiFi pretty much everywhere now, people call/message via WhatsApp.

DameSquashalot · 17/02/2019 20:23

I really hated my Samsung, but I love the new ad.

ShaggyRug · 17/02/2019 20:28

It’s not snobbery for me. I have an iPhone simply because I’m a blithering idiot on anything that uses android. Just can’t use it.

Ideally I’d love a Samsung, HTC or Hauwei phone that ran on IOS. I shall continue to dream.
