iPhone Snobbery

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 13:56

It's a real thing, isn't it. I'm in the process of getting a new phone and have ordered a Samsung Galaxy s9. Anyone i have mentioned it to have all said 'oh I could never go to android after having an apple phone' 🙄

I have an iPhone now, and yes it is good, but the battery life is shocking, and I can't really think of anything it does that I couldn't get in another phone. I've had a mixture of iPhones and Samsungs in the past and have liked them both for different reasons. So why do I feel judged?!

Another motivating factor is money. I got such a good deal for the latest Samsung compared to what the newest iPhone would have cost, I just can't justify the extra money.

So, will I regret it?

I changed to a Samsung after having an iPhone for years. I lasted 3 months before selling it in disgust. I think my iPhone habits are just too deeply ingrained to switch to another operating system. Nothing to do with snobbery.

Whitney168 · 01/02/2019 16:08

I'm not a snob about it, couldn't give a monkey's what other people use (and indeed often don't remember what model iPhone I have myself).

Have had Blackberry, Windows and Android phones as a work phone and hated them all - especially the bloody Windows thing. Apple just works, and it's obvious how (to my brain, at least).

Not had any of the battery or charger issues mentioned above (touch wood) and have always got a really good price when I've eventually upgraded and sold older models on.

Hotterthanahotthing · 01/02/2019 16:09

My dd has a second hand iPhone and loves it.I don't find them intuitive and also cannot justify silly amounts of money for a phone.

Candace19 · 01/02/2019 16:11

I prefer iPhone. It is a superior phone. An expensive one but I couldn't go to android.

Redglitter · 01/02/2019 16:15

I think its what you're used to. I wouldn't take an iPhone if it was free & i certainly wouldnt pay the price of an ipad.

I never understand though when people say Androids are harder to use. I dont think my Samsung could be any simpler.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 01/02/2019 16:37

DH has an Android and it doesn't seem very good, I have just had a new battery for my iPhone 6S and and has given it a new lease of life, they are only expensive if you upgrade all the while, nothing snobby about using an old phone. Also I don't trust the security of Android or Windows and would never do my banking on either now, years ago I banked on a Windows computer and it had a Trojan thing, never used one since.

Good for you ShadyLady53

Puggles123 · 01/02/2019 16:50

Allthe genuine tech types I know wouldn’t touch Apple with a barge pole so I genuine don’t think there’s a snobbery towards Android.

I think largely this is because you can put it into developer mode (not the same as jailbreaking an iPhone!) and fiddle about with bits and bobs- but you need knowledge of tech to do so. There are also hidden games depending on the update, the marshmallow one was the best!

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 01/02/2019 16:54

I have a comparatively old SE which does everything I need, especially once I learned how to increase text size 😂 so no need or desire to change.

The camera on DH’s Samsung is way better though and that is surpassed by a friend’s very untrendy huweii which is amazing.

Horses for courses, but I struggle to see that new Apple phones are worth the extra money.

Lisbon · 01/02/2019 17:02

We were iPhone early adopters (were there for most of the Mac revival too) and got the very first out of the US.

Had them for a couple of generations, then they just became rather unimpressive.

I've had two Google Phones and they are a thing of beauty... Completely easy to costumise, no bloatware, Innovative and amazing quality. Love them so much!

Romanov · 01/02/2019 17:06

i have a friend who is so apple it hurts, cant accept that Android may do anything better than an Apple, even when you point out the obvious flaws she launches in to a full on "what about ism" - its a shame, she is an intelligent lady, but cannot see that Apple isnt perfect

personally i dont like Apple as its too restrictive...

is it true you cannot change the icons?? thats crzy

Candace19 · 01/02/2019 17:25

@Romanov why would you want to change the icons?

Romanov · 01/02/2019 17:31

on my android i can change the look of the icons to look nicer, say i like black and white, or (the current favourite) rose gold, i can make all my icons look pretty depending on my mood...can you do that on an iphone?

Rockbird · 01/02/2019 17:34

I have asked this on a thread before but no one could really answer what it is about android that's so customisable. I've had iPhones since the first one in 2007 and have never once come across anything that I can't do. I'm not being narky, I just genuinely wonder.

PuppyMonkey · 01/02/2019 17:37

Make the icons look nicer?Confused

Okay....

caughtinanet · 01/02/2019 17:37

What is it that's hard about android? Can anyone give an example of what you can't do, I've read so many times that apple phones just work out of the box but every android phone I've had has done exactly the same, you switch them on and that's it, what are people doing?

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2019 17:47

Being able to change icons sounds like it might be a bad idea if malware could do this and you clicked on a doppelgänger...

A bit of googling suggests you can change apple icons with a bit of work, if you really want to.

hippoherostandinghere · 01/02/2019 17:52

Well I've just set it all up and it looks great so far. All seems simple enough and the camera looks amazing. Still need a good play round with it to check out all the features but it scans my irises Grin

To the post whos DH has hacker concerns than honestly is just not on my radar, it really is a bit much not to use online banking due to such fears. I'll deal with that if it happens (although they wouldn't get very much!).

You can't do widgets on an iPhone. Things like my calendar widget make it so much more usable. I don't have to open the app to see if there's anything I need to know today.

RedForShort · 01/02/2019 18:14

Is anyone going to explain the 'easier to use' thing.

They are phones both can be turned on and off; both have icons for apps; both have settings; both have side swipe option; both etc etc

Where's the difference?

Romanov · 01/02/2019 18:21

It's just customisable

iPhone Snobbery
RedForShort · 01/02/2019 18:27

So Samsung is because it's customisable. (I wouldn't both myself, but do like the 'close all' option.)

What about Apple?

Fiddie · 01/02/2019 18:34

I hated my Samsung. Binned it after 3 months of trying to convince myself it was ok and went back to the iPhone.

hinely · 01/02/2019 18:38

The iPhone is very overpriced for what it offers, but Apple have a captive market as they are the ones supplying phones running iOS. If you've become used to iOS it can be really hard to get used to Android which is far less seamless.

You can get iPhone quality hardware for a third of the price of an iPhone if you buy the upcoming Chinese brands (all Android OS). But if you really can't get used to Android then there's always the option of last year's iPhone which is usually quite a bit cheaper, especially if second hand.

I use the iPhone but cringe every time I buy a new one.

Hedwigsradio · 01/02/2019 18:47

I think it's down to taste. I like to mess around with my phone and change things so iPhone isn't great for me. I had one a few years ago and ended up putting android on it I hated it so much.
