Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

Are you all actually inside my parents house?? Did you break in and take photos???
My favourite is the 'shelled and beaded' plant hanger..

Sidge · 15/08/2018 10:17

Birdsgottafly no way?! Macrame is back in?!

Jeepers, I’ll tell my mum; she’s probably still got all of hers.

Walking round the house was like doing a slalom, trying to avoid getting hit in the face by a spider plant.

I grew up with loads of the things on this thread, and had a teasmade when I was at uni. It was brilliant as I could have tea without even getting out of bed! Which for a student was the ultimate.

We also had coloured bathrooms with soap with a magnet stuck in it. Remember them?

Me too Hamsterwheel - just so practical ...and private!!!

TheFaerieQueene · 15/08/2018 10:19

Drinks trollers are the thing to have again. Possibly not the bog standard 70’s chrome and glass or faux globe, but there are some really stunning trollies available. I’m currently debating on buying a vintage medical trolley to use as one.

The fly screens are useful too. I have a plain white one on the door of the boot room. It stops 85% ish of wasps, horse flies and regular flies, so invaluable as the door is open all day every day.

I love the 70’s. It reminds me of being a little girl. Sigh.

prampushingdownthehighst · 15/08/2018 10:22

God this thread has made me feel really old.
I remember so many of these things Sad

DerelictWreck · 15/08/2018 10:26

What's wrong with a drinks trolley?!

JellySlice · 15/08/2018 10:27

We had many of these things. The ones I disliked then, I still dislike now, and the ones I liked then, I still like now!

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 10:28

Oh and we had one of these ghastly front porches too... which was considered very trendy... patio doors.

I think I may have found the tackiest, grimmest but most utterly fabulous item!

This is right up my street!

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 10:30

I wonder if one of the terms for being drunk stems from here... trollied?

Saidthesharktotheflyingfish · 15/08/2018 10:30

I wonder what the next generations will put in the 'tat' of the past threads?

My guesses:
Anything grey
Corner sofas
Clinically white kitchens
Industrial looking anything especially light bulbs
Granite worktops
Kettles that light up

I dont find anything listed in this thread tacky, grim or tat (apart from anything smoking related). It was just 'of its time' and has a certain charm for being that. If you think back a few years, mid-century style sofas would have definitely been on the list, along with anything Ercol related, but now they are considered the height of fashion again.

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 10:33

These were strange too... Not small enough to be a walkman and not big enough to be a raster blaster... just naff...

Having a shower used to mean this grimness

Hahaha

Great thread OP

The joy that was the 70s (sarcasm) in all its Glory Smile

My abiding memory of that decade was TUPPERWARE .
Tupperware Everywhere.

IJustHadToNameChange · 15/08/2018 10:46

All these things are appearing in charity shops.

Over the past few months, I've seen Eternal Beau dinner sets, tea sets, storage jars, cruet sets and a plate warmer.

I've seen radiograms which play 16rpmn, hostess trollies and ice buckets with integral tongs.

Our childhood is dying.....😢

SweetLathyrus · 15/08/2018 10:47

Oldraver, I have to admit, I think your OH might have damned good taste!

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 10:50

When XP and I bought our house in the early 80s, it had an avocado bathroom. He still owns it, but doesn't live there. I wonder if he's had it changed?!

Claw001 · 15/08/2018 10:51

Who can forget the roller skates you had to walk in, like a set of metal high heels!

Seriously tacky and grim...
SweetLathyrus · 15/08/2018 10:52

Torn, I had one of those grim shower attachments until about 2008!

WingMirrorSpider · 15/08/2018 10:52

In our living room in the 70s we had one wall clad entirely in orangey pine tongue and groove Confused

We also had a radiogram (teak) and a wall unit (teak) complete with drop down drinks bar which contained cherry brandy and a bottle of pre mixed sangria someone had brought us back from Spain years earlier.

Does anyone remember the coloured glass ball / fishing floats which were used for decoration? Or the giant brandy glasses with a little pottery mouse in the bottom and a cat trying to get it?

Solomonbitestheworm · 15/08/2018 10:53

Yes to the plastic shower mixer, usually not a good fit and would pop off the taps every 5 minutes Grin thems were the days!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/08/2018 10:55

We had one of those ashtrays! My DF used it and it stank.

WingMirrorSpider · 15/08/2018 10:55

Davros · 15/08/2018 10:56

I love, and remember, all of these. I've got a collection of Top of the Pops records that came in a job lot of vinyl I bought a couple of years ago. I'm hoping they'll make my fortune one day Grin

Solomonbitestheworm · 15/08/2018 10:56

Aww @Claw001 those skate bring back good memories, strap on those bad boys and go break your neck!
