Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

Some things I wish would make a comeback though, like eye level grills.

makingmiracles · 15/08/2018 10:58

HMm, remember these from our house as a kid

Good Christ @WingMirrorSpider my grandma had one of those and I remember wanting it when she died. Never did get it Grin

Jessers · 15/08/2018 11:01

Aww this is reminding me of my late mum's house so much.

Eternal Beau was her favourite.
She had the collection of teaspoons from places she had been.
Drinks cabinet (that only i raided!)- check
Shire horses - check
Glass fish and clowns - check
Big glass with mouse inside with cat trying to get - check
Hifi Cabinet etc etc

God I miss her.

Those Waltham cassette players weren't remotely naff at the time, they were brilliant. They were the best (well actually only) way of recording music you loved and listening to it - especially the charts which you could record and play back endlessly. They didnt need to be smaller as they weren't made to be portable - they were way before walkmans - and didnt need to be bigger or louder as they were usually something you had in your bedroom and used with a couple of friends.

As for the shower connections, I'm with you there. Although they remain a really good way for frail people to sit over a sink and have their hair washed I suppose.

JeffJarrett · 15/08/2018 11:02

I must add, I was very young at the time. The house was covered in brass ornaments too.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/08/2018 11:02

PanPanPing are you from somewhere near there then! I'm originally from Watford! 😆

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/08/2018 11:03

Torn you should start a thread of one liners. 😂

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 11:05

Perfectly. No, we lived near Harrow at the time, but I think that Watford was the only place reasonably nearby that had nightclubs back then!!

MamaLupine · 15/08/2018 11:06

Leesa yes, Tupperware. My mum was always going to Tupperware and Oriflame parties. I thought they were an excuse for a piss-up with the other bored housewives in the neighborhood but no. They really did coo over bowls with lids and blue eyeshadow.

My dad had loads of vinyl LPs with questionable covers. Roxy Music LP covers were filthy.

I remember that god-awful picture loads of people had, 'Wings of Love' or something. Absolutely hideous. And the 'Crying Boy' picture that my nan and her sister were obsessed with talking about as it was cursed and your house would burn down if you had one Hmm.

MamaLupine · 15/08/2018 11:06

This bloody thing

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/08/2018 11:08

periperi we had that coffee table as well, with Torn's ashtray on it.

Badwifey · 15/08/2018 11:08

A lot of that shit is making a comeback...
Drinks trolleys
Hanging plants
Mismatched crap everywhere

WingMirrorSpider · 15/08/2018 11:08

Yes! Wings of love. Sold in Boots for some reason..

PanPanPanPing · 15/08/2018 11:09

Not home decor or objects, but Green Shield Stamps (I hope they haven't already been mentioned) but then you went to the GSS shop to redeem them for something tacky!!

EnormousDormouse · 15/08/2018 11:14

I'm just clearing some boxes of old toys i found at mums. Look at this Sindy poster! Grin

We have a cabinet full of Waterford glass which we had to start collecting after we were given a set of six sherry glasses for a wedding present in 1975. (I was a child bride)
It all cost an absolute bomb, still does, and is never used. No
second-hand value either Sad

IndigoSpritz · 15/08/2018 11:15

You can still buy hostess trolleys, brand new. I wonder if they are as well made as their 70s cousins ? I expect for big families or anyone who entertains a lot, they are jolly useful.

I saw one, perhaps, two drinks globes on the Antiques Roadshow about thirty years ago. John Bly looked them over and decided they were very valuable. Not to my taste but proper old solid wood furniture.

Red soda siphons, or green, are totally kitsch and cool.

Jessers · 15/08/2018 11:18

Just remembered...we had a full wall mural too.

Claw001 · 15/08/2018 11:22

Yes Solo Grin the wheels didn’t move!

I broke my ankle, hanging onto the back of my mates Chopper and being dragged along! The good old days, where you ‘played out’ and went home with a full set of bodily injuries!

Seriously tacky and grim...
TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 11:23

Victoria Wood did wonders for Hostess trolleys (think Hostess was a brand). She probably didn't do much for bad backs though!

Disgrace I think you may be around the same age as me. 👴👵

Claw001 · 15/08/2018 11:33

The cheese and Pineapple, stuck into half a melon and covered in tin foil. A real treat only at Christmas!

Seriously tacky and grim...
Solomonbitestheworm · 15/08/2018 11:40

Amen to playing out Claw and to permanently scabbed knees and elbows!
Oh yes, getting dragged by someone on a bike... jackass in the making!

Shockers · 15/08/2018 11:40

I used to duck tape my cassette recorder to the handlebars of my bike so I could listen to the top 40 and Out of the Blue on long bike rides Grin.
