Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

tierraJ I had stonewashed skinny jeans with ankle zips in 1989. Only they were cropped for normal sized women but fitted my short arsed frame perfectly.

TornFromTheInside · 19/08/2018 20:20

Early 80's there was a craze for dark blue jeans with a single white piping down the outside seam of the legs, but I can't find an image! Can find similar stonewashed, but not normal navy blue denim. They were tight fit back in the day!

You could also get them with pale blue, pink or red piping. My friend had every colour.

I just had red because they were reduced.

TornFromTheInside · 19/08/2018 21:09

YES! you're right. White was the popular colour where I lived in Manchester

My gran used to send us these postcards from her holidays in Spain. The dresses were fabric and sewn on. We thought they were ever so exotic.

My grandma used to carry them home with her because she thought the Spanish postal workers would pinch them Grin

TroysMammy · 19/08/2018 22:07

I used to either wear red or royal blue tights in the 80's. With my skinny legs my Mother told me I looked like Emu Blush.

TornFromTheInside · 19/08/2018 22:14

awww that was cruel!

I used to wear black leggings a lot, my dad said I looked like Max Wall, I thought who the hell is that! Grin

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 19/08/2018 23:03

These the jeans you mean ?

Seriously tacky and grim...
Claw001 · 19/08/2018 23:13

Yes! Piping jeans were kinda like this! I also remember when seams were in the front, we took jeans to the dry cleaners to have seams sewn in the front! Dark blue Lios jeans I think!

I won’t even mention jumbo cords!

Very similar - but piping only down the side and usually darker denim, but essentially just like that yes!

The Ashes to Ashes ones were more authentic!

I had totally forgotten about piping jeans! My age and memory!

Oh my Farah trousers have now sprung to mind!!

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 19/08/2018 23:26

They made farah trousers in the town I grew up in!

I bloody love ashes to ashes!

TornFromTheInside · 19/08/2018 23:28

oh Farah yes, they were popular for a couple of years, with their little 'f' label on the side. There were popular in school because they were normal trousers and could get them in blue or black suitable for school. Same with Kickers shoes.

Claw001 · 19/08/2018 23:41

Anne really, your claim to fame! Where was that? I have no idea! I have a claim to fame too, in school I dated a boy with a famous step dad!! Woo!

torn yes! School trousers, Farahs were all the rage. In my school even girls could wear them, as they came in burgundy! Liberated! Trousers for girls!

TornFromTheInside · 19/08/2018 23:46

I don't think trousers for girls were allowed in my school. I certainly don't remember it.

Slazenger jumpers were a big deal for boys and girls.

Claw001 · 19/08/2018 23:55

We were only allowed to wear burgundy trousers. A big ask, no one made burgundy trousers back then, until Farahs! Farahs, kickers and v neck gabicci burgundy jumper, bow blouse you were the dogs!

Claw001 · 19/08/2018 23:57

A dogs dinner now, looking back. The dogs b’s at the time!

TornFromTheInside · 19/08/2018 23:59

It was ties for us boys... from huge wide ones, to sleek thin ones, always inventing new ways to 'beat' the uniform rules!

OP posts:
Claw001 · 20/08/2018 00:09

Girls never wore a tie or a blazer. I remember boys always had to ask permission to take their blazer off? Did you? Bizarre as girls didn’t, to remove their knock off Burberrys from the market! Grin

We also discovered culottes, are they a skirt, are they trousers ha ha!

TornFromTheInside · 20/08/2018 00:16

Can't recall on the blazer - but since I do recall lots of jumpers, I think it was shirt, optional jumper and blazer were the norm.
I do recall tying the arms of my jumper around waist and having jumper like a half skirt over my bum - that was how most lads wore them in the summer (but probably only on break).

It's all a very long time ago!
