I have never watched John Porter, Boden. I would find it too nasty and upsetting. I found Mr Thornton's beating of the man caught smoking in the mill traumatic enough.

I think you have to study all his personae fully. JP is heroic and manly. Couple of gruesome bits but not too bad. Actually the main gruesome bit is a particularly dodge hairdo at one point
