The twaddle continues ......

Yes, the Clarissa song is quite erotic. The first four lines especially. And Nard is a perfume that was burned on the fire and associated with a bride's wedding night. It is short for spikesnard which is what Mary Magdalene used to annoint the feet of Jesus at The Last Supper.

I believe Sting has recorded a version of this song.

RL called me away for a bit but just you try and have a 4th thread without me :) ie. yes, I'm in :) I probably shouldn't spend quite as much time here as I have (poor DS neglected a bit durign day, let alone DH!) but am in for the long haul if you are!

Gosh you lot really are very well read. Puts me to shame. I did A level Eng Lit but never really took it any further and always regretted my limited reading - so it's nice to feel cultured again :)

PrairieOyster · 16/11/2010 19:39

RA lines I love from Clarissa:

Yes, I am your protector.

The impolite charmer!

:o

MrsLucasNorth · 16/11/2010 19:56

Well researched Oyster - but couldn't listen to it all with Sting performing tbh, although I like some his other stuff.

Might have a butchers for a more authentic version on Spotify later.

Right am back to RL for a bit. Will come and find you later if you've moved onto thread 4 by then!

PrairieOyster · 16/11/2010 20:01

Theresa, very perceptive comment you made earlier on the thread about Lovelace's skillful acting, because the book makes it clear that he is acting: he tells Clarissa what she wants to hear at times, acts remorseful about his career of dueling and seduction when he in fact glories in it, and so on. She does see through him at times. In one of her early letters she writes "I saw something low and selfish in his love."

StripeyMoon · 16/11/2010 20:02

Who is doing the new thread?

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 16/11/2010 20:07

Oooh. Are we listening to the lute? This is . Clarissa might well have heard it.

OP posts:
MrsLucasNorth · 16/11/2010 20:14

I think it's me Stripey - am trying to find something suitable as a threadwarming pressing Grin

Oyster - the Lovelace fanfic was v. saucy. I made the mistake of scrolling onto some others though and came across one featuring Guy & Lucas...Shock

PrairieOyster · 16/11/2010 20:25

Yes, I skipped the Guy and Lucas one too!!! I did warn you!!! Perhaps the warning was not strong enough though! Most of her stuff is not like that, and she is a very nice lady.

MrsLucasNorth · 16/11/2010 20:29

I got the drift of it and hastily came back over here - I don't think i'd have slept if i'd kept reading.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 16/11/2010 20:34

Prairie - That's what I meant about never being sure of the extent to which Lovelace is dissembling and feigning love.

So, who's going down to the archive to retrieve tonight's study material?

OP posts:
PrairieOyster · 16/11/2010 20:38

Has anyone seen

The Impressionists?

40deniertights · 16/11/2010 20:38

More sterling work ladies. Is there anyone who has not burnt a dinner over the past couple of weeks? Which is your favourite video academic study material?

40deniertights · 16/11/2010 20:39

No, but did catch the Marie LLoyd thing. Not the best look from the selection, but still not bad. Must learn to do links and contribute.

MrsLucasNorth · 16/11/2010 20:45

New thread over here when this one finishes...

University of Armitage Studies

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 16/11/2010 20:51

I posted a clip of the Impressionists a day or two ago, but the reception was lukewarm, at best. Seems that the Victorian gentleman is a minority taste. Something I find inexplicable.

OP posts:
40deniertights · 16/11/2010 21:49

No, that Victorian gentleman is more than fine Wink

Theresaholeinyourmind · 16/11/2010 21:59

So where are we, here or there?

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 16/11/2010 22:02

Indeed he is! I have always admired a .

We seem to be in two places at once. Someone tore a hole in the space-time continuum.

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 16/11/2010 22:15

I keep telling you about alternate universes
Come out, Good Lucas, we need you!

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 16/11/2010 22:24

See, I have been listening.

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 16/11/2010 22:28

Oooh, I do like this new Doctor Who. Another one with an attractive Northern accent.

Enter Dalek stage left

EXTERMINATE!!!

stops and considers.

No wait,I have a better idea

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 16/11/2010 22:31

And also, an attractive lock of hair flopping onto his (slightly too boyish for my taste) forehead. Can you spot a theme here?
