The twaddle continues ......

I'm with you there, MrsLN. Is there anyone better at, ahem, aural seduction than Mr Armitage? It's a measure of his gifts that I have to remind myself repeatedly that Lovelace is reprehensible.

Hello, it's been a while and I'm amazed at this thread being so long again...and even has fanfic!!!!

By the way someone mentioned there was a published author who got started writing North and South fanfic after viewing the adaptation in 2004 - well that's true, in fact there are at least five I know of - including Rosy Thornton, Elizabeth Hanbury, Elizabeth Ashworth, Georgia Hill and Phillipa Ashley. Incredible isn't it!!

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 14/11/2010 18:50

Hello again, PrairieOyster. Well, it turned out that this is a huge area of study with quite a number of dedicated scholars. Do you have a specialism?

Mr Thornton belongs to me by the way.

I think that Dorcas was very well played in that adaptation. Would be quite interested to read the book and see if the character is more developed. I wondered if she was the 'madam's secret daughter, which was why they kept her on when no one else would have her.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 14/11/2010 18:55

Yes, Dorcas is truly a tragic character. I hadn't thought of her being the madam's daughter, but that's an intriguing thought. And of course Sally was a girl Lovelace had used and discarded and had been taken into the fold.

OP posts:
MrsLucasNorth · 14/11/2010 19:00

I maybe completely wide of the mark, but when Sally asks her why she keeps Dorcas on she doesn't reply, and seems quite distressed when she finds Dorcas in chapter 4.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 14/11/2010 19:07

I think you may be on to something. I assumed Mrs Sinclair simply felt sorry for her because she was too plain to be anything apart from a maid in a brothel - and this act of charity was Mrs Sinclair's one redeeming feature - but perhaps there is more to it than that.

PrairieOyster · 14/11/2010 19:08

Dorcas was an interesting character but I think that her fate (don't want to give anything away) was an invention of the scriptwriter.

I'm afraid I don't have a specialism, I'm a generalist!!! There are quite a few scholars around - and I am definitely one of them, my studies to date have encompassed Robin Hood, North and South, Spooks, Sparkhouse, The Impressionists, six audiobooks, one radioplay, a few documentaries, several poems and numerous adverts. Actually the poems are a favourite of mine - have you heard the recent ones done for Radio 3 Words and Music? I am afraid I am committed (or is that I should be committed?)

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 14/11/2010 19:14

That is some very serious study. My own have been very lightweight in comparison. Now, those Words and Music poems have been controversial here. I liked them - especially the William Carlos Williams - but the pressing and existential question dividing the academic community here is: Mr Armitage with an American accent, yay or nay?

With Clarissa, it's so long since I read the book that I have no strong sense of what is original Richardson and what is Scriptwriter. Hence the need to re-read. >

So MrsLucasNorth - you are on Twitter??? Me too - there's a whole #Spooks crowd on there - I wonder if I'm following you??? Mysterious...

Bodenbabe · 14/11/2010 19:18

Just a quickie, ladies (am supposed to be bathing the small ones) but MrsLN, S7 is £10.99 at amazon...

LeQ, you are bang on with the assertiveness being part of the attraction. That's what gets me about Lucas.

PrairieOyster · 14/11/2010 19:18

Yes - the American accent - I thought it was passable - I think that the Americans amongst the RA crowd gave him a score of around 70% - good effort and not at all bad for a first try - his pronounciation of 'hot dog' makes me laugh!! I just find it very strange hearing him talk like that!!!

PrairieOyster · 14/11/2010 19:20

Bodenbabe, I just ordered Spooks S7 off Amazon - been waiting a year for the price to come down - finally!!!!

Bodenbabe · 14/11/2010 19:24

Prairie, I am on Twitter but he ignores me :( He has his regulars, I wonder if you are one of those :) We find him too schoolboyish and obvious lately anyway...

I didn't like the accent - very cringeworthy, for me. Besides, I like him to sound like him.

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 14/11/2010 19:27

'Tis strange. Since he went over to The Other Side, Lucas has reverted to being about fourteen. But he did respond to my tweet.

OP posts:
PrairieOyster · 14/11/2010 19:46

I may be guilty of being a regular!! He responds to me sometimes for sure - try staring....!!! He does it all the time!!! I possibly have more luck with @SirGuyGisborne !!! Also I even had a PM from @SirHJPearce once!!!

I feel rather self-conscious to mention my twitter name here unfortunately...

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 14/11/2010 19:48

Oh go on. You're amongst friends. It's not like it's public or anything.

OP posts:
Bodenbabe · 14/11/2010 19:55

Sir HArry has responded to me (called me 'madam', which amused me no end - I love how they are in character) but Lucas has only responded to me twice... (just as well, I guess, or DH would be fed up :) )

Bodenbabe · 14/11/2010 19:57

John Porter is on there too but he scares me a bit.

MrsLucasNorth · 14/11/2010 20:04

Have you seen Strikeback though, Bodenbabe? I am halfway through the 2nd episode and John Porter is quite fab. Kind of Action Man Lucas with a fully functioning moral compass - yummy!

MrsLucasNorth · 14/11/2010 20:06

Bodenbabe & Prairie - who are you on Twitter? I'm womblingfree1 (my old mumsnetter name)

PrairieOyster · 14/11/2010 20:06

Aw, John Porter is a sweetie!!! He's given me a few hugs!! Actually I did get a hug from @Lucas_North I seem to remember now!! I had a bad day...

PrairieOyster · 14/11/2010 20:11

MrsLucasNorth

Ah yes, my studies have also encompased Strike Back - how could I forget the lovely JP!!

I hesitate to mention my twitter name here, but I'll follow you, if you like and then you will know the awful truth of it!!!!

MrsLucasNorth · 14/11/2010 20:15

Prairie - the inkblot test in episode 1 of strikeback made me Pmsl - I literally spat my wine out with shock/hysterics! How he played that with a straight face I'll never know....

Haven't had a direct reply from Lucas yet, although he did take me up on my potters wheel suggestion the other day which wad nice Grin.

PrairieOyster · 14/11/2010 20:20

Ah yes - the scene from Ghost - I saw some references to that...

There was one day when he stripped and ate food from the fridge - that was pretty amazing!!!

The ink blot test - yes well...

Have you got to Episode 5 yet - there's an incident with a sofa that's pretty funny!
