The twaddle continues ......

OP posts:

It was indeed, Mrs LN. Mr Thornton was lovely in it, though I could wish Margaret would get herself a new hat. Maybe it's the BBC wardrobe department that's at fault. There were some real shockers in Larkrise to Candleford

Well, I made a big mistake late last night and decided to listen to Clarissa at last.
Never ever do that, especially in the dark, it's wonder the place wasn't consumed by a fireball. Part 3 when you're half asleep is not recommended for ladies of a delicate disposition. O....M....G

But, leaving the swoon and thud factor aside, no wonder the reviews of all RH's audio books is so good. The range of tone and depth of feeling he puts into his performance is incredible. Am I prejudiced when I say we have a potentially great actor on our hands?

Finally before I sneak off and spend some time with Lucas North on the big telly screen, I am struck anew by my reactions to Mr Lovelace. It is against all my principles to be condoning his actions and yet I find myself lapping it all up. Shame on me, shame!

Teri says hi and CUL8R You have to love her. After all, she prefers all this to the Twilight stuff

Theresaholeinyourmind · 14/11/2010 09:36

PS Mrs LN I hope you and yours are okay now.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 14/11/2010 09:42

Let me leave you with a bit of culture -- some very

Theresaholeinyourmind · 14/11/2010 09:49

And

MrsLucasNorth · 14/11/2010 09:56

Dd still coughing but ok in self, thanks.
I know what you mean about Lovelace. If i'd been around 250 years ago he could have had me and saved himself all the effort!
Did you think Clarissa herself was a bit melodramatic generally?

40deniertights · 14/11/2010 10:37

I have been giving the matter of future roles some thought. I think that something set in Ancient Rome would be just the ticket. A screenplay opportunity for you Mrs LN?

Fingers crossed the cough soon goes, Mrs LN.

Clarissa? Another stupid girl, is what I think of her. Her excuse is she is not as aware as we are of the gorgeousness of this particular Lovelace. That voice right at the end of Part Three! I practically expired.

Maybe, given the fact that your own family was so vile to her would make you be prone to shrillness and going off on one. And maybe that was how well brought-up young girls were meant to react in Richardson's day, when faced with losing their virtue. Which was the most saleable property of maidens in those days, along with any inheritances they might have of course.
,
I found myself often thinking that the actress was doing a bit of scenery chewing. Perhaps that is what you meant too,

40DT, Ancient Rome is good, the costumes are so yummy. The togas, the tunics, the sexy military uniforms. What should it be, something original or Shakespeare? I know we at the Academy are partial to a nice bit of culture.

Just watched Spooks 8.1 and the dreaded Sarah has hoved into view. Not a lot of Lucas in this ep, but some nice shots.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 14/11/2010 11:18

I was thinking Mark Anthony too. How would he look in a Roman haircut, would you say, LeQueen?

40deniertights · 14/11/2010 11:20

Tbh I think an original effort might work Theresa, more control over proceedings. Obvs the costume element had occurred to me already, plenty of action also!

Theresaholeinyourmind · 14/11/2010 11:20

Got my pronouns mixed in that Clarissa post
''so vile to her ''should read ''so vile to you'.

Bodenbabe · 14/11/2010 11:42

Loving the romantic side of GTN, MrsLN. Can't wait to see how it all turns out! I'm going to take a wild guess here and assume that Cassie is going to have some fun? I do hope so, she deserves it :) Are you taking requests? 'Cos if so, I always think that a man with an undone bow tie really has that wow factor...

Theresa, ooooh, I need to hear Clarissa!!! Am intrigued now!

A It's not a very good vid (though I love the song, showing my age!) and the 'special' effects are awfully annoying but have a little gander at the pic at 1'12...

Theresaholeinyourmind · 14/11/2010 12:58

Boden, you should definitely hear Clarissa. It's the stuff of your naughtiest and most irresponsable dreams. You can download it to your computer, that's what I did, as I don't have an iPod. Just hooked myself up with some earphones and Bob was, well certainly not my uncle Grin That voice in my head in the dark, oh lordy...

Yes, love the cello, now there would be a treat. What would Robin Hood play do you think? My vote is for the ukelele.

On my Spooks session, Lucas has just left for Claridges. What do we think about Claridges? Luxurious but a bit touristy? Me, I might plump for something out at Canary Wharf. At night the views from the top floors are magical. Only thing that would make them even better would be to share with someone equally magical.

MrsLucasNorth · 14/11/2010 13:18

Bodenbabe - bear in mind you need to leave your feminist principles at the door to enjoy Clarissa, but when you hear 'the voice' it's not that difficult! Grin

Is 'Sparkhouse' worth watching LeQ? I love Wuthering Heights, which I believe it's based on, but haven't been able to get past the hair and jumpers yet!

MrsLucasNorth · 14/11/2010 17:11

PS Series 7 of Spooks is only 16.99 from play.com at the mo...Wink

Oh LeQ - you really shouldn't have mentioned unzipping while I'm cooking the roast. There's bound to be injuries Grin!

ASmallBunchofFlowers · 14/11/2010 17:52

Oh thank you for the gift, Bodenbabe. I remember that song but it has always made me vom, so hadn't watched the vid to the end. How foolish was I? And thank you too for the gratuitous Bond dinner jacket shot. I must say that Mr Craig as Bond in Casino Royale is one of the most delicious things I've seen. It used to be one of my ironing dvds until I discovered North and South.

And as for Clarissa. If she had succumbed willingly to Lovelace - or more to the point if she hadn't wasted away and died and he hadn't been killed in the duel - then surely they would both have ended up dying of syphilis which is what I assume his friend, who had led (we were told) a far less debauched lifestyle, dies of? I'm too dull and sensible to agree that he was gorgeous. Mad, bad and dangerous to know, yes. Alluringly, thrillingly handsome, yes. But too selfish and too calculating ever to be truly gorgeous. And as for the argument that he wouldn't have needed to rape her if only she'd consented. Words fail me.

Yes to all things Roman. I've already told you about the scene in My Bad Boy Byron in which Byron method-writes the Dying Gladiator in full Roman fig. You heard it here first.

Theresa - I was struck in Lonely by the pathos of

Why do you work for him?

I have nobody.

Now, I think it's a few days since we studied this so it's probably time for a critical re-evaulation.

OP posts:
ASmallBunchofFlowers · 14/11/2010 18:34

LeQ - You're right about Mr Thornton's appeal. And with it there is the extra frisson of coming to appreciate that his bad boy exterior is really not that bad. He reacts so violently to the man smoking because he is acutely aware (having seen 300 mill workers burnt to death) of the dangers of fire, he is determined to break the strike because he is conscious of how many people's livelihood depends on the mill and fears bankruptcy, he pays for Boucher's child to go to school and starts the canteen etc. So through love he finds redemption.

This isn't true for Lucas/John, though, where we eventually learn that he is far more of a bad man than we at first hoped or thought.

MrsLucasNorth · 14/11/2010 18:41

Flowers - you are of course right about Lovelace, but as much as my head thinks he's a nasty piece of work, it tends to get overruled by my hormones every time I listen to him. I'm sure if it was anyone else reading it I'd be completely outraged but I have very selective hearing where Mr A is concerned!
