Name changed but I’ve seen 2 threads about fish and chips tonight - I have a chippy (away hence not working) AMA

OP posts:
wineschmine · 11/08/2023 22:48

How did you get into it? Are you from a chippy family?

wineschmine · 11/08/2023 22:49

Ohmylovejune · 11/08/2023 19:30

When I was little there used to be the potato scallop. Slice of potato battered..they were yummy but I never see them.now. have you heard of them?

Do you mean a fritter?

Ohmylovejune · 11/08/2023 22:58

I don't know we called them scallops!

Why do some chippys leave the skin on the fish? It's horrible.

This!! I love fish and chips but only skin off, otherwise it’s like getting an unwanted slimy, tough addition…. Other than cost, is there a reason for this?

Weatherwax · 11/08/2023 19:14

Wherw are you based (North or south, no need for specifics!) And do you sell scraps? I love them, but they seem to be a northern thing only. If you are southern, have you trialled them?

We have chippies in the Midlands you know

SleepingStandingUp · 11/08/2023 23:10

So you serve orange chips? If not, why not?

Yes, same here they were absolutely gorgeous! not seen them for years though.

Failingatthemoment · 11/08/2023 23:33

Do you sell cake and chips ( piece of fish sandwiched between two thick slices of potato, then deep fried in batter)?. Also went to a chippy once and they sold two types of curry sauce - wasn't sure, but the type i picked was RANK!
And do you do haddock and plaice and specials ( larger fish)?

MysteryBelle · 11/08/2023 23:35

Why can’t I make a delicious fish and chippy at home? I’ve tried. I’m in USA and no chippies so please help us poor outcasts.

Illdoittommorow · 11/08/2023 23:37

Why can't we have proper vinegar instead of 'non-brewed condiment'.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 11/08/2023 23:41

itsfridayitschippyteanight · 11/08/2023 19:24

Yes it means that we can’t say the chips are veggie

No!! Another thing I have on my conscience. I have been veggie for 40 years. I didn't know for the longest time that parmesan wasnt veggie, so I still eat parmesan. But I always thought the chips were cooked in their own fryer and not mixed with the fish fryer. So now if I order chips - I'll have to accept that's fish oil?! So you dont offer breaded mushrooms - that is a cracking veggie option. Prefer to a veggie burger - which I will not have. PS fabulous AMA - so interesting. My local fish & hippie (typo - I mean chippie but almost prefer hippie!) used to win awards (SE) but gosh the cost now. Son eats well - but a large F&C - £10/11

Why does no one make a pineapple fritter anymore?

Battered pineapple

I remember those - they were lovely!

GirlOfTudor · 11/08/2023 23:46

I've thoroughly enjoyed this thread. I might head out for a battered sausage and chips this weekend!

My local (otherwise excellent) chippy doesn't make pineapple fritters, but the Chinese takeaway does...

They definitely do! A chippy I visited up north even had battered bananas!

I like them too , you can still get them round here in the North west of England.
Scallop barm and a bit of curry sauce 😛

EconomyClassRockstar · 11/08/2023 23:51

Are they scraps or scrumps? Either way, they are the best part of the meal.

ScottBakula · 11/08/2023 23:52

WellThisIsFun1 · 11/08/2023 19:53

@EldenRing3 it's not a recipe as such but here goes:

You need dry mashed potato that's been allowed to go cold. None of your creamy mash nonsense, just well mashed plain spuds.

Get a tin of corned beef, mash that up too and mix it into the potato.

Get a big white onion and grate it (keep all the juice). Dump that in the potato mix.

Then you need ground white pepper (lots of it, and never black pepper) and some salt.

When fully mixed get some beaten eggs and packet breadcrumbs ready.

Roll the mixture into balls about the size of a tennis ball. Roll in the egg and then roll in the breadcrumbs.

Deep fry until golden and crispy.

>>adds all items and a bottle of oil to the shopping list<<<

Ohmylovejune · 11/08/2023 23:58

@ScottBakula

Right, I'm selling up and moving up North!

ScottBakula · 12/08/2023 00:06

@Ohmylovejune , let me know when your 15 minutes away and I will go and order them ( made fresh every time ) 😁

wildthingsinthenight · 12/08/2023 00:08

This is the best AMA I've seen.😁
I'm never interested in them usually.
I am very hungry now though!

This is one of the best AMA in ages. Genuinely very interested in all the answers.

Here is one, I am from Lancashire and as a regional thing our chippies gave you "pea wet" (if you were a cash strapped teen and couldn't afford mushy peas) Pea wet is the juice left from preparing the peas to make mushy peas I believe.

Did you know about this if you are not from The North?

Also how many different names for a butty do you get asked for? I personally check the menu to see what they call it if I am visiting somewhere. Bap, barm, teacake, butty, roll?

Peawet! Pronounced pey wet where I'm from!
God this thread is bringing back memories of when I was a sixth former working in a chippy in Wigan.

wildthingsinthenight · 12/08/2023 00:11

East Midlands.. never heard of pea wet!

WhateverMate · 12/08/2023 00:14

See I'm hugely disappointed in the OP's short, vague answers 😳

"Have you won any awards?" - "Yes"

"Has any famous people used your chippy?" - "Yes, loads"

It's like reading a survey 😂
