Name changed but I’ve seen 2 threads about fish and chips tonight - I have a chippy (away hence not working) AMA

What's the best bit about the job?

And the hardest?

Highdaysandholidays1 · 11/08/2023 19:22

I love this AMA!

How many days do you work yourself on weeks you are working?

Are you planning to stay in fish and chips til retirement?

AvengedQuince · 11/08/2023 19:23

No it’s very limiting

Do you mean because some people are vegetarian or in other ways? The nearest seed oil free fish and chips I've found is an hour away 😔.

The customers are generally lovely, we’re quite flexible as we have a manger and can pick and choose working hours

Yes it means that we can’t say the chips are veggie

Is there such a thing as a mushy pea fritter? Often thought it would be a good vegan option. With battered onion rings and mushrooms. Chip shop tempura…

Yes there is!!! They are a southern thing. I love near London now and never found a chippy to sell them since 😭

Meadowdog · 11/08/2023 19:25

Is there any cornstarch or maize starch in anything you sell? DH is intolerant but often doesn’t ask (he says he forgets but I think he just doesn’t like drawing attention to himself) and then gets an upset stomach if he accidentally has it.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/08/2023 19:25

What variety of potato do you use and has anyone famous been in your chippy?

BurnerPhone · 11/08/2023 19:25

What's with the shaky back and forth scoop maneuver when portioning the chips?! Every chippy does it!

Can't beat a good chippy

I don’t really work that much any more - more admin and stuff. And yes but probably won’t really retire

How much do you make a year from running a chip shop?

Changes constantly - depends on availability. And yes loads

I’m really sorry I’ve got to go out now - didn’t think anyone would be this interested! I will catch up tomorrow 🐠 🍟

This was really interesting. Thanks for all the replies

Darkandstormynite · 11/08/2023 19:28

Don't want to answer my question then 😂

BlartFast · 11/08/2023 19:29

Do you smell greasy?

DanceMumTaxi · 11/08/2023 19:30

Do you just do traditional chippy things (chips, fish, sausage, pie etc) or do you do Chinese, kebabs, pizza, burgers and so on too? I’m from Birmingham originally and our chippy’s were just that but where I live now they do everything. I find it so strange.

Ohmylovejune · 11/08/2023 19:30

When I was little there used to be the potato scallop. Slice of potato battered..they were yummy but I never see them.now. have you heard of them?

Missrabbithasfainted · 11/08/2023 19:31

Can we see a picture of the fish and chips you sell?!

Darkacademic · 11/08/2023 19:32

Loved reading this, thank you!

They have them in all the chippys where I’m from (Liverpool). And I often get a portion instead of chips

Soggycushion · 11/08/2023 19:33

If you're away, have yiubhad fish and chips for supper yet?

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 11/08/2023 19:33

faban · 11/08/2023 19:18

This is the first AMA where I'm dying to know the answer to everything

Me too!!!

Soggycushion · 11/08/2023 19:33

you had

WellThisIsFun1 · 11/08/2023 19:33

Do you sell rissoles?

Chippy staple in Wales where I grew up, I was looked at like I had two heads when I asked for one in England!

Ps if you need the recipe let me know, a Welsh rissole is a thing of beauty
