Name changed but I’ve seen 2 threads about fish and chips tonight - I have a chippy (away hence not working) AMA

OP posts:
BlackForestCake · 11/08/2023 21:05

All the people asking if chippies make a lot of money: Have you seen the price of energy recently? Do you think it's cheap to get a huge vat of oil up to frying temperature?

(I have no connection to the chippy trade)

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/08/2023 21:12

Loving this OP, thank you!

SerendipityJane · 11/08/2023 21:13

Personally I love fish that has been left in the cabinet with soggy batter, and chips that have been left a while so gone a bit soft.

Sadly all our chippys only seem to cook fish to order nowadays. Which means I've not had fish from a chippy for years. And I miss rock salmon.

CoatOfTheWest · 11/08/2023 21:16

This is one of the best AMA in ages. Genuinely very interested in all the answers.

Here is one, I am from Lancashire and as a regional thing our chippies gave you "pea wet" (if you were a cash strapped teen and couldn't afford mushy peas) Pea wet is the juice left from preparing the peas to make mushy peas I believe.

Did you know about this if you are not from The North?

Also how many different names for a butty do you get asked for? I personally check the menu to see what they call it if I am visiting somewhere. Bap, barm, teacake, butty, roll?

Waffle78 · 11/08/2023 21:22

Do you do battered Mars bars? I love them only one chippy where I live does them

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/08/2023 21:23

I miss northern chippies now i live in the west midlands.

Order as a teenager with no money... scallop barm with peawet and scraps on. Crunchy, crispy, soft, yes yes yes.

OooohAhhhh · 11/08/2023 21:27

Do you change your oil often? Nothing worse than horrible brown chips cooked in old oil.

Meowandthen · 11/08/2023 21:32

OooohAhhhh · 11/08/2023 21:35

@Meowandthen yes quite right, I meant in chippy land

How old are the eggs in the pickled eggs jar?

i was actually thinking this the other day 🤣

HolyMoleyGuacamole · 11/08/2023 21:45

Whereabouts is your shop?

MrsR87 · 11/08/2023 21:59

Do you skin the fish before frying?

FrostieBoabby · 11/08/2023 22:01

Do you ask folk if they want salt and vinegar or salt and sauce? Seems to be a regional thing.

Also, is it fish and chips or a fish supper?

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 11/08/2023 22:03

Have you tried everything on the menu?

Whats the most underrated thing on the menu?

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 11/08/2023 22:05

How much profit roughly do you make?

How did you start?
Did you work there and then bought it off the current owners, had you worked in a chippy before etc?

(Sorry for the personal questions but it’s a business my brother has always wanted to do but I don’t know if it’s financially viable).

macaroonsandgin · 11/08/2023 22:17

fettuccini · 11/08/2023 20:15

No questions. I just want to tell you I absolutely love pickled eggs and am gutted my lil cal chippy has stopped selling them! I once ate 5 pickled eggs in a row and had to go and have a lie down from the buzz!

This made me laugh out a large mouthful of tea 😂

Brilliant thread OP, hope we get to hear more

Anon9898 · 11/08/2023 22:29

Why does no one make a pineapple fritter anymore?

Battered pineapple

cozycat1 · 11/08/2023 22:29

Have you ever worked out the fat and calories content of your suppers as per eg McDonald's? I had a single fish and mushy peas from chippy tonight and it was delish.curois to know just how fattening it might be...

gemjar81 · 11/08/2023 22:35

@Robinbuildsbears my local does them, I'll post you some 🤪

HolyMoleyGuacamole · 11/08/2023 22:35

Do you serve cod roe? 🤢

ssd · 11/08/2023 22:36

Do you realise we don't get scraps in Scotland!!

Worse thing about living here

retiringinthedeepend · 11/08/2023 22:37

AMA but not answering any of the questions about money/profits...

feralunderclass · 11/08/2023 22:38

What's the recipe for batter please?

CitadelOfChaos · 11/08/2023 22:41

Thank you, hope you are enjoying your holiday.

Pea fritters - in Portsmouth they are a ball, elsewhere a 'burger' or non existent.
By the power of Mumsnet could we map them. DH has been clocking regional differences for decades on our holidays.

beeonmybonnett · 11/08/2023 22:48

Do you make a good profit out of it? Once you’ve paid all the utility bills, food and your staff etc plus all your own personal bills at home, do you have a good amount of disposable income?
