Name changed but I’ve seen 2 threads about fish and chips tonight - I have a chippy (away hence not working) AMA

OP posts:
TickTickTock · 11/08/2023 20:21

Our local one closed years ago and the building is still empty. Fancy opening another? 😜

Hibiscrubbed · 11/08/2023 20:25

Nine months pregnant and after reading this thread, would merrily sacrifice my husband at the alter of fish and child. I NEED some. Lots of salt and vinegar.

Hibiscrubbed · 11/08/2023 20:25

Fish and chips. Unfortunate typo.

We only go with suppliers who have a sustainability accreditation. It’s mainly caught in Iceland and frozen at sea

This reply makes me feel better I will make sure I ask before ordering. The thought of eating British fish at the moment makes me want to gag.

Do you sell rissoles?

Chippy staple in Wales where I grew up, I was looked at like I had two heads when I asked for one in England!

Ps if you need the recipe let me know, a Welsh rissole is a thing of beauty

Can confirm this is still a thing. Love them.

hennaoj · 11/08/2023 20:32

Why do some chippys leave the skin on the fish? It's horrible.

Ridemeginger · 11/08/2023 20:37

What do you think of that episode of Spooks, where the (chip shop owning) villain pushes the agent's head into the deep fat fryer? Traumatising as a professional in the trade, or inspirational vis a vis unpleasant customers?

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 11/08/2023 20:42

Do you sell spam fritters? I adore them, but those ones you put in the oven don’t cut it. Would you be offended if somebody bought a tin of spam in and asked you to batter them, and charge the same as you would for a battered sausage?

twizzletops · 11/08/2023 20:44

What day of the week is the fish typically delivered? I've had cod on different days from the same chip shop. On some days, the flesh appears grey and old as though it's been at the bottom of the freezer for months. Other times, it's white, fluffy and fresher tasting.

SalviaDivinorum · 11/08/2023 20:46

Do you use sodium metabisuphite on your chips?

Pandaflop · 11/08/2023 20:47

itsfridayitschippyteanight · 11/08/2023 19:00

I don’t know I refuse to sell them for that very reason

You're missing a trick! DHs brother owns a chippy and they turn a nice profit for little effort- never had to chuck them out as they sell before that needs to happen (just write the date on the lid and make sure to do it as part of shift checks!).

When you say you're innovative with the menu- what do you sell?

PrinceYakimov · 11/08/2023 20:50

Best AMA ever!!!

roterkolonist · 11/08/2023 20:50

What's your favourite fish to eat, and to fry?

Justanotherlurker · 11/08/2023 20:50

If you only read headlines it is probably why, looks like you have never heard of the cod wars, or more recently around european access to british waters after brexit....

Still, the meme of 'shit being pumped into our seas' though... have to get those ideological dinner table wins, obviously based on no actual knowledge...

Meowandthen · 11/08/2023 20:50

Do you stock pickled eggs and if so how often to do you sell one?

I have never seen one ordered and don’t know anyone who eats them. I have long suspected that the jars are purely decorative.

Your shop sounds great BTW.

WiddlinDiddlin · 11/08/2023 20:51

What is the secret to the orange crispy chips one can only get in the Black Country - and I am about 10 miles too far away to make it reasonable to go there so have never tried but they look AMAZING.

Is the scampi wholetail or reformed - or mixed reformed and white fish? I can do wholetail but not the other versions for some reason!

Scraps - are they a pain to make on purpose, why do some places sell them and some look at you like you're a filthpig for asking!

grizzlygrice22 · 11/08/2023 20:52

WHEYYY GET ME A BATTERED HADDOCK AND CHIPS LIKE

EldenRing3 · 11/08/2023 20:53

How early do you get up to prepare everything?

EvenlyDetermined · 11/08/2023 20:54

Do chips shops still stay closed on Mondays because of no fresh fish?

nocoolnamesleft · 11/08/2023 20:55

Is Friday still the busiest day?

Tess3 · 11/08/2023 20:57

Potato scallops, they're still a big thing in chippys here in the Northern of Ireland, well Belfast mostly. I'm from the country and never had heard of them till i moved to the city 😆

Oneweektogo2023 · 11/08/2023 20:58

My local chippy is excellent. Always busy. Do you make loads of money?

willWillSmithsmith · 11/08/2023 21:00

BreadInCaptivity · 11/08/2023 19:11

Isn't the point of chip shop chips that should be somewhat soggy (and showered in vinegar)?

I like the soggy chip shop chips.

willWillSmithsmith · 11/08/2023 21:02

It took me years to forget that, thanks for reminding me 😬🥴
