'Those who have lived as men, with all the privileges that entails, do not have the shared experience of growing up female.'

Brave and interesting article in the Times.

Link here behind pay wall I think

Yes I just read that, it's almost as if she read Mumsnet....

I've not seen any social media backlash yet, perhaps too early?

Haven't read the article but will buy the Times later to do so. Well done Jenni.

Nothing on Twitter. It's almost as if.. she's got away with it!

She is brave, well done her. Not surprised though after so many years covering all the experiences of so many women.

I've just watched this (well half way through) and it really illustrates what it's like growing up female for a Nigerian. She tells so many poignant stories.

Shame there's a pay wall. I can't read it, but those who aren't subscribers will only read her main statement without any of her reasoning and label her transphobic.

Brief discussion on the BBC this morning, basically Edwina Curry saying that it's OK as she has a trans woman as a friend and they are lovely and can be whatever they want. Also that there is no "one type of women" (which is right, but a feminine man is NOT a woman - only women are). Feminine = men or women. Female and Male = biology, with or without play at being feminine.

Also news anchors saying that trans women have gone through trauma - so that's alright then - lets ignore encroachment of women's space and our natural instinct at detecting and keeping a distance from men who may be in the middle of a fetish fantasy.

Well done Jenni

At last some common sense from someone on the BBC who can see the emperor has no clothes.

I don't think they'll dare to sack her. Much as the fuckers will want to.

AskBasil Sun 05-Mar-17 08:53:25

I wonder when "they've gone through trauma" became "that means they're women".

I've gone through trauma, doesn't mean I've become French, or male, or a cat.

I'm still biologically the same, trauma or not.

Jenni is a journalistic juggernaut, they can't touch her. I'm so glad and grateful for her stance on this.

Autumntactics Sun 05-Mar-17 08:58:19

It's a really well reasoned article and talks about male privilege from birth, e.g. Transwomen dominating conversations because that's what they grew up being used to as boys.

Very heartening to see this although shame the article can't be shared more freely. She often does a fab job gently but fairly challenging things in a neutral way on WH, but never really stating her own opinion.

Thankyou Jenni for 'coming out' as a rational person and standing up for women, common sense, scientific fact and truth.

I expect WH might be a bit more exciting than usual this week!

AskBasil Sun 05-Mar-17 08:58:58

Oh sock it to 'em Jenni.

She's understood what so many MtT do: that all they're doing is "simply playing into the stereotype — a man’s idea of what a woman should be" (she said that in relation to India Willoughby, but it could be used of many, many MtT).

She's noticed that it's all about men defining what women are and come right out and said so, which has become taboo.

I love her right now.

Freddorika Sun 05-Mar-17 09:00:50

Thank you Jenni.

Lottapianos Sun 05-Mar-17 09:01:17

Good for her. We need more of this

TwoLeftSocks Sun 05-Mar-17 09:01:45

A video clip was posted up on The Times And The Sunday Things fb page about quarter past eight. Not many comments yet.

Tremendous, well done Jenni. What a courageous piece.
The backlash will be later, the social justice warriors just haven't got out of bed yet.

SloanyAnne Sun 05-Mar-17 09:06:34

Thank you Jenni Murray. Isn't it incredibly sad that the word I want to use about this is 'brave'.

shinynewusername Sun 05-Mar-17 09:09:57

Well done her. I have to admit I find her annoying on WH but really applaud her courage for writing this.

I know a lot of MNetters, including me, contacted WH to support Jenni when she challenged India bloody Willoughby. Hopefully we have shown her that there are plenty of women out there who don't buy the TA craziness - something you would never know from the media of course.

Freddorika Sun 05-Mar-17 09:14:27

Also the madness of 'chest feeding'

fruitlovingmonkey Sun 05-Mar-17 09:21:34

Brilliant. Thanks for sharing, I'm so glad she is speaking out about this.

Saucery Sun 05-Mar-17 09:24:34

Good on her.
