AIBU to feel really annoyed after seeing the trailer for Giles Coren’s new series on BBC2

Here is the trailer: m.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrphDomnLk

Last year Giles mocked the death of Dawn Foster, a disabled journalist from a working class background, which caused additional distress to her grieving family. He has never apologised. It is possible to cancel your Times subscription or to not buy the newspaper, but we all pay our TV license fee and the idea of it funding the salary of such a spiteful silver spooner and for him to go partying around five star hotels really, really irks me. Why has he faced absolutely no consequences? Why is he still in print and on TV? Piers Morgan was forced to resign for saying he didn’t believe Megan Markle saying she was suicidal. Surely laughing at someone’s premature death and hoping that they go to hell is much worse than that?

Is there some sort of BBC forum I can complain to? I’m not even going to mention his terrible sex scene writing.

Well you've just handed him a heap of free advertising on a plate.

I will definitely make a point of watching it now. Thanks

DontBeCatty · 30/11/2021 10:30

OP, YANBU - he is a really odious, smug and nasty man. I can’t stand him. He isn’t talented at all and he only got where he has due to Dad.

There are lots of examples of him saying awful things.

It seems once you are on the BBC gravy train then you are on it for life.

ginghamstarfish · 30/11/2021 10:37

I had not heard about this but would go out of my way to avoid watching anything with this man, or what I can only assume must be his sister, Victoria Coren. What a pair of smug untalented gits, pity the BBC can't employ those who get by on their own merits rather than those of their father. Stop paying the licence fee, it's really not worth it and hasn't been for a long time. We stopped some years ago and have not regretted it. Just turned off Radio 4 Womans Hour, as they were interviewing that well known 'celeb' Emily Ratakowski - as far as
I know only famous for dancing around naked and posting billions of photos of herself naked, for the titillation of men, about her views on feminism ...

squashyhat · 30/11/2021 10:38

I'm disappointed in Monica Galetti being part of this charade as well. I would have thought better of her. If nothing else it's extremely bad taste to broadcast the series in the middle of a pandemic.

SoupDragon · 30/11/2021 10:40

This 😂😂

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 10:48

YANBU, he is a mediocrity, still riding his father's coattails in middle age and an utter scumbag.

LadyWithLapdog · 30/11/2021 10:52

I read his latest restaurant review in The Times. It’s poor, sneery and not funny. I don’t think I’ve come across him before and I won’t bother.

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 10:55

@Justcallmebebes Since you’re such a fangirl of the hereditary columnist, perhaps I could also alert you to Giles’s highly acclaimed novel, Winkler. You might find the sex scenes particularly titillating if nasty small men are your type. Wink

I used to find him hilarious, 20 years ago. I can't work out if I've changed and grown up and developed in the intervening time or whether he has changed and become more smug, more obnoxious. I don't read his columns, follow him on twitter or watch anything with him anymore. I used to like his wife but I can't bear to read her either anymore.

IntermittentParps · 30/11/2021 10:57

Is it a new series? I thought it had been running for a bit (albeit still within the pandemic; the point about that stands).
TBF to Monica G, it may have been filmed before Dawn Foster's death and his comments?

I've watched it (and his other telly) in the past and admit to having found him quite funny. But post-Dawn Foster, I am much less inclined to watch.
Write to the Beeb, tweet them, etc. I'm going to.

DaisyNGO · 30/11/2021 11:00

So I'd like to not click the link
What has he said?

We don't have a TV licence - obviously we don't watch anything that needs.

It was some really prejudiced nasty stuff that forced the final decision for us.

ColinTheKoala · 30/11/2021 11:01

why is she responsible for her brother?

ColinTheKoala · 30/11/2021 11:03

It's also worth remembering that he can't help his height any more than someone can help their disability.

How he behaves is one thing, but please quit the heightism.

HollowTalk · 30/11/2021 11:03

He's always been a knob - that's his trademark.

topcat2014 · 30/11/2021 11:06

All these people with no licences, do you not have TVs in your houses?

It's not just a matter of saying I never watch BBC

LadyWithLapdog · 30/11/2021 11:07

OMFG that sex scene linked to above 😂

DaisyNGO · 30/11/2021 11:08

There have been long threads on this

You fill in the legal declaration

You can have a TV and watch Netflix, DVDs etc
Streaming is fine, live streaming is not

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 11:13

@ColinTheKoala Sorry, I know you shouldn’t mock someone’s height. IMO Giles Coren completely exemplifies the ‘small angry man’ type, an absolutely textbook Napoleon Complex.

ElaineMarieBenes · 30/11/2021 11:14

He posed a question and did not name anyone - unlike the attacks on him?

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 11:14

@ColinTheKoala And I agree with you, Victoria is not responsible for her brother’s terrible behaviour. She is brilliant on Pointless. I volunteer at a care home and all the old people there are such fans.

OP posts:
FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 11:18

@ElaineMarieBenes It was perfectly obvious who he meant though, and it was very distressing for Dawn’s family. She was only 33 when she died. He said he wished she would “burn in hell” and then an hour later changed it to “HA HA HA HA HA HA”.

She isn't on Pointless @FlirtyKirti,but Alexander Armstrong is her brother's brother in law. Keeps it in the family.

Samcro · 30/11/2021 11:22

do you say the same about Frankie Boil?

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 11:26

I mean Only Connect! The old people watch Pointless and then Old Connect in the afternoon.
