AIBU to feel really annoyed after seeing the trailer for Giles Coren’s new series on BBC2

Here is the trailer: m.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrphDomnLk

Last year Giles mocked the death of Dawn Foster, a disabled journalist from a working class background, which caused additional distress to her grieving family. He has never apologised. It is possible to cancel your Times subscription or to not buy the newspaper, but we all pay our TV license fee and the idea of it funding the salary of such a spiteful silver spooner and for him to go partying around five star hotels really, really irks me. Why has he faced absolutely no consequences? Why is he still in print and on TV? Piers Morgan was forced to resign for saying he didn’t believe Megan Markle saying she was suicidal. Surely laughing at someone’s premature death and hoping that they go to hell is much worse than that?

Is there some sort of BBC forum I can complain to? I’m not even going to mention his terrible sex scene writing.

I just see two journalists slagging each other off.
She said (and thanks to KentishTowner for posting)
'Giles Coren is a prime example of how the “if I’ve heard of yer da, I don’t need to hear from you” rule holds for almost every man bar Jesus."'
He said, shortly after she died, that she could 'fuck off to hell' where she 'belonged'.
(thanks FlirtyKirti for posting)

Not quite the same.

IntermittentParps · 30/11/2021 15:23

@QueeniesCroft

I'm struggling to recall the exact details, but didn't he write some quite troubling things about his daughter? Perhaps something to do with a holiday and totally inappropriate use of the word "erotic"?
Yes, a holiday with him and his young daughter was the 'sexiest' holiday he'd ever had, apparently.
QueeniesCroft · 30/11/2021 15:25

If he'd said something about her having been mean to him (although I don't think she was at all) but still a shame for her to die so young, then he would have looked like a decent person and still attracted some attention to himself. By being so vitriolic, he just made himself look pointlessly spiteful and spoilt.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 15:35

@Samcro, GC wrote an article saying he wanted to rape his 12yo neighbour.

@Lupad, there was no Twitter feud. Dawn Foster made a factual comment about Giles Coren. 2 years later, following her untimely death he lied about her and crowed about her dying. Such is his wit, humour, bravery and intelligence. That expensive education sure paid off. The man is a revolting little dick.Angry

Samcro · 30/11/2021 15:56

@TooBigForMyBoots what has that got to do with me?
just because I am calling the op out on their hypocrisy. they think FB is ok as they are a comedian!!!!!!!!
they then make some nasty comments about GC. pot calling...........

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 16:15

Here is what Giles Coren said about his teenage neighbour:

Two journalists feuding on Twitter, who cares.

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 16:20

@Samcro I don’t accept that I’m being hypocritical. I don’t see how you can defend Giles Coren and condemn Frankie Boyle. Personally I think what someone says in a comedy routine, however offensive, is different to what someone says on Twitter, abusing a real person who has recently died. Especially if that person is getting license payers’ money to appear on a family programme. Frankie Boyle is very much late night, and a very niche, very dark comedian. Giles is trying to position himself as F Word/Masterchef/Bake Off/family game show host.

Have you read either of their tweets (quoted and posted more than once on here)? Actually you can't have, or you wouldn't seriously call it 'feuding' and be so dismissive.
DontBeCatty · 30/11/2021 16:21

I’m not sure what the whole story was about the tweets with Dawn Foster. Maybe we do t know the full details and maybe she went way to far. I don’t know. However, even if she was totally out of order it’s was extremely nasty of Giles Coren to posts the cruel posts after she died. It’s a deeply fucked up thing to do. Was he trying to be funny or trying to hurt her family? Either way is sick.

Does anyone know if he ever apologised?

Yes, I have. It seems like she started it with a rude comment naming him, he followed up two years later with a rude comment not naming her, but alluding to her. I don't care. It's tweets.

IntermittentParps · 30/11/2021 16:25

He 'followed up' when she died.
She made a jibe (rude, sure, but that's the worst you can say about it) about nepotism. He said she belonged in hell and (paraphrasing a bit) wished her there.
How in God's name can you think they're the same?
And do you think her family and friends 'cared'? I wonder if you would care if it was tweets about a family member or friend of yours?

lupad · 30/11/2021 16:25

@madisonbridges surely using an example is relevant otherwise the topic of nepotism is moot if you can't name anyone?

If I tweeted that Donald Trump was a misogynist I would think him celebrating my demise later was a little ott.

Samcro · 30/11/2021 16:25

@FlirtyKirti I have never defended him. just asked if you felt the same about FB. you have defended FB even though he mocks people with disabilities....... that makes you a hypocrite.
what time of night and what job the person has is beside the point.

lupad · 30/11/2021 16:29

Surely he could have challenged her nepotism claim at the time? I don't think anyone would criticise him for that, it's very odd to be so upset it about years later.

A man called me a an obscenity the other day whilst driving, if he crashed & died I wouldn't be celebrating it even though he was in the wrong initially.

DontBeCatty · 30/11/2021 16:29

OP. I do find it a bit odd that you are ok with Frankie Boyle. That joke about Harvey Price (a disabled child at the time) being a potential rarest is extremely nasty. Imagine if you were one of Harvey siblings or his Mum.
Being ‘clever and funny’ doesn’t mean jokes like that are ok.

Lochroy · 30/11/2021 16:30

So was that "it" in terms of quantity of quotes? How bizarre that he even remembered her saying something on Twitter at all. He must get unwelcome comments all of the time, left, right and centre.

That's quite a gross over reaction.

Birdkin · 30/11/2021 16:30

He said about his daughter:

“ I sit and stare at her, like the dippiest lover, not talking, transfixed by her beauty. Unable quite to drink it all in. Missing heartbeats at the way she gazes out at the sea through her long, curling lashes while slurping Coke through her pursed, plump little lips.

And doing this I realise how being on holiday with my tiny daughter is the most insanely romantic holiday, in some ways even the sexiest holiday, that I’ve ever had.”

I’d say how did anyone let him publish this creepy creepy article but I’ve seen the way he talks to editors….

lupad · 30/11/2021 16:30

Wowsers if that had been my dc Giles had tweeted about then I would likely have been arrested!

mustlovegin · 30/11/2021 16:44

This has already been discussed on MN. The conclusion was that Cancel Culture is poisonous. Leave the man alone. Don't watch the programme if you don't want to. Other fee paying viewers will enjoy his show and are entitled to watch it

LadyLyndon · 30/11/2021 16:46

I have met Giles Coren and he said something. But if I published it he would deny it, sue me and I’d lose my house.

He is very charismatic, superficially charming and tells excellent stories.

BTW his wife and sister are both on Mumsnet.

Hont1986 · 30/11/2021 16:51

I don't think they're the same, I think hers was worse. She was directly rude about him by name, unprovoked. He gave his reasons for being rude about an unnamed person.

I think if you want to run around being bolshy on Twitter, then you have to take the consequences that people are going to fire back. I doubt her family and friends did care since he didn't name her and deleted the tweet shortly after posting it. But regardless I don't really care if they did because as I said, live by the sword, die by the sword.

IntermittentParps · 30/11/2021 16:54

I doubt her family and friends did care I'm not going to take your word for that. he didn't name her and deleted the tweet shortly after posting it. And yet we all know who he meant and what he said.

But regardless I don't really care if they did because as I said, live by the sword, die by the sword.
I think your definition of 'swords' is a bit off, to say the least. I can't say it enough times: she had a pop at nepotism; he celebrated her dying.

lupad · 30/11/2021 16:54

Bolshy?! 😆 I thought the point was he fired back after she was dead, that's not normal!

Just put something on a different thread about what an individual called Miles Florin said to you Grin
