AIBU to feel really annoyed after seeing the trailer for Giles Coren’s new series on BBC2

Here is the trailer: m.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrphDomnLk

Last year Giles mocked the death of Dawn Foster, a disabled journalist from a working class background, which caused additional distress to her grieving family. He has never apologised. It is possible to cancel your Times subscription or to not buy the newspaper, but we all pay our TV license fee and the idea of it funding the salary of such a spiteful silver spooner and for him to go partying around five star hotels really, really irks me. Why has he faced absolutely no consequences? Why is he still in print and on TV? Piers Morgan was forced to resign for saying he didn’t believe Megan Markle saying she was suicidal. Surely laughing at someone’s premature death and hoping that they go to hell is much worse than that?

Is there some sort of BBC forum I can complain to? I’m not even going to mention his terrible sex scene writing.

Giles Coren is vile and it's sad to see Monica working with him, I really like her.

As for the comments about Victoria Coren Mitchell being talentless, far from it! She's an international poker star, hardly talentless. Plus she's brilliant on Only Connect and I loved her on Taskmaster recently.

gogohm · 30/11/2021 13:16

Does anyone know what was said to Giles coren to provoke that tweet? I personally hadn't heard about it because I rarely use Twitter.

I do love watching Victoria coren-Mitchell. She's worth the licence fee and I've watched the first series of the hotel programme which was ok, didn't bother with the second

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 13:19

In 2018 she said, "Giles Coren a prime example of how the “if I’ve heard of yer da, I don’t need to hear from you” rule holds for almost every man bar Jesus."

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 13:19

^^ for @gogohm

DismantledKing · 30/11/2021 13:22

You’re being hypocritical re Frankie Boyle and Giles Coren. Both are as vile and misogynistic as each other, but because Boyle has decided he’s on the left now he tends to get the free pass.

madisonbridges · 30/11/2021 13:30

Why did you say she was working class and disabled. He never referenced that. Are you saying if she'd been middle class and not disabled his comments would have been OK?

I find it hard to take seriously a person who thinks it's brilliant when a man criticises a living person for their disability and looks when they can feel hurt and belittled, but condemns someone condemning the behaviour of a dead person when they know nothing about it. Frankie Boyle mocked Rebecca Adlington for no greater reason than she dared win 2 olympic gold medals. But it gave you a laugh so I guess that's OK. Giles Coren likes to think he's a humorous writer so doesn't that give him as big a pass to say horrible things as it does Frankie Boyle?

DontBeCatty · 30/11/2021 13:37

@Samcro

do you say the same about Frankie Boil?
OMG Yes! He’s beyond obnoxious too.

If you asked me who are the two people I most dislike on the TV. Frankie Boyle and Giles Coren are the very two people I’d name . I know there are objectively worse people but these two are both intelligent, know exactly what they are doing but just don’t care. There are very nasty people.

Frankie Boil has never apologised for the sick comments he made about Katie Price disabled son- comments made while the boy was a child. It’s hilarious that he was able to successfully take the Daily Mirror to court when they described him in an article as a ‘racist comedian’ but that he sees nothing wrong with making a joke about a disabled child being a potential rapist. He still hasn’t apologised.

Why the fuck the BBC continue to use these people is beyond me.
I found it really depressing when Louis Theroux interviewed Frankie Boyle on his radio show and barely mentioned the Katie price incident. Louis Theroux is meant to be a reporter who pushes boundaries and isn’t scared to address difficult subjects but he was falling all over Frankie boil in the interview. It all stunk of the old boys club to me (White, educated and privileged)

The BBC has a Royal Charter which sets out its mission and its five public purposes. I’m not sure how employing the likes of Frankie Boyle and Giles Coren fit with it.😕

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 30/11/2021 13:40

I have been trying to find out what the hell Coren meant by "when someone dies who has trolled you on Twitter, saying vile and hurtful things about you and your family..."
I can't find any trace of "trolling" or "vile and hurtful" things said by the late Dawn Foster - am I missing a whole pile of it or did he seriously mean the "yer Da" tweet?

Auntpodder · 30/11/2021 13:42

There are so many better presenters and writers than Giles Coren. It would have been filmed before Dawn Foster's death but I'm still amazed that anyone commissions/hires him. If it's any consolation, I suspect he knows this, hence his attitudes.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 30/11/2021 13:43

He is also xenophobic towards Polish people, so he can fuck off for that too.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 13:54

He sock puppetted as a Polish plumber to send himself antisemitic abuse, so he could claim victimhood status.Shock

TheElvishQueen · 30/11/2021 14:10

I enjoy the series. I don’t like Giles though. I watch it for the hotels! I am puzzled Monica seems to be genuinely friendly with him. He’s a horrible man.

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 14:12

What do people think of his wife Esther Walker? A few years ago she had a really funny blog about cooking and recipes called Recipe Rifle, but then she stopped doing that and has now positioned herself as a sort of side-kick/apologist to Giles, which I would imagine is a pretty problematic position to be in right now since the general consensus seems to be that he’s a massive see you next Tuesday.

@madisonbridges

I guess it just seems particularly appalling that a privately educated, white, male silver spooner is laughing at the death of a working class, disabled woman who can’t even respond because she’s dead. He has a lovely family and lots of money from his media career and job at The Times so why would he wait two years to write that Tweet after she died. He must be seriously thin-skinned and incredibly fucked up to repeatedly behave like that.

notacooldad · 30/11/2021 14:26

Oh don’t worry, she’s obnoxious in her own right
How come?
What's she done that's so bad?

He sock puppetted as a Polish plumber to send himself antisemitic abuse, so he could claim victimhood status
Seriously? I'd not heard that one! Wow.

Samcro · 30/11/2021 14:39

@TooBigForMyBoots

Is saying you want to rape your 12yo neighbour ok with you *@Samcro*? I find Giles Coren's whole attitude to sexual violence way off and very suss.Hmm
wtf no idea why you would ask me that. weird
madisonbridges · 30/11/2021 14:42

@FlirtyKirti. What have their backgrounds got to do with anything for either of them? Why does it matter that he's a male. She started it, not him. Are women allowed to be nasty but not men? She took a potshot about his background. Not because she was disabled or working class but because she didn't like him. He went back deeper. Not because of her disability or background but because he didn't like her. That's what happens when you start a twitter feud. They're both unlikeable.

I don't know about a silver spoon. His father was a journalist whose parents were a plumber and hairdresser. His mother was a doctor. He's not from landed gentry. And if he was, his accident of birth was no different from Dawn Foster's. Why do you look down on him and not on Foster's when neither of them had any say in it? If he took advantage of his father's name how does that make him any different from Nicholas Cage, George Clooney, Nigeria Lawson, Shirley Williams, Euan Blair and so on and so on. You think Dawn Foster wouldn't take equal advantage! I know I would.

You're right, she's dead. So she's not offended. I'm sure her family us as lovely as Coren's so they might be hurt by his comments. But, again, that's what happened when you start a twitter feud. Don't say nasty things about other people and the likelihood us they won't say nasty things about you.

I don't understand why you make comments about their sex, wealth, class or physicality. My take is that people should be judged on their words and actions rather than backgrounds over which they have no control. It seems to me that you have a chip on your shoulder about anyone you assume is better off than you.

lupad · 30/11/2021 14:50

He's a cockwomble & utterly mediocre.

KittensWearingWoollyMittens · 30/11/2021 14:51

It's not just a matter of saying I never watch BBC
It is a matter of saying you never watch live TV. I don't have a licence as I refuse to bankroll an institution that supported Jimmy Savile. You ring the licensing department and tell them the truth, that you don't watch live TV. Simple. There is nothing they can do about it.

Lochroy · 30/11/2021 14:51

He's a twat, and what he said was particularly unpleasant, but I just see two journalists slagging each other off.

lupad · 30/11/2021 14:56

He sock puppetted as a Polish plumber to send himself antisemitic abuse, so he could claim victimhood status.

what a bellend!

lupad · 30/11/2021 14:58

She took a potshot about his background. Not because she was disabled or working class but because she didn't like him. He went back deeper. Not because of her disability or background but because he didn't like her. That's what happens when you start a twitter feud. They're both unlikeable.

What did she say?

Did he feud with her before she died?

lupad · 30/11/2021 14:59

Don't say nasty things about other people and the likelihood us they won't say nasty things about you.

I thought she just said something about nepotism?

madisonbridges · 30/11/2021 15:20

@lupad. If you want to make a point about nepotism, that's fine. But if you drag someone into your point about nepotism, then you're at risk of starting acrimonious ill feeling. Which is what she did and what happened. I can't say I find the actions of either of them to be appealing.

QueeniesCroft · 30/11/2021 15:23

I'm struggling to recall the exact details, but didn't he write some quite troubling things about his daughter? Perhaps something to do with a holiday and totally inappropriate use of the word "erotic"?
