AIBU to feel really annoyed after seeing the trailer for Giles Coren’s new series on BBC2

Here is the trailer: m.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrphDomnLk

Last year Giles mocked the death of Dawn Foster, a disabled journalist from a working class background, which caused additional distress to her grieving family. He has never apologised. It is possible to cancel your Times subscription or to not buy the newspaper, but we all pay our TV license fee and the idea of it funding the salary of such a spiteful silver spooner and for him to go partying around five star hotels really, really irks me. Why has he faced absolutely no consequences? Why is he still in print and on TV? Piers Morgan was forced to resign for saying he didn’t believe Megan Markle saying she was suicidal. Surely laughing at someone’s premature death and hoping that they go to hell is much worse than that?

Is there some sort of BBC forum I can complain to? I’m not even going to mention his terrible sex scene writing.

He is very charismatic, superficially charming

Why has he not bought these assets to the screen?

lupad · 30/11/2021 16:57

But regardless I don't really care if they did because as I said, live by the sword, die by the sword

This doesn't make sense in the context of what happened.

DismantledKing · 30/11/2021 16:58
@Samcro I don’t accept that I’m being hypocritical. I don’t see how you can defend Giles Coren and condemn Frankie Boyle. Personally I think what someone says in a comedy routine, however offensive, is different to what someone says on Twitter, abusing a real person who has recently died. Especially if that person is getting license payers’ money to appear on a family programme. Frankie Boyle is very much late night, and a very niche, very dark comedian. Giles is trying to position himself as F Word/Masterchef/Bake Off/family game show host.
But you are being hypocritical. Both are fucking awful human beings.

TheElvishQueen · 30/11/2021 16:59

@Birdkin

He said about his daughter:

“ I sit and stare at her, like the dippiest lover, not talking, transfixed by her beauty. Unable quite to drink it all in. Missing heartbeats at the way she gazes out at the sea through her long, curling lashes while slurping Coke through her pursed, plump little lips.

And doing this I realise how being on holiday with my tiny daughter is the most insanely romantic holiday, in some ways even the sexiest holiday, that I’ve ever had.”

I’d say how did anyone let him publish this creepy creepy article but I’ve seen the way he talks to editors….

That is just utterly nauseating. How could anyone say such a thing and not realise how wrong it is?
nitsandwormsdodger · 30/11/2021 17:02

I I love that show and watch it all the time
I agree that what he said about the woman who died was shocking and makes him look like a spiteful prick
But I will still enjoy the show

nanbread · 30/11/2021 17:02

He's horrible. Reminds me of these Weasley boys from school who would slag everyone else off, even though they themselves were incredibly shit.

And it's not just an act, he is an acquaintance of a friend of mine and he's a dick in real life too.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 17:09

@Hont1986

Two journalists feuding on Twitter, who cares.
Only one was a journalist and she's dead. The other one is a talentless scrote who's gets paid for being his father's son.

There was no feud.

FlirtyKirti · 30/11/2021 17:13

This may be apocryphal but I heard it at a very drunken dinner party a few years ago with lots of people who went to Oxford University: a man told a story about how his long term ex-girlfriend went out with a man called Ciles Goren after him (she wasn’t Hester Talker though) Apparently he ran into them randomly in a pub, and his ex introduced him to Ciles who said to her, “But you told me all your exes were good looking though”. To which this guy (who, as I recall was very tall and was an ex-rower) turned to her and said, “You told me you only fancied tall guys”. Then he patted Ciles on the head. He said he thought Ciles was going to take a swing at him but then thought better of it - he was huge - and that Ciles and his ex swiftly left the pub.

Disclaimer: this may be complete nonsense and I have no way of verifying it as I don’t know the person who told the story, which we all found very funny at the time but may have been BS.

He has a real chip on his shoulder about being Jewish, that's for sure, so perhaps he is sensitive about being short too. All that privilege and a great career, but he looks for slights all over the place.

madisonbridges · 30/11/2021 17:20

@lupad

*@madisonbridges* surely using an example is relevant otherwise the topic of nepotism is moot if you can't name anyone?

If I tweeted that Donald Trump was a misogynist I would think him celebrating my demise later was a little ott.

If you called Donald Trump a mysoginist, you'd be opening the door for him to be unpleasant back, and I wouldn't have any sympathy with you. DF's comment wasn't really about nepotism, it was about the fact she didn't like GC and thought his opinion was worth nothing. She tried to make her comment funny to be impactful. It wasn't really either. GC then said something worse. Well, that's what happens when you start saying things about people. Comments get nastier.

I personally wouldn't have said anything about her dying. I think it's disrespectful to her family. But if she hadn't named him and just said, “I read another prime example today of how the 'if I've heard of yer da...", then he couldn't know it was directed at him and he wouldn't have taken offence. But she decided to tie her comment to him. He then responded.

The twittersphere is not an empty void. You have no idea what will get under someone else's skin. If you don't want people to take a pop at you, don't take a pop at them first.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 17:22

GC then said something worse.

No, he waited for nearly 2 years and her death to post lies about her.

IntermittentParps · 30/11/2021 17:24

GC then said something worse. when she died
Christ. Head against a brick wall.
Can people really not see that there is a line? You know, when someone dies?

madisonbridges · 30/11/2021 17:26

No, he waited for nearly 2 years and her death to post lies about her.

What was the lie?

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 17:28

He claimed she trolled his family. She didn't.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 30/11/2021 17:31

if you called Donald Trump a mysoginist, you'd be opening the door for him to be unpleasant back, and I wouldn't have any sympathy with you.

Is telling the truth by definition 'unpleasant' then? If I called Ian Huntley a murderer, would he be fully justified in 'having a pop' at me because I'd been 'unpleasant' first?

peaceanddove · 30/11/2021 17:33
@FlirtyKirti. What have their backgrounds got to do with anything for either of them? Why does it matter that he's a male. She started it, not him. Are women allowed to be nasty but not men? She took a potshot about his background. Not because she was disabled or working class but because she didn't like him. He went back deeper. Not because of her disability or background but because he didn't like her. That's what happens when you start a twitter feud. They're both unlikeable.

I don't know about a silver spoon. His father was a journalist whose parents were a plumber and hairdresser. His mother was a doctor. He's not from landed gentry. And if he was, his accident of birth was no different from Dawn Foster's. Why do you look down on him and not on Foster's when neither of them had any say in it? If he took advantage of his father's name how does that make him any different from Nicholas Cage, George Clooney, Nigeria Lawson, Shirley Williams, Euan Blair and so on and so on. You think Dawn Foster wouldn't take equal advantage! I know I would.

You're right, she's dead. So she's not offended. I'm sure her family us as lovely as Coren's so they might be hurt by his comments. But, again, that's what happened when you start a twitter feud. Don't say nasty things about other people and the likelihood us they won't say nasty things about you.

I don't understand why you make comments about their sex, wealth, class or physicality. My take is that people should be judged on their words and actions rather than backgrounds over which they have no control. It seems to me that you have a chip on your shoulder about anyone you assume is better off than you.
Love this post. 100% agree.

madisonbridges · 30/11/2021 17:33

@IntermittentParps

GC then said something worse. when she died Christ. Head against a brick wall. Can people really not see that there is a line? You know, when someone dies?
Would I write what he wrote? No. If he showed me the tweet and asked, Should I send it? I'd say, no. Do I think he looks good for sending it? No. Do I think anyone would think better of him for sending it? No. Do I think I sending it would better his career? No.

Do I think he should be sacked and never employed again for sending it? No.

Would you stop saying horrible things about Donald Trump if he died tomorrow? I'm willing to bet, no.

Don't say horrible things to people and then they have no cause to say horrible things back. And, honestly, out of all the people concerned, the one who is now least bothered is Dawn Foster.

IntermittentParps · 30/11/2021 17:43

Would you stop saying horrible things about Donald Trump if he died tomorrow? I'm willing to bet, no.
I would not say on a public forum, shortly after Donald Trump died, anything along the lines of 'someone who talked about building a wall to stop Mexicans getting in can just fuck off now to hell where they belong.'
Possibly more to the point, I think Donald Trump has done a few worse things than Dawn Foster saying Coren benefits from nepotism... Grin

lupad · 30/11/2021 17:48

If you called Donald Trump a mysoginist, you'd be opening the door for him to be unpleasant back, and I wouldn't have any sympathy with you.

I wouldn't expect sympathy & actually wouldn't have a problem with him challenging me.

Is the truth now classed as being unpleasant to someone?

What I wouldn't expect is for Trump to retaliate upon my death & I wouldn't do it to him either, it's cowardly for one.

madisonbridges · 30/11/2021 17:49

@Skiptheheartsandflowers

if you called Donald Trump a mysoginist, you'd be opening the door for him to be unpleasant back, and I wouldn't have any sympathy with you.

Is telling the truth by definition 'unpleasant' then? If I called Ian Huntley a murderer, would he be fully justified in 'having a pop' at me because I'd been 'unpleasant' first?

To be fair, that's a valid point. But I would say calling someone a mysoginist on twitter is done as an insult not as a factual description. Certainly DT is going to see it that way because he denies he is. So, word to the wise, if you call him that he's not going to take it well. Expect to be insulted back.

Similarly, if you tweeted to Huntley, "hey, you murderer....", you're not starting a friendly convo, are you? So, yeah, I'd think he's going to 'have a pop' back. I'd also think that was the initial writers intent and wouldn't have any sympathy.

Surely every adult has learned through growing up that if you say something purposefully mean, someone is going to say something meaner back. That's why it's a good idea to watch what you say.

lupad · 30/11/2021 17:50

DF's comment wasn't really about nepotism, it was about the fact she didn't like GC and thought his opinion was worth nothing. She tried to make her comment funny to be impactful. It wasn't really either.

How did you interpret that all from one tweet?

GC then said something worse. Well, that's what happens when you start saying things about people. Comments get nastier.

My point is why did he wait till she was dead years later to respond? That's completely disproportionate

madisonbridges · 30/11/2021 17:52

@TooBigForMyBoots

He claimed she trolled his family. She didn't.
Everyone on here has said that she called him out over nepotism. Nepotism by the very definition involves his family.
lupad · 30/11/2021 17:56

But do you know what trolled means?

IntermittentParps · 30/11/2021 17:57

@lupad

But do you know what trolled means?
Yes, exactly. It's a bit overly dramatic for what she said.
TooBigForMyBoots · 30/11/2021 17:58

My point is why did he wait till she was dead years later to respond?

Because he's a cowardly wee cunt.
