Many women have been suspended from sm for asking the question:
“Do you believe that male sexed people should be allowed access to changing rooms and showers for female sexed people and teenagers?”
Seems like a perfectly reasonable question which we should be allowed to ask

YANBU it's outrageous that women are being treated like this.

It is a valid question. But....
What if the male sexed person has undergone various hormonal treatments and surgery to make them as physically close to a female sexed person as possible? Someone who genuinely lives their life as female. Where should they go? What facilities should they use?

No, you can't ask that question!

The men's.

No amount of hormones or surgery or "living as a woman" (whatever that means - usually just confirming to stereotypes) can turn XY chromosomes into XX.

I agree the men's may not be appropriate - but that doesn't mean the women's is. We're not just men without penises and male violence is not women's problem to solve.

Separate facilities, dignity and privacy for all.

What does 'genuinely living their life as female' mean?

I'd be fully behind the inclusion of third spaces that provide a safe and private space for transgender people to use, should they not want to use the space of their biological sex (and I understand why they might not want to do this).

Their feelings of discomfort don't outweigh the feelings of women's discomfort. This seems like the best solution for everyone involved.

I agree OP. I am following this on Twitter and have been overwhelmed by a feeling of helplessness, seeing intelligent, reasonable women silenced over this.

I think people should be banned from posting their anti trans stuff on the general pages of MN such as AIBU.

No she should not have been banned from twitter for asking this question.

It is not hate speech.

Freedom of expression is important, no matter what side of the argument you are on.

This issue is divisive but I can tell you that women who post these questions are often subject to abuse on twitter or privately for what they have posted on twitter. The abuse they receive ought to result in a twitter ban but doesn't.

The powers that be don't want women to ask questions.

Why is it anti trans to protect women's safe spaces? I've never seen a reasonable answer to this question.

Why is it the responsibility of women to protect transwomen from male violence. Why can't the men step up?

Why do we have to accept male bodies in our safe spaces with no debate?

OhAnotherNameChange Wed 27-Jan-21 09:33:16

@SeasonFinale what is trabsohobic about women wanting single sex spaces to remain single sex?

Blubellsarebells Wed 27-Jan-21 09:36:46

"I think people should be banned from posting their anti trans stuff on the general pages of MN such as AIBU."
So you think the question is anti trans?
Are womens spaces anti trans?
Is me not wanting my little sister and nieces to see strange penises anti trans?
Seems like trans rights are anti safegaurding if so.

It is absolutely valid and it is disgusting that anyone should be banned from anywhere for asking it.

Wanting to preserve single sex spaces as provided for in law is not 'anti-trans'

BigPaperBag Wed 27-Jan-21 09:47:17

Why can’t there be a trans m-f and f-m changing room? So we have 4 changing rooms (plus a disabled one) As women, we deserve our dignity too and shouldn’t have to bow to the feelings of the minority.

MrsHusky Wed 27-Jan-21 09:47:17

No she shouldn't be banned but, its not THAT black and white as some people are saying.

I know a lot of Transwomen, i can assure you, not ONE of them has ANY kind of intention of abusing/raping a woman, and i have absolutely no issue in sharing shower/bathroom space with them, and have done at various conventions where we've used the spaces swimming pools/public toilets.

Personally, there ought to be a 'genderless' facility available for those who dont want to be in the male/female spaces, or lockable cubicles provided now.

There are enough non-binary folk around who aren't trans, but who still dont want to be in their bio-gender bathrooms that society ought to adapt to be inclusive.

@SeasonFinale @CokeAndPepsi

Genuinely trying to understand here and would be grateful for your response.

Let's take this scenario - middle aged man decides he was born in the wrong body. Over the course of a few weeks or months he starts wearing make up, padded bras. Perhaps he wears a wig. Other than that, nothing else changes about him. He decides to go to a sports centre, perhaps there's a children's swimming class there. You are telling me that women and girls have no right to object to this individual using the female changing rooms? This individual can shower - naked if he chooses - in front of pre-pubescent children and no-one has any right to object? Jewish women, Muslim women - they have to accept a penis in their changing room?

MammaMiaWallace Wed 27-Jan-21 09:50:49

@Simarilion “ surely many people feel they should be richer, younger, more attractive than they actually are, but that changes nothing about them physically!”

And crucially, there’s not a broader expectation of validation and consequential infringement upon the rights protected in law for the group they perceive themselves to belong to; a group whose lines of definition I.e. biological sex, are thus muddied to the extent it becomes a meaningless legal category. 😡🤬
