Who's up for a thread to discuss our progress this year? We've had threads following Adriene's 30 days of Yoga for the last few years so sign up now for January.

Based on the last few years I'll warn you now: watch out for day 6!!!!

OP posts:
mumsiedarlingrevolta · 07/01/2018 13:09

gump I am finding the chat here is helping me love the online yoga versus IRL-very supportive and encouraging Grin a sort of "we are all in it together' mentality that helps spur me on.
6 was tough-but I had time and foolishly felt like i'd like to have done a little more so I got all carried away and did another one after -did a 17 min "weight loss yoga" which was tough and I was shaking all over but I like to know I've done something. The soreness makes me happy.
And I've figured out how to set my fitbit to yoga Star happy days!!

BuzzKillington · 07/01/2018 13:19

I didn't have time for day 5 yesterday, so I just did 5 and 6 back to back.

6 was pretty tough! Much prefer the faster pace though.

DistanceCall · 07/01/2018 13:26

She isn't doing it for free, she's a massive youtube star. Have a read of the threads about bloggers in style and beauty, they are eye opening.

I have. I know about the world of blogs and vlogs, thank you very much. And no, they are not rolling in cash. And there is no advertising in her videos, so I seriously doubt she is.

In any case, I feel that work should be paid for. I don't care if she receives money from YouTube for her videos.

DistanceCall · 07/01/2018 13:28

She'll be getting an income from the advertising on youtube, I suspect lots of her outfits will be gifted by the brands as a form of advertising as well, in addition the videas are advertising for her own brand, her taught classes are very popular and she does demonstration tours where lots of people go to see her (if you knew she was coming to the UK wouldn't you want to see her?).

I really, really resent this assumption by which if someone is wealthy / doing well, you don't have to pay them, because hey, there're rich.

AugustRose · 07/01/2018 13:46

Just finished day 6 and it was tough, glad it was short Grin

I'm just grateful that Adriene puts these videos out for free, I wouldn't be doing yoga otherwise. I have looked into classes but can't afford the fees at the minute and from what I've read they can be pretty hit or miss, depending on the style and teacher.

Buxbaum · 07/01/2018 14:06

I suspect that Adriene could potentially make a lot more money from her brand than she currently is. I doubt she is rolling in it.

Yes, she will have monetised her YouTube channel, but otherwise her main income streams are her teaching, her roadshow, her small merchandise shop and her service for subscribers / members.

She is careful not to include visible logos in her clothing or equipment. She did a press trip with Adidas a while ago but she doesn't do any major endorsements. There are no affiliate links on her website. She doesn't use her insta or twitter to promote brands other than her own. She also has a career as an actress and does quite a lot of voice work.

This is probably very deliberate - she has undoubtedly decided that longer term it is better for her brand to be perceived as 'authentic' and major endorsements would undermine this.

So Adriene is almost certainly not languishing in poverty. Nevertheless, she makes a huge amount of content available for free at the point of access. I bristled a bit upthread when someone asked if she published a free video every day of the year because I think few people have much idea of what goes into creating the content, and I really, really dislike the general culture of undervaluing content that currently exists.

If someone feels that they have got a lot out of this content and wants to make some payment for it then I don't think that they should be dissuaded.

carrie74 · 07/01/2018 14:16

Did day 5&6 back to back this mornings no which was good. Much prefer the faster pace and a bit of a challenge strength wise. Felt quite stiff today though, so yoga was the best thing Grin.

I love that Adriene does these videos for free, and others who do the same (I also use the content in Fitness Blender a lot, also free). I don't fully understand the monetisation of websites (I've read the bloggers thread too), but don't see much obvious endorsement or links on either channel, and personally I appreciate this as it makes the content feel authentic. Whether I'm deluding myself or not, that's fine by me. I appreciate the sentiment to pay, although for me it would have to be a relatively token amount I think.

DistanceCall · 07/01/2018 14:30

It's $12 per month or $120 per year, which I think is very affordable (for me, at least). Of course, it's perfectly all right if people are unable or unwilling to pay - it's a completely legitimate option, and Adriene seems to be completely OK with it. I seriously doubt that she does what she does for the money.

It's this entitled attitude of not appreciating others' work and taking things for granted (and free) that really pisses me off.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 07/01/2018 15:10

distance I didn't notice anything about subscribing- I def will after.
Cheap as one yoga session here for a month of Adriene.
Is it on website or will get a link at the end?

Talisin · 07/01/2018 15:26

mumsie link here

SureIusedtobetaller · 07/01/2018 15:45

Stalled here- with the cold weather my hands and wrists just can’t cope and are getting really sore, so I’m going to do some of her wrist strengthening stuff and some of the no wrist videos for a couple of weeks.

Thanks Talisin assume start when 30 day trial over?

And fat agree re home practice-amazed at how much I am enjoying it.

The more excuses you can make to get to the class the easier it is to skip a class-but with this it's so easy to find the time and I love her teaching style Grin

Buxbaum · 07/01/2018 16:36

mumsie True isn't a trial. You could carry on practising using only her free YouTube content if you wished. You can pay to subscribe to additional content and courses, and I think she also does live classes (although obviously these take place on American time).

DragonsAndCakes · 07/01/2018 16:39

I’d done some of her classes just by googling ‘adriene yoga 30 day’ and picking a random day. All free and on YouTube.

GissASquizz · 07/01/2018 16:39

Just caught up by doing 5 and 6 back to back. Feeling quite proud of myself that I kept up.

CountFosco · 07/01/2018 16:48

It's this entitled attitude of not appreciating others' work and taking things for granted (and free) that really pisses me off.

I'm not taking things for granted, I'm just pointing out that someone who is so big on youtube (most searched workout term is 'Yoga with Adriene', she has 2 million subscribers and a lot more people watching that don't subscribe) will be financially compensated in a way that a) enables her to make a living and b) has minimal impact on us (few seconds spent watching an advert before access to the content). I'm not saying she shouldn't be compensated, I'm saying she already is. I think you are being naive if you think she's doing this purely for the love of yoga. The videos are professional, the content is well planned and she has professional management. Buxbaum is correct that her website is very focussed on the yoga and presents a professional face but that just tells me she has good management and that she has long term ambitions. Good for her, she is very good at what she does and deserves the rewards of her hard work.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 07/01/2018 17:09

buxbaum oh I didn't realise that-
thanks.
So does she do a daily video every day (which seems a lot) ??
I'm in the UK so I guess I just watch when I want.
But am getting a lot out of the short sessions daily Smile
and think she has a great way about her that I really like!

Talisin · 07/01/2018 17:16

She generally does one free video weekly (always on a Sunday last year) outside of January. Majority of her previous videos are freely available on youtube.

Gumpendorf · 07/01/2018 17:18

And I've figured out how to set my fitbit to yoga **

Goes off to investigate.....

I'm with you, mumsie If it wasn't for this thread I doubt I would be on day 6.

For those thinking of a subscription, there is a very professional Apple app (probably available in other formats too) with extra downloadable content and day 7 is on there too. (I don't know if day 7 is activated as all content is locked, just that it is up).

I was curious when it was first mentioned this am, but doubt I will subscribe as I already pay for Pilates twice a week with a physiotherapist. I would like to continue to drop into Adriene's stuff though, and am grateful that she provides it for free on YT. 😊

museumum · 07/01/2018 17:35

Have any of you joined the fwfg thing? What is it? A website a bit like mn?

museumum · 07/01/2018 17:37

Before I found out about this here I had downloaded the downdog app - any of you used that?
I’m really enjoying daily practise (I know it’s only day 6!) and can only spare time to go to the studio once a week really.

MrsZB · 07/01/2018 18:06

I pay for the FWFG subscription. YWA has been a life changer for me and I want to pay her for it.

IrenetheQuaint · 07/01/2018 18:06

Well, after 8 days of Adriene I've just discovered I can get into lotus position again, which I previously thought I had lost the ability to do thanks to advancing age. I am pleasantly surprised!
